I know most my followers live in the US, Canada or Europe, but hopefully you'll read this and get an idea of what I'm living right now (and the rest of the country too).
(English isn't my first language so excuse me for any mistakes)
Santiago (capital of Chile) is in State of Emergency, that means some of our rights and freedoms guaranteed by our constitution are suspended. The military forces are in charge for 15 days or until the order is restored. They just set a curfew from 10 pm until 7am. Last time this happened was in 1987, during the military dictatorship (where 40,000 people died or disappeared). Everything because of the unfair rise of the public transportation fare. The minimum wage here is around 430 USD, people spend 21% of it only in transportation, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. People are fed up with the health care system, elderly people don't have enough money to live, politicians (including the president), the police and military have robbed millions and millions of dollars, and so much more. We can't stand living in this abusive system anymore and we're fighting for a change but the police and military are repressing people, throwing teargas bombs, shooting everywhere and everyone (including students), all metro (subway, tube) stations are closed (some were burned down) and we've been left without any kind of public transportation in a desperate attempt to make the people go against the people, but we won't stop. I'm so proud of my generation and specially of younger generations because they started this riot, teenagers are being so brave and helped waking this country up. I'm extremely scared but also so happy and hopeful this will have an effect and will change things.
so glad thereâs a game out there that allows me to be goose, do crimes!
when my brother was in kindergarten my mom HATED him shortening his name to Chris instead of Christopher and told him he wasnât allowed to do it. but âChristopherâ is a really hard name for a kindergartner to spell.
so when parent-teacher conferences rolled around the teacher was like âYeah, heâs doing alright but you might want to talk to him about practicing spelling his name. Maybe shorten it to âChrisââ
And then she pulled out a pile of his work and my dad started laughing so hard that he had to leave the room because my brother had signed his name as CHRIST on every single one in giant kindergartner handwriting
Can we normalize doing nothing, please?
I work with kids. These kids are at my program before and after school, and then some of them have sports/dance/music sometimes all of the above before they finally go home, eat dinner, and go to sleep. Then rinse and repeat everyday, and games and more classes on the weekend, etc.
Iâm all for extracurriculars, but this turns into the teen who is not only in the school play, but theyâre on the newspaper, the football team, and seven different clubs. In college they take double the courseloads, and then once they graduateâŠwhat?
They work themselves raw because they arent used to downtime. Theyâve been told they can always be doing something, and they donât know how to relax. This turns into the adult that has anxiety because thereâs nothing left to clean, the adult that desperately wants to watch that TV show but canât force themselves to sit long enough for it.
Then they turn into the moms and dads who spend all their free time ferrying their kids to extracurriculars.
Like, these kids donât know what downtime is? I told a kid I did nothing last weekend, and he looked at me like I was crazy. He asked what I was doing this weekend and I said âProbably sleeping, mostly,â and he actually gasped. Then he rattled off a bunch of things I could do, to which I had to stop him.
âNo, you donât understand. I plan on sleeping. Iâm booked.â
âBut you couldââ
âNah. Iâm just gonna rest.â
It was as if I had said a bad word or something. I asked what he does when he gets sick, and he says he goes to practice anyway. I asked him what he does if he doesnât feel like going, and he said he goes anyway. I asked when he takes time to rest, and he said when he sleeps at night.
Bring back lazy Sundays. Bring back Saturday morning cartoons. Bring back the idea of relaxing and soaking in your day before moving into the next thing. Bring back the right to breathe, the right to rest.
Bring back mental health days, and taking a break. Bring back taking a walk or watching a show or setting a timer to remind yourself to stop cleaning and relax.
If youâre running at 100% all the time with no time to recharge, then your battery is going to die spectacularly, and probably at the worst possible time.
