So I watched a documentary about Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle and, among other things, they talked about fan culture back then (1890s - 1910s, if I remember correctly). And because Conan Doyle had stopped writing Sherlock Holmes stories for a time, people wrote their own stories to keep them going until the new publication.

They Wrote Fanfiction.

They even sometimes sent them to the publisher's or to Conan Doyle himself. They gave him a girlfriend in a lot of them, all the usual stuff. It didn't really go into the whole shipping Sherlock and John, but I feel like, in private, some fans definitely did that, too. People discussed their thoughts and argued about them.

I just think it's so neat how fandoms haven't really changed much, when you think about it.
