tails doesnt tell sonic when he returns from his solo adventure. he just kinda shows back up at the workshop and the brothers fall back into their regular routine and it takes sonic a second to realize
like sonic walks into the kitchen and gets greeted with a “morning” so obviously he responds with his own “hey”. while hes making breakfast, it dawns on him and he just whirls around like, “HEY!!!!!!!!”

when sonic and the gang reunite, it’s gonna be a snot-filled, ocean-creating, heartwarming sobfest
tails would probably apologize over and over again, saying how sorry he is for not being the hero sonic wanted. and then sonic goes, “why are you sorry? you did everything you could” or something like that
with newfound hope (and the fastest thing alive back on the playing field) the resistance actually starts to fight back
second thing tails learns about sonic after 4 years (first being that he’s alive) is that he’s held captive and apparently being tortured . because of this i think the reunion (although very emotional and heartwarming like you said) has some turbulence
tails desperately doesn’t want to be the one dragging sonic down anymore . hes terrified of losing anyone else so he pushes them away and hides behind his hero persona . sonic is no exception … sonic really hates the lying . it doesn’t help his ability to discern between illusions and reality. so the two sort of reach a stalemate where neither can really get close to the other .
this sort of relationship doesn’t hinder the resistance fully but it definitely doesn’t help it either . the trust issues will keep piling up and up (and others do notice but, like with what happened with tails, they’re far too stressed about other things to give it a lot of attention right now) . plus, if the sonic and tails can’t make it through a war, can anyone?
cats always step precisely on your most sensitive areas when theyre crawling on you lovingly for cuddles. bladder dick ovaries boobs stomach bruise it doesnt matter. they have homing devices on their paws for the exact area you’re most tender at the moment and they put their full weight into that step. and sometimes they might keep their stance midstride so theyre just standing there forever forcing you to endure the pain. because they are simply too cute to get mad at
