sixteen years ago, riaās father took catalonia by storm and declared himself the new prince
since then, ria has lost both him and her brother, henry, and she is determined that nothing will happen to her last living family: DAVID
whatever happens, she will always have his backā¦which usually means that she has no one elseās
w a cattish temper and a strange mixture of entitlement and certainty of loss, ria is a piece of work, but sheās a loyal one for all that
ria is essentially the princess until her brother marries and she certainly acts the part, ordering ppl about
doesnāt have feelings for EDWARD, so much as the hearty desire to be pleasantly distracted
bc she does in fact have feelings for ALEXANDER which isā¦about the worst person she could possibly fall for, all things considered
principled, diverting, tempestuous
can come off way worse than she actually is tbh
but can also come off way better, at times, too
has a lot of demons sheās constantly running away from
not the least of which is the fear that her brother, HENRY, is dead and not simply run away
while she doubts her fatherās suspicions that the godolphins kidnapped and murdered himā¦
heās been gone long enough w not a single report of his whereabouts, that she doubts he is alive
and ria is haunted by the fact that they can be so easily lost wo a trace or any goodbyes whatsoever

most ppl donāt like ria and sheās careful to keep it that way
while she might be happier if she were more open, the truth is that sheās not as unfeeling as she may seem
rather than being motivated by malice or total egotism (tho she is a selfish person in many respects), the fact is that sheās afraid
over the course of her life, ria has lost a great deal and she doesnāt believe she could survive another loss
she doesnāt ever wish to feel that way again
so she behaves caustically towards others to push them away
by keeping distance between herself and others, she hopes that when tragedy inevitably strikes, it wonāt effect her so deeply
the truth is that ria is actually much more generous than she seems
she does, in fact, wish to uphold the law and see the good prosper and she genuinely believes that david is the best course for catalonia
this is not to suggest that she doesnāt enjoy her position bc she does
ria ~is materialistic and she does revel in the finer things in life and she does like power and the free exercise of it she enjoys as princess
but ria also regards herself as a fair leader
for one thing, the waynflete government has done little in regards to the traditional aristocracy:
casting them off or raising peasants as the need arises
that being said, she doesnāt do this heedlessly - she is careful to know whose threats to respect and who to disregard
ria is a loyal friend!!!!!!!!!
after all, she canāt always keep ppl at armās length (despite her best efforts)
she knows what hardship is, after all the waynfletes rose out of that, and sheād plunge back into it for a friend
even if that past does represent one of her great fears
ria is driven to cover up the past from which they came and maintain their greatness in the eyes of the ppl
she does see this as a political necessity, for who would follow those who appear common?
but also bc she is frankly humiliated by that past
all her life, she wanted nothing more than to put that past behind her and be something more
stubborn af!!!!! itās her way or the highway, folks! and believe me as princess she makes this felt
melancholy af!!!!!!!!!!!!!
petty and spiteful!!!!!!!!!!!!!! which comes both out of her insecurities and her conceit
also wrong her once and she WILL. DESTROY. YOU. no take backs
never forgive, never forget
tho she doesnāt usually do this entirely unprovoked, if sheās feeling the least bit insecure she wiLL go on the defensive
that means pointing out your unfashionable clothes to a crowded room or making a snide comment about your character
usually does this either in āconfidenceā to someone who will spread it around to you and your friends or directly under the guise ofĀ ākindness:ā
āoh my dear, as i donāt wish you to be exposed to unfavorable whispers, i wished to touch on your complexion - itās looking sadly sallow' etc
and unfortunately for everyone, ria feels insecure a loT
and even if that werenāt the case, sheās super judgmental anyway!!!!!

ria isnāt all bad traits, however
sheās exceedingly clever and principled and wiLL surprise you, if the above is all you know of her, by sticking to her guns and conscience!!!!
wants to do whatās right and whatās best for catalonia!!!!!!!!!!
direct and honest, doesnāt see the point much in beating around the bush
this doesnāt stop her from a good collusion when the need arises - in fact, she quite enjoys scheming - but it does mean she tries to be ethical
and she (tries) never to let her feelings get in the way
this isnāt suPER successful always but props for effort i guess?????
patient and reliable!!!!!!
wiLL surprise you by protecting and caring for you if youāre in need and she appreciates your situation!!!!!!
sheās actually extremely caring and, while she tries to ignore it a lot, her heart goes out to ppl
if thereās no one else to aid them, she will take that upon herself!!!!!

unfortunately this is another way in which she terrorizes her servants, but itās one occasion on which it isnāt usually meant to be
if her dinner isnāt served at 7 oāclock ON THE DOT there will be hell to pay
but as a result, her household is extremely efficient and thereās v little waste which means thereās more to give in good charity!!!!!!

has a lil more chill than your average quasar or arrington...but we all know thatās not saying a lot
a lot of this comes from her inability to express emotion, something w which sheās struggled her whole life!!!!!
which is a huuuuuuuuge part of the reason she is the way that she is tbh
bold af!!!!!!!!!! not afraid to show up and show you up
or yknoW support the inciting of a mob and the resulting revolution and hostile takeover of a government by her father ;D
granted, she was a child at the time...and his methods absolutely turn her stomach
but she does ultimately think that david is right for catalonia - it was in desperate need of some new blood!!!!!
old prince felix certainly wasnāt cutting it as leader (tho she was horrified by his murder)
despite her feelings for alexander who she (secretly) does noT believe deserves what he got!!!!!!!
something she tries to cover up by being aggressively mean!!!!!
rational and practical af!!!!!!!!!!
loves originality and progress and innovation!!!!!!!!!!!! send her all your brilliant new ideas!!!!! she will absolutely champion them to david!!!!!!
super perceptive actually ~gets ppl quite a lot but you didnāt hear that from me
besides, for all that, sheās often v insensitive!!!! itās a mess!!!!

for all this, however, ria is secretly striving to be the best person she can be...
she simply misses the mark
ria might be considered a princess now, but she certainly wasnāt always
riaās father, robert, was, in fact, that younger brother of a minor noble
the name of waynflete had long since lost its glamor, even in ablemarle, its seat, living in ever-decaying grandeur
robertās family began in a practically penniless state
ria felt constantly shown up by everyone around them as they pathetically tried to hold on to what little they had
before ria was even born, her father had had enough and set in motion a plot that would ravage all of catalonia
when ria was ten, it finally took effect
a savage revolution racked catalonia, tearing it apart
it began seizing nobles and decapitating them publicly as traitors to the state
her own uncle - robertās brother - was seized and beheaded and his children went missing, presumed dead
ria lived in fear for her life - the one thing sheād always wanted but had never had a hold on was now enough to sentence her to death
but, fortunately, her small grasp on it was enough, at least, to keep her away from the public eye at least until the others were dead
the fear lasted and lasted, however, until her father wrested control of the revolutionary government for himself
and convinced its other leaders of its barbaric nature
w both his brother and nephew gone, robert took control both of the nation - and of the house of waynflete
what ria doesnāt know is that her father, in fact, conspired to incite the rebellion and the murders of the nobility
he even outed his own brotherās hiding place so that he would be killed
and then he seized control back, using it to climb to the throne, himself
around this same time, her brother, henry, disappeared and is now presumed dead
since that time, ria has lived her life as a princess of catalonia, surrounding herself w beautiful things and trying to forget
but mostly doing her utmost to help rebuild catalonia
tho she loved her father, she never liked him and she lived in terror of his moods his whole life long
however, his memory is dear to her
she never felt loved and accepted and, even to this day, she craves that more than anything in this world
unlike david, her desire for this makes her willfully blind to many of robertās faults
now, riaās life is dedicated to helping her remaining brother and the country they now rule...
