Since I started the whole "Elwin adopts Keefe" thing, I'm gonna share my headcanons about it (but where Elwin and Mr. Forkle get joint custody):
It was Mr. Forkle's idea to take him away from Cassius
He brought it up to the council after Cassius refused to change how he was parenting Keefe
Bronte was the first person on board with the plan. All it took was Mr. Forkle claiming that Cassius and Gisela were verbally abusive
He had to show the other councillors evidence first though (thank goodness he's a telepath), but enen then, some of them still didn't know what to think
It took Bronte threatening to leave the council and raise Keefe himself for them to agree
They've been working on it on and off since Lodestar and nobody knows about it
Well, Grady and Edaline have their suspicions, but they don't say anything
The council works with Mr. Forkle trying to find people that Keefe knew that would take care of him
They even go around asking some people
They let Team Valiant know while Keefe is in his coma and Sophie is on board before Emery finishes his sentence
The others quickly agree, and they all start working together to get a tribunal set up for when Keefe is awake and ready
Most of the volunteers are the parents, but pretty much all of them are ruled out
Eventually (around the time Keefe wakes up from the coma), they narrow it down to Alden and Della, Mr. Forkle, and Elwin
Team Valiant isn't allowed to tell anyone what's going on, and no one else knows that there is going to be a tribunal until the day of
Oh and they TOTALLY had to wear their fancy outfits
It isn't a public tribunal and it's on limited to family and friends
Keefe goes on the elevated stage thing looking super confused and the only people allowed up there with him is Sophie
When they tell him what's happening, his face goes through so many emotions, but eventually (while in shock) he asks who is adopting him
And they tell him he gets to choose
And when Alden and Della, Mr. Forkle, and Elwin stand up, he busts into tears. Tears of relief, shock, and pure joy
However, he gets really nervous when they ask him to choose.
He knows he doesn't want to live with Alden and Della (which he says out loud and they aren't mad about)
He just doesn't want to choose between Mr. Forkle and Elwin because bith of them had always been there for him
Sophie's been holding a telepathic connection the whole time and she stands up and adresses everybody the formal way that Bronte and Oralie taught her
She explains what joint custody is and how the humans did it
Keefe looks so happy finding out that he had that option, which pretty much immediately showed what he wanted to do
And Elwin and Mr. Forkle (who reveled one of his identities here btw) were totally on board with the idea
So he swaps houses every weekend or something like that (forgive me, I don't know exactly what I'm talking about here) and eventually he just goes to whichever place he feels like whenever he wants
Ro definitely favored going to Elwin's place, but she wouldn't tell Keefe that
After a little while, they get more comfortable with the routine and Keefe feels so at home with them
They don't push him to do things or be a certain way, they make sure he knows that they're proud of him and care about him, and act like actual positive father figures to him
It's really good for all three of them and they are all so much happier together
