Wow, stop the press! What is shoved up your ass? I have never seen such a hard look before!
Wait, sorry. That was just the ugliness of it. Man, thought it wasn’t for once.

The whimper that had been threatening to leave her, finally leaked out and her pitiful whine filled the car. It eased up on the wolf, it no longer felt the need to have to prove toward her alpha that she was a good wolf and she could be a good pack mate. She had been completely flooded with fear that this would be it, her last view of a town she learned to grow around before he would set her running off to the real wolves, a rabbit chase that was ultimately for her death. She felt ashamed at how pathetic she must have sounded, at how brash her reaction had been but this pack, Lucas and his wolves, they were the first real people to take her in, despite her latency. And when her wolf had finally made it’s appearance, their acceptance hadn’t changed.
"It’s not usually like this, I swear. It’s probably the town, so many others like us and other supernatural beings that it drives my wolf into a frenzy." Before it had been manageable, livable but this was all body consuming, flames licking up the sides of her body, slowly destroying her. His wolf shifted through and her wolf clawed out at the thought of being given free reign, a time where she could let go and still have someone who could pull her back from the point of no return. He was looking to her, he wanted her to step up, her. She nodded, to what, she wasn’t sure but she didn’t trust herself to speak now, not with emotions choking her.
His eyes darkened to navy when she spoke about the others like them and the other supernatural beings. He didn't like it anymore than she did. In fact, he probably disliked it more than she could. At the mere thought of the other pack, his 'wolf erupted with a fury that he could barely contain. He had claimed Emerald Cove, it was his territory. His alone. He had fought for his pack, he had killed for his pack and it was now his. Each step that band of mutts took to his wolves, they tempted death. If Lucas gave in to his origins, he would have killed every single one of those New Orleans wolves. He would have killed them and hung them up by their feet by the town sign as a warning to others. His fangs were sharp, already aching to be sunk into the neck of the other alpha as a tempest fiercely burned in his chest.
"I doubt you are alone in that, Poppy." His voice came out calm, controlled. His eyes glanced out the window to the expanse of evergreen. "Get out of the car, we're shifting now." Lucas opened his door and stepped out, the wind cutting at his face but he barely felt it. Inwardly, the 'wolf prowled back and forth, ready to be let loose. He listened for any sound of approaching cars but all he heard was the sharp whistle of the wind. He wound around the car toward Poppy's door and opened it for her, dipping his blue eyes to her face.
Sadie tilted her head to the side, biting the side of her lip as she always did when she was thinking. “It’s different because when you’re blunt, you tell people things they don’t want to hear automatically. There isn’t really that whole ‘hey, maybe you shouldn’t say that’ warning bell that rings out. When you tell the truth, simply do the act of telling the truth, you have that little warning. Being blunt is a part of someone. Tell the truth is a choice.” Sadie explained the best way she could, shrugging her shoulders after. It wasn’t a question that ever came up around her, she mostly hear people scoffing and walking away or just awkwardly laughing and changing the subject. “You’re very impressionable, that’s why. I have a million more meetings to make more assumptions about you. Impossibly not to run into you in town ever again and you will be doing work for me. A little bad for me because you’ll be in my natural habitat so I’ll have to pretend like I’m a normal human being of society.” She laughed quietly, pushing the hair in her face away with a free hand. “What would I like to know…” The young woman pondered the question, wondering what she would like to know. Everything. He was quite mysterious. “Is it just you here? Do you have family or someone special? Another assumption, you seem like the loner type. Except, the loner who actually wants to be around people but hide it.” She added the end jokingly.
"Impressionable? And here I was trying to be inconspicuous." The words came out as teasing, but once again, Lucas was being serious. He had tried to be inconspicuous for his pack, even while the wolf in him wanted him to be impressionable to others. His attention was directed back to Sadie, raising an eyebrow as she spoke. "Are you not a normal human being of society? I didn't know being blunt made you other than that." As she pondered his question, Lucas prepared himself for what she would ask and how she would answer. "It's just me in my family here." That part was the truth. If his family had been here, the town would have been in flames with murder and carnage everywhere. His siblings wouldn't have stood for peace. They craved the chaos. "I have family but they're back in New York. I have friends here, and no, I'm not the loner type." He was pack through and through, his wolf craving the companionship of other wolves. But, his position was what had made him different. Lucas was a loner, as an alpha, one had to be a loner. He protected his pack, loved them, but he could not be close to any of them specifically. He had to be neutral. He had to push his wants aside for the good of the group. Lucas was an island and that's how it was supposed to be. He was supposed to be a strong, supportive, figure of authority. He didn't complain about it, he didn't sigh about it, he accepted it, shrugged it off and continued to take care of his pack. He had known what would come with the title when he had ripped his father's throat out.

She laid her hands upon her lap, her fingers biting into the fabric of her jeans, pinching at the skin underneath. Her hands tightened until the white of bone shone through with the force, until she wanted to cry out at her machinations. She had done wrong, she knew that much. Her wolf wanted so desperately to roll over and submit, to expose her belly to him and allow for whatever punishment he would inflict upon her. Poppy didn’t meant to lash out, didn’t want to slash out at him. She opened her mouth to say sorry but kept quiet instead.
Would he kick her out of the pack? Would she have to beg for mercy to stay? She bit at her lip, holding back the whimper that wanted to escape. She was sorry but it was her wolf, it was the moon, it was unlike anything she had previously known. Poppy was sorry but her wolf didn’t know any better, had never had guidance like Lucas before. She was untamed, untrained, unknowing. She watched the town blur away, the cars speed turning everything into a blur.
Lucas floored it out of the town, foot pressed firmly down on the gas until the buildings had been replaced by dense trees. His eyes flicked to her face occasionally but he didn't say anything. "Just breathe, Poppy." His voice wasn't as rough this time, coming out softer. He'd been where she was, except when he was growing up, he had to embrace the feral side of himself or his siblings would have eaten him alive, literally. He kept driving until they were far, far away from the town, where running into a human would be unlikely. He veered the car off the road, coming to a stop at the side of the road. Lucas put the car into park and turned off the ignition, turning his head to look at the blonde beside him. He'd never done well with comforting someone, so instead, he cleared his throat.
“You lost control because you’re fighting new to it all. That isn't something to be ashamed of, it's just a simple fact. You're more emotional, you're more out of control and everyone's been where you are. Pushing that down and not coming to me for help isn't going to help you in the long run because I can help you control it, Poppy.” Shifting his eyes, teeth, and claws to show Poppy the stronger part of himself, he continued, “You're going to start running with me everyday. We're going to start off as humans and then shift to wolves to allow yourself that freedom. We're going to start exposure therapy to blood, to violence, to prey.” His tongue rubbed against his fangs. "You're a good wolf, Poppy and I expect you to be one of the best. Gemma's busy at the moment, she's not around as often as I like so I'm going to need someone to start stepping up and helping me out. Sutton's too young, too human. So, I'm looking at you."
The Eastwood Siblings
A cold wind, a wild storm and a burning fire.
"Y’ever hear ‘bout those Eastwood siblings? Born and raised as a feral group, father was nothin’ more than a powerhungry alpha. Ran his pack right into the ground. His pups all wanted to be alpha but only the oldest pup was the one to go and kill that father of theirs, taking over. He’s a cold sonuvabitch, that one. The girl simply left and hasn’t looked back since. Rumor is she’s up north as a lone wolf, laughing and killing any wolf who tries to make her part of their pack, creating quite a ruckus. As for the youngest, news is that the hothead joined some pack down in New Orleans as some sort of revenge against the oldest. Glad as hell they’re not around here anymore.

Poppy had been so distracted with trying to keep herself under control that she hadn’t even noticed Lucas approach her, hadn’t smelled him near. His voice that was normally a rough croon that she liked to hear was like sandpaper over her skin. She snapped at him, her teeth snapping down down into a near homicidal grin. “What do you think!” A growl rose in her throat and her wolf clawed at her insides, wanting to tear out of her just to be free. But she bit down the urge, bit down on the shift that was riding her, fraying at her nerves.
But her wolf won out in the end, realizing just who she had snapped at. She downcast her eyes and Poppy had to fight the human need to bare her throat at him. She hadn’t meant to snap at her alpha, didn’t want to put herself in this place that she had, didn’t want to feel submissive. “I’m sorry, Luc. It’s just a little much right now.” She wondered if every full moon would now be like this, would she always be this hungry for the hunt? Poppy found herself starving for it, her wolf howling in need.
Had they not been in public, Lucas would have bared his teeth at her disrespect. Even now, claws threatened to sprout so he could grab her by the nape of the neck and drag her away to the forest. Had they been back in New York, under the command of his father, her throat would have been torn open as other wolves ripped her open in a frenzy. But they weren't in New York, things were different and he wouldn't be ripping out her throat. That brought anarchy and lawlessness, and while he was all for displaying his power, she was still new and he would help her until she put the entire pack in danger. Then he'd take severe action.
He reached out and put a hand on her shoulder, eyes searching hers. He shifted her hand down to grip her upper arm, tightening his fingers around her. "Walk quickly." He steered her away from the crowd and toward his car. Usually Lucas would be loath to let anything happened to his car but at the moment, his car came second compared to the girl with him. Using his free hand, he yanked open the sidedoor. "Get in. Try to stay human until we reach the woods." He let go of her and wound around the car, climbing into the driver's seat.

A cloud of silver billowed in front of her mouth, the cold glowering around her, shrouding her, making her bones rattle. But this cold was like a discipline. Her nerves were frayed and short and staying with the pack was out of the question. Slowly, they were driving her insane. The full moon was soon upon them, a near week away but she it was building on her wolf. She only had a handful of years with her wolf, learning to live with the other side of her had been a challenge and this was another one of those moments.
Her wolf growled out and her eyes flashed to the topaz of her other half. Her skin itched but this was not the place to shift, not in the middle of crowded street. She looked around, her breath huffing out faster and faster until Poppy felt like she was going to snap. Her foot kicked the snow covered ground, her boot scuffing the white away. What was she even doing here? “What a fucking waste of time.” She could have been doing runs, making sure her tech was running perfectly. (But of course it was.) Instead she was driving herself insane.
He smelled her before he saw her, but soon his eyes fell on her golden head. Her sunny features were at odds with the stormy expression raging over her face. With the upcoming moon, his wolf was more aware of its packmates and its own nature, so when he saw her, the wolf in him recognized her as one of his own. His blue eyes narrowed slightly on her face and his gait quickened until he was right near her. He didn't wait until she noticed him to speak.
"Rough day, Poppy?" His voice came out rough, gravelly from the silence he had adopted ever since leaving the workplace. His eyes roved over her face, taking her in. Running into her had been purely chance, but now he was glad that he did run into her. The last thing he needed was something or someone pissing her off so much that she shifted. His eyes flicked to her face, the low light causing the gold flecks in his eyes to glint. If anyone saw it, they would mistake it for a trick of the light but it wasn't. Lucas had spent so much time as a wolf as a child, that the amber had worked its way permanently into his eyes. He thought it could be worse, he could have fur behind his ears permanently from staying in wolf form so often.

"No, which is a same really. I have manners, but I’ve been told my habit of being blunt washes it out." She shrugged one of her shoulders, her face telling that she didn’t care much what people thought. "Yes. I mean, you’d think someone from an old fashioned family wouldn’t be so…so cold. Not cold, cold. You just are very stand offish, don’t want people around." Sadie said quietly. "Yes, you have. Congrats. But tell me more about you, mister mysterious." She leaned into him purposely this time, pretending to be looking into his soul from his eyes. "Tell me something and I’ll tell you something? Not that you care about me and my silly little life, but I’m curious. And curiosity did kill the cat."
"Truth is the truth, dancing around it to not hurt someone is just a waste of time." He replied, eyes fixed on the road up in front of him. He didn't know where he was walking her to, only that he was going to keep walking straight until she directed him otherwise. "How is it different from being blunt?" He inquired, but he couldn't help the corners of his lips turning up into a sardonic smile. Standoffish was a tame word for what he was. "You have quite a few assumptions about me based on only three meetings, Miss Bradley." Her weight on his arm increased and her scent strengthened to the point that he couldn't escape it no matter how far he turned his head. Naturally, it brought the wolf to stir in his chest. Hunger started its slow expanse through his body, but Lucas was more than used to that certain hunger. It never really went away even though he was more adept at ignoring it in his older age now, but it was particularly strong tonight. Maybe it was the young woman treading so close to the dangerous line. "What would you like to know?"
"Old fashioned." Sadie repeated, thinking to herself as she looked up at him. "What kind of old fashioned? I mean, there’s good and bad. I’m going to assume good, although your personality seems to beg to differ. You’re a very hard man to figure out." Sadie avoided a patch of ice, leaning a bit into Lucas so she could get around it. The last thing she wanted was to slip. "My parents were a nice mix or modern and old fashion. Also city and country, hence the living outside of the city." Turning her head completely around to face him, she looked over his face and then shamelessly looked him up and down. "Attractive, nice jaw, few wrinkles. You’re not much older than me. You can’t be."
"Old fashion as in manners. You'll find not a lot of people nowadays know how to be polite." He spoke without realizing what she said, the words automatic. When he did realize what she said, he shot her a look. "My personality begs to differ?" Cheeky girl. He wove around another patch of ice, the scent of her shampoo and bodywash tickling his sensitive nose. He turned his head away, away from her face and out to the road in front of him. The wind blew toward him, bringing with it the smell of pine and earth. He inhaled deeply before shrugging. "I'm glad to hear that I've passed your age test."
Pocketing her cell phone, Sadie smiled at Lucas and then took his arm. She started walking in the direction she’d been originally going in. “The perfect gentleman? Those are rare to find, takes years and years of searching, really.” Sadie said with a laugh, teasing him despite his vibe that he wasn’t one to be teased. “So what makes you think that a man like you can take better care of himself alone at night than a woman like me?” There was still a clear lightness to her tone, meant to be playful.
"Blame it on my parents. They were old fashioned." The image that Lucas projected to humans was the perfect childhood. Nothing too extravagant, nothing too simply. It sated their curiosity and never gave the impression that he was anything but normal. Her hand was light on his arm as he started forward with her. "It's nothing against your gender. I know plenty of women more than capable to take care of themselves. Let me rephrase the statement, it's dangerous for a young person to be out by themselves in the dark alone."
Sadie readjusted the binders and her arms, trying to make them sit comfortably. It was late, but she knew she’d be home soon enough and it wouldn’t be such a big deal. “A young woman such as myself is not walking around in the dark alone because I have you to walk me home. Or will you deny me that gentlemanly act?” Sadie asked bluntly, but with a smile. She’d always off put people with how blunt she could be but she never paid them any attention.
Little minx. She had turned the conversation to him and he found himself rubbing his tongue against his canine. He'd have to watch this one. She briefly reminded him of Poppy with her bluntness. He shifted his body, offering her his arm. "Of course not. I was raised to be nothing but the perfect gentleman." He spoke smoothly, as if he was saying nothing but the truth. But that wasn't the truth. He'd been raised to rip the flesh off of people like her. The entire pack had, until Lucas had taken over and implemented new rules.
Sadie looked around, noting that there really weren’t many people out and she glanced at the time on her phone. “I suppose it is. I was in the office longer than I thought I was, but I’m used to it. Spend ten hours in the office, another six working at home, and then try to fit in time to sleep!” Sadie had a smile, but it fell slightly at her realization that she was rambling and he probably didn’t care. “Anyway, the distance isn’t too far and I always liked walking in the dark better.”
The familiar frown appeared on his face, causing his brow to furrow and his mouth to tighten. Did she really not know how dangerous it was? Humans never did. All around them, monsters under the bed lurked and they simply thought to walk around without a care. Of course, it's not just Loreans they had to worry about. There were monsters in the human race as well. "Isn't it dangerous for a young woman such as yourself to be walking around in the dark alone?"
