“Do you have 4C third period?” Ask the imperious voice from the doorway. Bernie looks up from where she’s tightening the laces on her rugby boots.

“Yes, why?”

“They keep showing up to my biology class too wired or too exhausted to pay attention. I know you big macho PE teachers like to run them wild, but you’d do well to recall there are other subjects on the curriculum.”

“Well,” Bernie takes in the flowing blouse and the tailored trousers and oh it must be nice to be able to wear jewellery all day, to never sweat through the morning’s foundation. It makes her Adidas tracksuit feel very dowdy by comparison. "It must be very serious if it’s got one of you down from your ivory tower.“

“Hardly a tower with three floors, Ms…”

“Wolfe. Berenice Wolfe.” Bernie stands and offers her regulation firm handshake. Why did she give her full name? It’s not like this woman can put her in detention. “Don’t suppose you’d like to discuss this over a cuppa?”

“That might be acceptable. Serena Campbell, by the way.”

“Oh, Head of Science. Nice to put a face to the reputation.”

“Oh, don’t you bloody start.”

“Tea?” Bernie reminds her. “Only we clearly both have a free period, and there’s that little place just past the gates.”

“Fine, fine,” Serena responds. “But whoever loses this argument is paying, deal?”

“Deal.”
