There is a certain monomyth of fandom-yaoi that has developed where the Gay Bottom (a bisexual could never be a bottom because then how could have sex with women?) and solely devoted to his more liberated and promiscuous Bisexual Top (he is sexually liberated and promiscuous because he is bisexual) from the very beginning, staying devoted to the Top even while the Top has no such limitations, and the proof of the Top’s devotion comes from his decision to give up his sexually liberated promiscuity in favor of the virginal, chaste Bottom and I think a lot of it is holdover from genre conventions of m/f romance. The top is the archetypical rakish rogue who seduces the virtuous ladygentleman into the romance against herhis better judgement, but then as he falls for herhim, he realizes that his rakish ways were unfulfilling and agrees to settle down and make an honest woman out of herhim.
A lot of people in fandom have been so condition to this monomyth that they chafe if the narrative (in fandom or in canon) doesn’t run along those lines and as the fandom grows, the fanon depictions of those characters get assigned to GayBottom(Woman) and BiTop(Man) and the canon characters get flattened into the monomyth archetypes almost coercively in defiance of any canon evidence to the contrary, a pattern which once you see you really can’t unsee. Accusations of OOC because the bottom isn’t sufficiently serious and obsessed right away, depictions of the bottom in fanart and fanfic as blushing and shy when he’s naturally more outgoing or even aggressive with a temper in the canon. The Top being made out to always be in control of the situation and always the one who better understands the sexual side of the relationship because he is assumed to be more experienced by virtue of being the Top. Fanart that emphasizes a size difference that isn’t nearly as pronounced in canon because there needs to be a visual signifier of who is The Top and who is The Bottom. And this doubles and triples if either party is a person of color.
