oh my god, but what is this painting without the dinosaur?
PLEASE SHARE‼️
Mill Canyon Dinosaur Tracksite, one of the most important sites of its kind in North America, has been partially destroyed by the Utah Bureau of Land Management. The tracksite previously contained over 200 trace fossils representing a myriad of prehistoric species, including various dinosaurs and ancient crocodilians, all dated to the Early Cretaceous.
What has transpired goes in violation of the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act and the Center for Biological Diversity is filling a Freedom of Information Act request to the Utah BLM in regards to the incident. In the meantime, I encourage folks to spread the word about this, and to contact the Moab BLM field office to voice your concern over what has been done.
⚠️ UPDATE (as of February 1st 2022)
Today the Utah Bureau of Land Management’s Moab Field Office held a Zoom meeting regarding how they manage resources, wherein the public could make comments + ask questions. Those who attended and inquired about the incident at Mill Canyon were either ignored or outright lied to:
And the following is an excerpt from “112 million-year-old dinosaur tracks near Moab damaged by machinery, experts say” from the Salt Lake Tribune:
⚠️ UPDATE (as of February 4th 2022)
File a complaint with the U.S. Department of the Interior here, and please continue to spread the word!
This is absolutely fucking horrifying.
I was just at this site in December and.. it’s honestly one of the most spectacular tracksites I’ve ever seen. To hear it’s been damaged so carelessly has me seeing red.
Here’s a few pics of how it looked when I was there… all those little dark, snowmelt-filled depressions? All dinosaur footprints.
I sincerely hope that whoever fucked up on this one is held accountable.
just learned that magnolias are so old that they’re pollinated by beetles because they existed before bees
They existed *before beetles*
Why is this sad? Why am I sad?

This is how I feel about Joshua Trees. They and avocado trees produce fruit meant to be eaten and dispersed by giant ground sloths. Without them, the Joshua Trees' range has shrunk by 90%.
(my own photos)
Not only they, but the entire Mojave ecosystem is still struggling to adapt since the loss of ground sloth dung. their chief fertilizer.
Many, many trees and plants in the Americas have widely-spaced, extremely long thorns that do nothing to discourage deer eating their leaves, but would've penetrated the fur of ground sloths and mammoths. Likewise, if you've observed a tree that drops baseball or softball-sized fruit which lies on the ground and rots, like Osage Oranges, which were great for playing catch at my school, chances are they were ground sloth or mammoth chow.
You can read about various orphaned plants and trees missing their megafauna in this poignant post:
Trees that once depended on animals like the wooly mammoth for survival have managed to adapt and survive in the modern world.

learning about rocks changes your life because there's no such thing as an ordinary rock. they're all interesting. they all have a history. you can pick one off the ground for free, and it's cool and full of facts and qualities and geologic time.
i want to travel across the country to find rocks on the ground. The whole world is like a video game map full of shiny cool unique items. endless dopamine. love in my heart overflowing. ROCKS
