suddenly got an onslaught of consecutive phm art that really makes me go “oh eva statt, they could never make me hate you” even though its not eva stratt hate art ykwim?
like, yes. ryland being chose to board the hail mary last minute solely because he (aside from being very knowledgable in astrophages) had no family or loved ones is down right depressing and unfair, but you have to realise that it really was the only choice they had.
it would take too long and cause too much controversy with the public and the media if they had chosen to send another scientist who DOES have family or loved ones to bid goodbye too last minute.
with ryland, they cut all of that. they save time, save the effort needed to comfort and reason and apologise to grieving, angry loved ones who would literally have had their dear someone be taken from them in the blink of an eye.
yes, there were other very knowledgable scientists there. just because ryland’s the lead doesn’t necessarily mean that he is the only one they can send. its evidenced by how they DID have someone aside from him to send.
but ryland was likely the only one who fit the boxes of “have no one/no family” and “knows what to do & knows astrophage to the core” on the ship.
yes, he had students who cared for him and who he cared for. yes, he had coworkers who idk mightve cared for him on a work-friend-acquaintance level. but no one who really would require immediate, prior warnings and information about his departure from earth and basically-death-sentence.
he had friends, but those friends were all people on the ship. all people within project hail mary. all people who knew what had to be done- what sacrifices the project required, so basically, with ryland, all of those polite, formal goodbyes were already made from day 1.
so they induced him into a coma, and sent him off.
what happened to ryland was terrible.
what happened to everyone on phm was terrible.
the present, and the very possible-looming-future circumstances of the world were against them; and eva stratt made a choice.
it was either lose a friend, or lose everyone she’d ever known and her entire home, and she chose to lose her friend.
