big fan of the theory that if nigel & alex were to ever succumb to their obvious attraction to each other, it likely wouldn't be in the midst of a heated argument or a thunderous fight.

i like to think it would be in a quiet, reclusive moment - perhaps in the crawlspace; a vicinity that allows alex to discreetly puts his moral differences aside and listen intently as nigel guides him through his book of philosophical fixations.

a cause so macabre, yet alex finds himself wanting to know more, asking nigel questions of a substantive nature. he receives uncharacteristically patient and unequivocal responses from nigel, who moves closer as alex's lips mold tempting words, spoken with subliminal meaning. alex looks up as nigel's shadow dims the page his finger has been tracing, exhaling a soft, "what?" and yet, there are no traces of confusion on his face. and so, nigel bridges the space between them, pressing their lips together in a moment of fervent vulnerability, as alex's defenses crumble in tandem.

per my most recent rb i DO think nigel unambiguously was exposed to sexual violence at a very young age and the most likely scenario is probably hearing his mother being raped through the walls. i think a lot of nigel’s early predilections towards exploring violence (lets be real dude was cutting up dead birds from a VERY young age) can be explained through always seeing the results of the abuse john was perpetrating against his mother while infrequently seeing his dad actually hurt his mother in front of him. he then develops this understanding that sex is fundamentally about power and always violent. and he’s growing up as this little queer kid who doesn’t understand much other than that feeling the way he does is NOT normal because HE is fundamentally abnormal and of course that twisting of desire and his perception of himself as Bad is reinforced. he wants to hurt people (feels sexual desire) just like his father does. so he maps that onto corpses who fundamentally CANNOT be hurt yet simultaneously venerates the nature of such a sex act as something powerful and important which connects him to a higher purpose.

we've seen nigel's build, he could've definitely managed to pin him down on one of the beds. alex being himself, would've obviously tried to get out of it, regain some control, bucking up to throw him off - all the while nigel uses his own strength to keep himself anchored on top of alex - the two actions only creating friction between them, making them both gasp.

and despite the momentary ecstasy, despite being mutually transfixed, nigel deliberately presses down, provoking alex in a way that makes him almost snap back into the uncharacteristic trance he does whenever nigel violates moral code.

let nigel act on his motives, let his philosophies bleed wild and free on the canvas of alex's mind. it mattered less and less that this was more reprehensible than anything he could've imagined - despite what he had imagined. despite trying to shut his brain off, oh yes, he had.

It's 5am, I can't sleep because I'm anxious, and my tired ass decided to now think about Forbie and kinks.

Warning: uh, sex talk. A lot of it is unhealthy LMAO - but also, I think that's kinda expected of them so.

Because, like? Do I think these two fuckers are the kinkiest pairing around? Yes. Do I also think that most of it isn't even disclosed to the other, so it's also prone to being unhealthy? Also, yes.

I do think it's usually consensual whenever it comes up; I just don't think there's any prior conversations about it or warnings that come up. Like, Alex smacks Nigel around quite a bit, and he isn't really thinking about Nigel's pleasure in those moments, but Nigel does enjoy that shit. And I am a major believer of the "Alex tends to lean towards aspects of CNC based on how often he vocally protests, but doesn't actually stop anything, because he's secretly into it and doesn't want to admit it". And I'm sure, to some degree, Nigel is aware of that, because he also expects Alex to come around either way. But also, you can argue that he was already crossing boundaries to begin with, and never thought of Alex's explicit consent on any parts. Kinda like... the idea of thinking "well, he's always okay with it so I don't need to ask" which is NOT a great idea, but also, he's usually right?? So, I guess, go off.

There's also the added element of them thriving off the power flipping they usually have; neither are consistently in control of the other because usually there will be a struggle and push back at some point. This is genuinely why I cannot firmly stick to one view of their sexual dynamics because I cannot imagine them wanting to; sub or dom, top or bottom, they do it all and will even switch midway.

Also, um, a fucked up detail but, I usually see them being sides, right? And I can imagine either of them (mostly Alex) using penetrative sex as a way to humiliate and domineer the other. In those moments, it's not about the other's pleasure (again, mostly Alex, because since getting pleasure from being overpowered and humiliation are very linked to him, Nigel tends to lean towards making sure he's enjoying it. While Alex usually does it out of retaliation, and doesn't want Nigel to have the upper hand during it.)

Also, again, I think Nigel enjoys impact play. He enjoys the bruises he'd gain afterwards, whether Alex understands that in the moment or not. In that same path, I think Nigel also bites, which 1.) gets him hit harder, because he's nearly broken skin a few times (he has broken skin before, but he gets more than a beating at that point) and 2.) is a very make or break moment for them (Alex either gets too pissed off to continue, or he gets rougher, aka Nigel wins).

There is some petplay essence lingering in there somewhere; it's not explicit, but there's something about Nigel being a rabid dog or something and needing to be restrained and tamed. It's in there somewhere.

Yes, agree basically with everything said here. Constant power struggles, deeply toxic and unnegotiated kinks being played out, not one bit of attention of thought given to things like "consent". And if you boil it down, I think you could say that entire dynamic IS their basic, foundational kink as a couple. No matter what they do, this is how they do it: by inflicting it on each other, evoking the responses they want without discussion or concern for the other's wishes.

I've said elsewhere that I think they absolutely could never simply settle into any particular roles - top, bottom, dominant, submissive, whatever - because their relationship RELIES on the fight for control. They don't have a power exchange, they have a power struggle. If either of them ever "won" in any lasting sense, they'd both get bored of the whole thing.

I hadn't considered them as sides, but then I do be coming from a strongly allosexual viewpoint, so I tend to overlook that dynamic. I like this proposal of them using penetrative sex as yet another tool of domination or humiliation. I still think for me, Alex is not reallllly a side; I think he's into penetration (as the giver AND the receiver, even if he's not able to just admit that that's true).

Nigel...well, I think he could take it or leave it when it comes to normal penetrative sex. I think he's not really concerned about the "standard "traditional" parts of a sexual relationship, much like many other kinky ace people. I don't peg him (ha) as sex-repulsed necessarily, just not especially invested in that part except as it concerns the expression of the other kinks we've already talked about. He definitely gives off big masochist vibes in the movie, and I DEFINITELY can see the biting thing, and maybe other behaviors of a similar nature meant to provoke Alex into deeper violence.

Sitting here right now, I'm thinking about how bruises and welts would show up so starkly on Nigel's porcelain skin, and I think Alex would actually very much enjoy that specific aspect of it. Looking at those marks that HE made, like a sign of possession, ownership, marking his territory. I think he'd never want to allow Nigel to be completely free of those signs of his control.

also, relating to @laurelwen's point - saw this fairly popular video 'interview with a sociopath,' wherein the woman diagnosed w/ ASPD is asked how two sociopaths would be if in a relationship, and she says "they would be in a power struggle constantly" OR "become notorious criminals" - and with forbie essentially being both, it's so interesting to me that our perception of them unconsciously, at some points, aligns with the director's intent (sorry this was kind of unrelated but it's so cool to me)

anyhow, adding to op's wonderful interpretations, (tamer, but i've been thinking about this a lot) i can definitely see nigel leaning in over and over again -> pulling away, and noticing the way alex tries to close the distance - an example of alex's shallow resistance (he seemingly doesn't want to engage, yet he always comes back) can you tell i need someone to desperately write a fic about this

i sometimes wonder how open they would be to actual intercourse, i actually do think nigel is somewhat on the asexual spectrum which in turn makes it easier for him to be seductive in the way he manipulates alex (this begs the question, how would he view & approach this kind of intimacy with him?) but there's no doubt in my head that he wants to close the distance somehow.

alex on the other hand, his traits (lack of control + eventual submission) imo just really makes it a 5050 on whether he would be on the giving or receiving end, initiating or not. it's pretty evident that he often tinkers, almost forces his mind to struggle and make sense of the enigma that is nigel colbie, so it would make sense if he alternates between the two lol
