My family quotes that parable loudly every time another planned housing community on a former floodplain gets inundated with water.

I feel sorry for the old man, but it was stealing. There is no apparently about it. Water is not free, it’s not a right to have it, and people pay must pay for it. If a government gives a thing to you like utilities, its still not free because they take it from somewhere else, like in taxes.

If I buy a loaf of bread, and then decide to make a sandwich for my friend from some of it, is this STEALING? Is my friend STEALING the bread I already PAID for in full? Is the bread seller entitled to receive compensation because I, the person who PAID ALREADY the full value of the bread they sell, decided to give away a portion of it (a portion from an already PAID FOR product).
When people say that capitalism rots your brain they aren’t kidding - this is literally a disease, one of the mind and soul, and it’s contagious, and it’s deadly… Luckily there is a cure:
to add wood to the fire, it should also be pointed out - her mother wasn’t stealing that water - she was paying for it. Because there’s a meter that reads how much water your household uses and the water company then charges you accordingly. She was -paying- for the water she was giving to the neighbor. And still got shut down. Because this wasn’t about what was right and it wasn’t even about what was fair or fair trade - it was about punishment.
Not sure how to justify this take because I will essentially be arguing for a 3 hour movie to be longer. But I would have liked a scene with Rotblat leaving. I mean we had Teller let’s have his polar opposite. Just a scene of him leaving and Oppenheimer shouting “where are you going?” “The war in Europe is over. I miss my wife. I’m going home.” And Oppenheimer staring after him.
the more i think about Oppenheimer the more disappointed i get because at its core it’s such an interesting story to tell. like the whole manhattan project catapulted the entire world into a new atomic era that we could never go back from whether we were ready for it or not. and the fallout from the project not only changed and devastated the lives of hundreds of thousands of people (including of course the victims in hiroshima and nagasaki + the people living in new mexico where they tested the bomb) and the continued generational trauma of the bombs. also just the general mass panic and fear that the Cold War instilled into every citizen in the states who were literally waiting to one day be just annihilated by a nuclear attack. the whole creation of the atomic bomb had so much impact on the world. so doing a deep character study of both oppenheimer and his colleagues on the moral ambiguity of their work in the project and the outcome of it is such a great movie concept. but the film didn’t feel like that at all. instead Nolan gave us the watered down story that he’s best at and spent almost three hours forcing us to watch whether oppenheimer had to lose his disneyland government fast-pass due to his communist ties or not (spoiler: he does) and how strauss doesn’t like him because he got his feewlings hurt once. all the other scientists and physicists were given one or two minutes of screen time and were really just names to a face. the actual bombs creation was given a sidelong glance and trivial explanation at best. and of course to tie it all off the main female side characters were either naked/having sex for 80% of their screen time or was given the character depth of a piece of tissue paper
My reading was that it was a cautionary tale about the dangers of neutrality. Oppenheimer never fully committed himself to anything with catastrophic results. He never committed himself to either Kitty or Jean and left him in a fundamentally broken marriage. He never committed himself to either his political beliefs or the government and ended up a pariah with both. He never committed himself to accepting or rejecting the bomb (Nolan spoke about how he never apologized for Hiroshima or Nagasaki). He felt he was never entirely to blame because he was never entirely committed to the things he was to blame for. It’s an insidious type of cowardice that ripped his and everyone else’s lives apart and still made him feel like he was the victim in the whole thing.
see what people are failing to realize for some reason that i think is wild is that no it’s not “you don’t care about oppenheimer because it’s funnier to care about barbie more” it’s not “you don’t care about oppenheimer because it’s dark and gritty” No i don’t care about oppenheimer because it’s a fucking AMERICAN IMPERIALISM WAR CRIME MOVIE!!!!!!
like call me insane but i think a toy line consumerism grab is much less of a crime than glorifying dropping the atomic bomb and killing hundreds of thousands of people no matter how “complex” the narrative surrounding it is
Having seen the film I don’t think it glorified the bombing at all. At worst there are characters who tried to justify it ,merely as an attempt to dodge moral culpability, and as for Oppenheimer himself. My main takeaway from the film was he was a coward who talked a lot about helping people and reducing harm but when actually confronted with the task of speaking up stayed quiet. There’s a scene near the end where one character basically screams at him “YOU DO NOT GET TO FEEL GUILTY ABOUT THIS. YOU DID THIS KNOWING FULL WELL WHAT IT WOULD DO. AND EVEN THEN STAYED INVOLVED WITH NUKES. STOP TRYING TO GET SYMPATHY. YOU DON’T DESERVE IT.”
