Penny Polendina, my personal character analysis.
Before I start I would like to state, I accept criticisms of her most recent death, and I acknowledge that it is questionably written. However, Penny is a character that I hold incredibly close to my heart so this analysis Is full of my emotion for her.
To begin, Penny is a character that shows we as people matter. Regardless of how long we are a part of a story, regardless of how flawed or complicated we may be. We matter. We influence the people around us in ways we could never imagine. Penny shows us that we are important and that we are loved. Even if we struggle with things that are out of our control.
Penny is also a lesson in humanity. She shows us that regardless of how we are, as long as we have a soul that is fundamentally kind, of as long as we have a soul that cares, we are human. We are worthy and capable of love no matter what.
Penny is fundamentally built to love, I don’t particularly mean love in a romantic way, I mean love in its most basic and true form. The ability and the art of caring for others around us. From the moment we are first introduced to Penny, she cares, she wants to be cared for and she wants to care for others. That is what makes her human. While that might qualify as compassion, I don’t think it is anything short of love.
Finally, she is also a lesson in loss. She shows us it will never be easy. The first time we lose her it is abrupt and it hurts. She’s killed for the sake of cruelty and to show a state of Pyrrhic victory so that our main characters can grow from the loss. She dosent get to chose and it’s clear she is afraid as it happens. The second time we lose her, it’s by choice. She chose to die and give the power to winter. There is closure in the death as it’s not something wanted, but it’s something she knows must happen and she excepts that’s reality. I like to think that this is a way to show the audience that loss will always hurt and grief will never be easy, even when stuff might have worked out had things been different.
All in all, I think penny is a brilliant character, I think her deaths are important and I think we can learn a lot from them. And I think we can all learn a little bit about how to be more loving and kind to one another. Penny is a character who was built to love and to be loved. And for that I will always hold her dear. She has shown that we are important dispite insignificance.
Much like with winter, Penny isn’t gone, she is apart of us. And she will always be a part of me.
