Preserving classic videogames from consoles past.

I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.

Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!

Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.

for the record im not technially 100% anti-AI, in the sense that its a broad category of tech being lumped under one umbrella term so it feels over-zealous to say i hate all of it all the time forever. but i also think trying to discuss what it actually IS good for is difficult right now when i cant take one step without something trying to convince me to use chatgpt to summarize my life and speed up my hobbies and turn my friends into chatbots and optimize my life into oblivion. i am certain there is nuance to the topic but can we stop cramming the square peg into the round hole before you start trying to sell me on the legitimate benefits of the square peg. please.

Neural Nets have existed for decades and are genuinely useful. It's a form of AI that recognizes patterns, and can do stuff like identify cancer cells, tell whether an egg is fertilized or not, detect fraud, and optimize routes.

Those are Expert Systems, tuned to do exactly one thing. If you (say) ask a medical expert system a question about financial law, it's useless. The autopilot that flies a 787 has no idea how to drive a truck on the freeway. A Coulter Counter is excellent at identifying lymphocytes in a blood sample but can't predict the next card in a blackjack game.

And so on.

The problem with so-called generalized AI (AGI) is that we don't have that yet. It doesn't exist. It MIGHT some day, but AGI has been "10 years away" since the 1980s. The goals keep moving as we learn more about how people and machines process data.

But the current crop of AI techbros have been selling generative Large Language Model AI (LLM) as AGI because generative systems do a good job of faking it. There's no actual thought going on, merely the illusion of thought via predicting the next word in a sentence accurately.

If you let a human toddler listen to 800 hours of YouTube car influencer videos, that toddler might end up sounding like a car influencer. They'd parrot horsepower numbers and 0 to 60 times, mention EV range and MSRP numbers.

But they wouldn't understand any of it.

That's ChatGPT.

And yeah, it's worse than useless because it doesn't even know when it's lying or hallucinating. It just babbles convincingly until you stop it.

But for techbros to make money selling that as "AI"? It's the perfect scam, especially if you don't understand how it works.

I fucking hate it.

Thanks to you (positive), I now find myself writing a POTC fic (for our dear Groves, thank you so much for endearing him to me) I was wondering if you had any good resources from your research?

Specifically etiquette, class, and marriage, though also how households are run, Christianity in 1720s Jamaica and how social life differs in the colonies compared to England. Any other resources you have would also be treasured.

The research was actually quite tricky! I mostly did it with guesswork in some cases, and then researching specific things as needed when an issue would crop up in a chapter, rather than doing a whole bunch of research before knowing what I'd need and what I wouldn't. It just seemed like the safer option because I knew otherwise I'd end up infodumping facts that might not be relevant just because I'd read up on it. Most of it was googling etymology of words to find out if they'd even have existed back then!

I did struggle a little because I kept finding that any research I tried to do for the era would give me info for the later 1700s, more around Austen's time, so from there I tried to glean how long these rules or habits had been a thing, because I figured that a lot of these rules would be things they learned from the older generations, who would've been contemporaries of James and his lot. Finding facts specifically for the early 1700s was surprisingly tricky.

A lot came from just years of watching non-stop period movies/shows - Poldark, Outlander and Black Sails especially - and getting a feel for how they would behave in those. Even ones from other periods can still provide inspiration, a lot of the stuff around running a household came from the general vibe of Downton Abbey and Austen adaptations. The great thing about POTC is that it is ultimately historical fantasy, it acts like it's completely fair for Elizabeth to be unfamiliar with the concept of a corset, so when the canon is playing a bit fast and loose with strict historical facts, the fic can do that too, as long as you get the general vibe right. I really think that as long as you get the facts mostly right, most of the time, you can get away with some intentional slips here and there if the plot needs it.

My favourite historian, Lucy Worsley, does have two books that could be helpful, I've read the Austen one and loved it (again, not specifically the right time, but still close enough to get inspiration), I can't vouch for the Courtiers one, haven't gotten round to that one yet, in terms of how useful it is for the early 1700s specifically, but her stuff never fails.

I had the exact same problem, everything was about late 18th Century. Even when I type 1720s they give me 1780s or 1820s. I will just have to keep reminding myself that it's fantasy, and if they can tight lace Elizabeth into a corset, I can play fast and loose with etiquette (and by fast and loose I mean only having a hazy idea where my OC falls in society and just doing what feels right)

I love Lucy Worsley, I've watched all her documentaries (my last completed fic was inspired by her A Merry Tudor Christmas documentary), but I haven't actually read any of her books and I do have a book voucher to use...

Also, do you mind if I am struggling with a certain point, if I drop into your asks to ask you for your thoughts? I really enjoyed the vibes of your settings

you've seen the jokes. india is "dirty", indians are "everywhere", why don't they fix their own country. ok. let me tell you why, and what's happening right now while nobody's watching.

first, the history you skipped: britain ruled india for two centuries and drained it. economist utsa patnaik's research estimates around $45 trillion in today's money was taken. the india that got independence in 1947 was one of the poorest countries on earth. every "why is india like this" question starts there. you don't get to profit off a robbery and then mock the crime scene.

now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:

in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.

and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.

and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.

it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:

• infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.

• youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.

• only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.

• manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.

• journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.

• even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.

and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.

what i'm asking:

if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.

if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.

india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.

we can still save her. but only loudly.
