Carl, a 27-year-old Coast Guard vet, still finds himself facing a World Dungeon full of goblins, shapeshifting tutorial guides, and a deranged AI with a foot fetish, all with his ex-girlfriend’s prize show cat and her pet dinosaur in tow - but this time, he’s not alone. This time, his neighbor/tentative friend, a paramedic named Mel, happens to get back to their apartment building just as Carl is trying to get Donut out of a tree, and they watch the world collapse together. Surely this won’t cause them to form a shaky bond that grows over time as they face more and more harrowing challenges that only bring them closer together…

AKA What it would be like if Carl was thrown into the dungeon with a competent, supportive human woman instead of just a loveable but easily distractible cat and a gang of people who insist on calling him crazy at every turn.

AKA Carl x OC slowburn that starts out as a straight-up rewrite of canon then branches off as the plot develops. The slowburn is very slow, but will also continue to develop, so be patient, young grasshopper.

Minor Parade of Horribles spoilers

Sometimes feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t really give a shit about the AI’s background.

And before anyone starts with the “you don’t understand” nonsense, I do, and that’s why I don’t care.

I have listened to every books multiple times. I know the characters inside and out, and I will always dislike the AI.

Whether it’s the constant sexual harassment of Carl that half of this fandom seems to write off

Or the way it acts with crawlers in general

I don’t really feel sympathy for it.

Even though I think the story of the primals and the AIs is actually super tragic but also so interesting and I want to know more, it doesn’t excuse past behaviors for me, I can’t bring myself to like it.

I’m like this with many other antagonists and villains for books/tv/movies, I understand that the characters is complex and has their own motivations and view point, but I just don’t really care.

I think it’s like the “but I would never to this if I were in your shoes” kind of thinking
