He had been walking the shadowed streets of Edinburgh for hours, and the problem remained unsolved:

He was a coward.

It had been the perfect accidental setup. Their train had been severely delayed, and they’d arrived at the hotel far past their guaranteed reservation time. The only room left contained one queen bed. They’d taken it, of course; what choice did they have? It’s not as if they hadn’t done it before. Well, Before. Which was the problem. Everything had been Before, and now it was After, and there had never been a During.

Sherlock desperately wanted a During with John, and sometimes he thought maybe John wanted it too. There had been several moments over the last few months where he thought John was about to say Something, but there was always an interruption in the form of Rosie or Mrs. Hudson or a text from Lestrade, and the moments had all passed. But there was no couch or chair in their tiny hotel room, and barely any floor space, so they’d have no choice but to share the bed and maybe this thing that Sherlock so desperately wanted might…happen.

So naturally when John had gone into the shower, Sherlock had thrown on the Belstaff and fled.

Where’d you go?

Needed a walk. Don’t wait up. –SH

Then Sherlock had walked, and walked, and walked. He’d stopped at one point and had two fingers of Scotch in a pub, and then he’d walked some more. He was cold and he was tired and he was lonely and he was so, so afraid. He was afraid of going back to the room and he was afraid of staying away; he was afraid of John finding out and afraid of holding this secret close to his chest forever.

He was afraid that John would decide Rosie needed a mother, or that Sherlock was unfit to be in Rosie’s life. He was afraid that now that he’d realized how lonely he was, he would never be anything else.

He wasn’t used to being afraid, but everything having to do with John Watson was a rare exception to the way he lived the rest of his life.

He took a deep breath, turned the key in the lock, and pushed open the hotel room door. He would use the bathroom, put on his pajamas, and just…get into the bed.

The room was dimly lit by both the bedside lamp John had obviously left on for him and the television that was quietly displaying the end of Rear Window, and John was asleep. His head was at the foot of the bed–wanted to be closer to the screen without having to sit in the desk chair–and he was sprawled out on his back–fell asleep watching the movie on his stomach; flipped over to his customary sleeping position sometime after. Sherlock found himself crossing not to the bathroom as he’d intended, but directly to the bed, where he stared down at the wonder that was John Watson.

Sherlock relished the rare chance to look his fill unnoticed. John was always beautiful to him, but in sleep, with his edges softened and his cares laid aside, he was at once the entire world and the only thing Sherlock had ever truly wanted. It was so easy to imagine crawling in beside him and curling up with his head on John’s good shoulder, letting their breathing patterns syncopate as they slept. It was equally easy to imagine waking John with his mouth, either with a gentle kiss on the lips or by tugging down his pants and–

John stretched in his sleep, one hand coming up behind his head, and as the muscles in his bicep shifted, Sherlock swallowed hard. He’d spent hours, days, years cataloging everything those hands could do, and twice that time fantasizing about the things he wanted them to do. He let out a quiet sigh, briefly letting his eyes fall shut as he thought about the way John’s hands might feel on his skin.

When he opened them again, John was gazing up at him.

It was too late to school the emotions away from his face, and he knew that everything he felt was plainly visible for John to see. He was so tired of hiding, so tired of running. John would see, and John would react, and at least then Sherlock would finally know. He was so wrapped up in this revelation that it took him a long moment to see that John, too, was done hiding.

And the world, at last, fell away.

Are You Real?

His mother told him the mirror in his room was magical and that its twin was out there somewhere. John didn’t quite believe that. 

At first glance, the mirror looked ordinary. It was oval with a thin black frame, and when he stood in front of it, he only saw himself and parts of the room behind him. But sometimes, when he looked at it from another angle, strange things could happen. Such as a vibrating surface, a change of colour, and the mirage of several worlds beyond it. 

It happened so rarely though; therefore, John determined that the thing was just a mirror; that his imagination had got the better of him.

When he reached puberty, the incidents stopped completely. He was both relieved and devastated once he realised that. After all, he used a serious amount of time in front of the item to style his hair and to despair about new pimples.

The mirror in Marguerite Vernet’s boudoir was the most ordinary, yet fascinating object Sherlock knew.

“It is just a mirror, brother mine,” Mycroft sighed when he found his little brother in front of it for the umpteenth time that week.

“It’s not! Sometimes the surface flutter. And it can change colour. If you look at it from an oblique angle.”

“Nonsense!”

But his brother disapproval didn’t stop Sherlock from seeking out the mirror when he visited his grand mère.

“Somewhere out there, its jumeau exists, mon trésor,” Marguerite whispered.

“A twin? Mycroft says it’s never twins,” Sherlock protested.

“Oh, but Mycroft does not know everything.”

This wasn’t exactly news to him, but it was rather jarring to hear it said out loud so matter-of-factly.

The week before John was shipped out to Afghanistan, something strange happened. He was visiting his parents for the last time in God knew how long. The mirror was still in place in his old room, looking harmless as it had done for years and years. But when he was about to climb into bed, something happened. A dark and unfamiliar voice reverberated through the room.

“Grand mère promised me that I should have it, and I intend to bring it back to London, Mycroft!”

“What the hell,” John muttered.

He placed himself in front of the mirror, but he could only see himself. The voice didn’t speak again either. To John’s incredulity the baritone stirred something in him. A yearning, leaving his chest empty and aching.

“You should’ve gone easier on the whisky, Watson,” he berated himself.

“It’s the twin mirror and most likely it’s owner you heard,” his brain unhelpfully informed him.

The following days, nothing happened, which left John slightly nauseous and definitely disappointed.

It was strange to look at himself in the mirror wearing his uniform. His posture straightened on its own accord the second the last button was in place, and it felt almost solemn to put the beret on his head.

“Are you real?” 

John physically recoiled from the mirror when he heard the deep voice from days prior. He couldn’t see anyone but himself, though.

Nonetheless, he asked, oh so tentatively: “Who’s this?” 

He got no answer, and hours later John found himself under the Afghan sun.

“Be careful, soldier,” Sherlock mumbled when he realised that the man in the mirror couldn’t see him.

It was clear that he was the owner of the twin mirror, but Sherlock had no idea where it was situated. The man was British, at least, but that didn’t say much. Unfortunately, the background behind the soldier was rather blurry, so there was nothing for Sherlock to deduce. The only thing he knew for certain was the magnetic pull he felt. It all but radiated from the other man.

“Who are you, and what are you doing to me?” he whispered with an unfamiliar ache where his heart was.

No one had ever had that effect on him. It was terrifying and exhilarating in equal measure.

Sadly, the soldier never asked Sherlock to be careful, and when the cocaine called, he forgot all about the mirror and its twin. Curiously enough, it was the thought of the other man that helped him through rehab three years later.

“Surely, I would have felt something if he – “

His mutterings were interrupted by a burning pain in his left shoulder, and Sherlock passed out.

“A bit different from my day,” John remarked to Mike as he surveyed the lab at Barts.

“Tell me about it,” Mike sniggered.

“Ah, Mike. Can I borrow your – “

John’s knees almost buckled, and his ears started to ring loudly when he heard that voice. The one from the mirror. How was that even possible?

“You made it,” the man the voice belonged to murmured almost reverently.

John’s vision was not as affected as the rest of his body, and he gazed at the approaching man, who looked impossibly young. He was also devastatingly gorgeous; the voice fit him perfectly.

“I did. Barely.”

“Your shoulder?” deep baritone asked.

“What? How do you – “

“I felt it. Six weeks ago, yes?”

“Yes,” John whispered.

Surely, he was dreaming. But then the warmth of the man’s presence engulfed him like the softest shock blanket.

“Are you real?” John asked him the next day when they met at Baker Street.

Sherlock took his hands in his and let his thumbs stroke John’s knuckles.

“Does this feel real to you?” he asked softly.

“It does, and still - “

John never got to finish that sentence, because Lestrade texted, and then they were running after a serial killer, over rooftops and down dark alleyways.

“Now, that felt real,” John panted when the black door to 221 closed behind them.

“How about this?” Sherlock whispered and leaned in to cover John’s lips with his own.

“I think I need more data,” John grinned when Sherlock drew back, and pulled him back in to snog him properly.

I literally just finished my last drawing while I’m still 31. This has been one heck of a year…and drawing Ben was the very last cherry on top. Roll on 32… :)

 It’s safe to say that the Belstaff and I have an intense love/hate relationship.

This is one of the scariest things I’ve ever done! Putting myself out there and asking for things is HARD, and I genuinely don’t know if there’s enough interest in this for it to be viable.

BUT shy bairns get nowt and all that, and if there is enough support and this does work out, then it’s a chance to do something really exciting. Very few people have had a properly fitted suit of historical plate to test with, and even fewer of them have an audience of this size to share their findings with. And while I may not be the best person for the job, I’m the only person that I am.

SO, if you want to see how far I can push movement in plate armour, or how many fantasy tropes I can recreate; if you want to see the process of making and fitting a full suit, and learn more about historical craftsmanship; OR if you want to watch a goofy goober pole dancing and attempting gymnastics in a clanky tin suit, with lots of failure along the way, please support this project.

There’s no way I can do it on my own, but if enough people chip in, there’s a chance!

And if you can’t or don’t want to contribute, don’t worry about it! I’ll still be here making my usual content either way!

OOO this is a good one, I've never actually done this kind of list before!
