I actually don't think calling Christians 'farm cultists' is very belonging to the "love and respect people and how they live" political affiliation that is American leftism, AS a leftist (+atheist). but sure man you can disrespect religions when it's one you don't like that's cool apparently
I said the ai couple looked like "mormon cultists," a phrase that technically only implies a radical cult *within* mormonism, rather than grammatically accusing all mormonism of being a cult, so I'm just pointing out that your reading comprehension needs work. But that said yes all mormonism is a cult and they abuse women and kids. Fuck how they live, I never said religions were owed respect, that's stupid.
We spoke to a law professor who conducted in-depth interviews with FLDS survivors about the abuses women face in the church. These include t
Would you say Catholicism is a cult? Because (as someone who was raised neither Mormon nor Catholic, to preempt any accusations of bias) I think they're about equally bad, and Mormonism just gets singled out on Tumblr because relative to this site's primarily white American cultural Protestant userbase, Catholicism is exotic and foreign, wheras Mormonism is a home-grown American religion complicit in particular American atrocities like Jim Crow and Manifest Destiny. Mormonism is a lot better at getting lay people to actually follow all their bad doctrines about gender roles and sexual morality and whatnot, but Catholicism has a much worse clerical CSA problem.
1) every ex-catholic i know openly says catholicism is a cult; 2) this is a strange and unnecessary whatabout when the topic of conversation is literally mormonism. what did you hope to accomplish by saying this?
I am an ex-Catholic. I took it very seriously and then stopped taking it very seriously and was coerced into getting confirmed by the Catholic church. It sucked. Catholicism sucks. Catholicism is not a cult.
It is unclear to me what you are saying here. You are obviously not unaware that the majority of ex-Catholics worldwide don't consider Catholicism a cult. The native cultures of many Catholics don't have a concept analogous to "cult" in the Anglosphere.
Maybe what you are saying is:
that if you ask ex-Catholics if they have negative feelings toward Catholicism or regret its impact on their life, most will say yes
that your friend group uniformly interprets this as meaning Catholicism is a cult
that your friend group is just way ahead of the curve on these issues
That's about the most charitable thing I can come up with. A cult is not just any religion that has a negative impact on people's lives. Whether you are a descriptivist or a prescriptivist, "cult" actually means a small, isolated, or schismatic faith.
