KARA’S KORNER!!! <3
WELCOME BACK TO KARA’S KORNER! Okay, today’s topic: true love. Soulmates. Real, or not? Mama and Beth always say, “Ah, Kara, there’s no such thing!”, but I think that’s just because they’re old, and Beth just broke up :(. I made a promise with my best friend yesterday: never to be in a relationship unless it’s with your soulmate! Josephine, my best friend, asked me what my favourite boy was! I’ll write it here so I don’t forget:
Patient: I take a long time on things sometimes, and if he gets mad that is NOT OKAY!
Tall: I am medium height, I want him to be able to see the top of my head LOL
Cute: Obviously.
Nice: And not just in a normal way, but just to me. Like I don’t want him being nice to other girls. Just to me. But he would help people if they needed help.
Rich: This one is not needed, but it would help! I’m only being honest here!
Anyway, that’s all the traits that I want my future boyfriend to have for now. If I think of more, I’ll definitely post it.
In other news, since today was the first day of school, Josephine and I got to scout out all the cute guys! Sadly, there were only 6 new students, and 4 of them were GIRLS! 🤢 Of the last two, George and Douglas, Josephine and I each chose one! That’s why Josephine and I are best friends btw, it’s because our tastes in men are SOOOO different! Like last year, when there were more boys, we managed to separate it between the both of us evenly. It didn’t matter at the end anyways, it turns out that neither Josephine or I really LOVED any of the boys.
THIS YEAR, however, MAY BE DIFFERENT! So essentially, we each chose one of the two new kids. Mine was… DOUGLAS! He’s my new crush! His freckles and curly brown hair are SOOO my type! I guess that’s something else I need to add to the list of things I like… When he walks past, he smells so good, and his brown eyes are so big and cute like a rabbit!
Josephine’s crush, George, is almost as tall as me! But Josephine says that she likes the way he runs. George is the 2nd fastest runner in our grade, behind Hunter, but Josephine says that if George trains just a little more, he’ll beat Hunter. I think she’s just saying that because she likes George HAHAHA
Also, side note, I think my dad’s coming home next week! I miss him so much! And I think I hear Beth crying in the next room... Maybe I’ll go talk to her later and educate her in the ways of love~
But anyway, my computer time is almost done and Josephine keeps pushing my shoulders, so I have to leave the updates until next time! AHHH, YOUNG LOVE! I can’t wait to see Douglas at school tomorrow! <3
This will be me and Douglas, I CAN JUST TELL!

This morning
I wake up to a burning sensation in my head. How late did I sleep last night? My eyes feel like they’ve swollen to three times the size, and every time I blink I feel cotton between my lids. For a second, disorientated, I forget why I have awoken like this.
The purple curtains leak the faintest amount of light. My desk on the right looks as if a storm has passed through, pages ripped up, pictures taken down… Pictures.
Then it hits me.
The pictures of John and I are laying on the floor, the trash, some ripped in half and on the desk. I remember what happened yesterday.
John and I have been together for as long as I can remember. First, our “together” meant that we were neighbours. We would spend hours in the backyard making mud pies, catching worms, or chasing each other with the tiniest water gun.
Then, our “together” meant we were best friends. When we first started going to school, we spent every moment with each other. It just felt right. We refused to let anyone in our circle, to the point where our parents got worried we weren’t socializing enough.
Finally, up until yesterday night, our “together” meant, well, together. We were dating. In love. Soulmates.
But then fights started happening. We went to different universities. Different experiences, different people, different growth. And I guess we grew apart.
The tears threaten to spill out once again, so I stare up at the ceiling and furrow my brows.
When the feeling passes, I slide off the bed and lay on the ground, the scattered pieces of pictures around me. Behind the paper thin walls, I can hear my sister, Kara, laughing with her friend. They’re having a playdate. She briefly filled me in on her school gossip the day before. A new boy named Doug or whoever. Her “soulmate”. And where was mine?
On impulse, I grab a picture off of the ground and stare at it. The picture of John and I smiling behind a sandcastle at the beach showed my soulmate. The one torn in half with us laying in bed showed my soulmate. My phone screen, decorated with doodles and stickers, showed my soulmate. But what happens when your soulmate leaves?
The picture I’ve been holding begins to swim as tears fill my vision again, and I can’t seem to hold them back any more. I feel like a part of me has been lost, and will be lost forever. Without warning, I begin to sob, gasping for air, my chest heaving and my eyes swelling shut.
There’s knocking at the door, a thousand miles away. I scream at the air to leave me alone, to let me grieve, and I curl up into a ball. How can Kara be so naive? I don’t believe in soulmates anymore.
I can’t afford to believe because, if it’s real, I would have just lost mine.

A Love Letter
Dear Simon,
How are you doing? Is the trip going well? I can’t wait for you to come home from overseas. I’m writing this letter to you to update you on home life. I cooked the most wonderful pot roast yesterday! The girls loved it.
Kara currently has a friend over! I think they’re starting to get to the age where they talk about love and all that stuff. They’re picking the cutest boys in school! I remember when I used to do that with Agatha.
More importantly, I just heard Elizabeth crying this morning, and when I knocked on her door, she yelled at me to go away! I think she and that boy John have broken up. Oh Simon, do you remember when they would walk to school together and refused to talk to anybody but themselves? I wonder why they’ve called it quits! I want to help her, but I think heartbreak is healed only with time.
Seeing Elizabeth like this reminds me of my first love. The one before you. It’s been so long, I don’t even remember his name. Could you imagine that? When we broke up, it felt like the end of the world. It felt like a piece of my soul was torn from my body! I hope you don’t mind me telling you this by the way dear, you know I love you the most.
The point is, though, that I really loved that boy. And when we broke up, I thought I had lost my soulmate. But then I met you. And you were nothing like him. You were calm and introverted and didn’t know how to take the lead, and that was the furthest from what I wanted from a boy. But somehow, I still loved you.
And we fought too, Simon, remember when we fought almost every day? We had every reason to break up during that time! But we didn’t, and we stayed. We made the decision to love each other. We didn’t find our soulmates, we created it within each other.
That’s what I want to tell Elizabeth. I want to tell her that it’s hard work and patience that makes true love, not just the feeling of butterflies or the fact that you have the same interests. Sure, those do help, but it’s not all rainbows and butterflies like Kara imagines, or all doom and sadness like Elizabeth thinks.
Now that I think of it, though, perhaps if I travelled back in time and told my younger self that it would all be okay, I wouldn’t believe it. They have to find it out on their own.
Anyway sorry Simon, I don’t mean to go off on such a tangent. I suppose you not being home recently and Elizabeth’s heartbreak along with Kara’s exploration in “true love” has made me quite sappy too. It just got me thinking about when I was younger.
Me and the children I miss you and love you always!
Love, Mary
Dear Simon
