Complicated. He loves them as much as he finds them repulsive. For every human who genuinely reached into his good graces, there were also those he hated with every fiber of his being and culled to be his dinner for that night.
If I was to compare him to another character, think Hannibal Lector from Silence of the Lambs. Gentlemanly, well-mannered, intelligent beyond measure.
But also…completely nonchalant about the fact of the matter that he eats humans. He finds no qualms in his diet despite his capability to love them and see them as more then mere meat.
At the end of the Day, the Clock Maker values the individual more then the common populace. He will burn the world for a human if he loves them enough. But that doesn't mean that because one Human has earned that love, someone close to them will is safe from him.
He has killed abusers in the past, and knows how to kill said abusers for the betterment of the human who has found themselves his companionship.
All the while tearing down the person who hurt you so much with mere words as he kills them.

"Needed, Babysitter to care for seven-year old daughter, down payment available after agreement and interview with applicant….Huh, old fashioned and serious." Luere scrolled through her phone for spare jobs for some extra money.
The cut back hours until her boss could find a new employee was starting to hit the woman more then she could admit, seeing her savings start to drain slowly in result of paying for her bills and food.
"What's the kid like….well mannered and polite, likes coloring and usually quiet…..has a peanut food allergy….Requires a public meeting during interview….please dress modestly but casually….Okay, fair enough. There's a lot of parents out there who get paranoid about what people wear around their kids, can't blame them."
Luere would press on the application button as she began to text her request for the interview, already wondering what she was going to wear for the interview.
L: Hello! I'm Luere Ellestia, I heard you were in need of a babysitter for your little one, is the position still open?
She could see the three dots of almost an immediate response, surprising her as she saw the message.
B: Indeed! I'm Benjamin Walteer. Thank you for reaching out. My eldest is unable to take up the mantle currently and my second daughter is out of town. With more people going missing recently it is getting unsafe.
Luere felt a tension as the possible employer's words hit, remembering the fact she knew how and why it was happening. The Freak Circus of Horrors, as much as she couldn't say or wouldn't be able to with how little she knew. She shakes her head, knowing how much she needed the money to keep herself afloat. Besides, the Circus didn't target children, so she would be fine.
L: Yeah it's super scary. Anyway, is there a place you'd prefer to meet up for an interview and I can meet your daughter?
B: There happens to be a cafe where we go to after Viola's school hours. Would it be possible for you to meet with us at the entrance?
Luere's eyes widened slightly in surprised as she saw her usual workplace was highlighted on the map image posted. It felt more and more was lining up with the need for some extra money and what sounded like a well behaved child that only had a peanut allergy to look out for.
L: Ayo I actuallty work there as my regular job and it's in walking distance to my apartment. Absolutely doable!
B: Happy coincidence! Excellent. Remember the dress requirements, and meet with us there in half an hour.
L: o7 got it! What should I look out for?
B: Oh, you'll be able to spot us right away. I tend to stand out amongst the crowds. But if it helps you, keep an eye out for a deep red, 1976's Ford Mustang.
L: Aight, fair enough. See you there! o/
Luere finished the message as she got up from her bed, stretching while going to her closet to pick out what to wear. She would need to be quick and leave as soon as she got changed.
"Casual yet Modest. This guy cares about appearances but clearly for the sake of his child….let's see…." She would take out a T-shirt that was loose fitting with the sleeves up to her elbows. On the front of the shirt was an eastern dragon print over blue cloth, switching it out from the tank top she was wearing prior. A pair of blue cargo pants would cover the rest of herself without being overdone about it. She would look at herself in the mirror.
"…..You know what, why not." She would walk over to her desk, reaching for the gold star pin Pierrot gave her and going back into her dresser drawer for a momet to get out a newspaper cap and apply the pin to it, putting it on.
"Alright." She could grab a simple pair of black sneakers and slip them on, grabbing her back bag and sling it around her shoulders as she locked the door and left her apartment.
Vmm vmm! Luere took out her phone as she saw a message from Pierrot, her heart feeling warm again.
P: How are you doing, my dearest?
L: Doing good, omw to my workplace to meet with someone for a babysitting gig.
There was a pause after Luere sent her message while she made her way down the sidewalk, the sun unable to hit her eyes with the cap shielding them. After a bit, she would see his response.
P: This will not be a difficult job for you, will it, my lady? I understand children can be…difficult to manage.
L: It'll be fine, Pierrot. Besides, the dad wants to do an interview to see how things go before things are official.
It took another moment before Pierrot responded, Luere was certain it was just him making sure his claws weren't damaging the phone screen as he was typing his response.
P: I wish you the best of luck then, my lady. I'm sure you'll do wonderfully.
L: Thanks, Pierrot! Nearing the cafe, signing off.
Luere would put her phone away into her bag as she stretched, enjoying the chilly yet fresh spring air in her lungs as she continued to walk, taking a passing by flyer of the Circus and looking at it. The design was the same. She had to wonder if it was just cheaper to go wth a single type of ink at this point for them.
"Can't be helped, huh? Ah well." She would turn the corner where she heard another commotion, cursing to herself as she went to see the issue.
"Swear to gods if Pierrot is getting bullied again I'm gonna rip-"
"Sir, you're making a scene and I have a very important meeting to attend to."
Luere would see a crowd slightly gathering at the commotion, her head perking up in surprise as she saw the deep red, ford mustang she was instructed to look out for.
'Holy shit he's huge, huge like Pierrot huge! He's way more brawny too from the looks of it. Is he one of them maybe?'
Luere couldn't help but notice how sharply dressed Benjamin was, wearing a fitting, feathered cloak of black and white feathers with a scarf muffler over his mouth and a bowler hat. His clothes did little to hide how massive and muscular he was, his outfit showing a rather eclectic display of wealth, holding a cane and gloved hands resting on the head of it as he was having his dispute. Long, blond hairseemed to reach down to the small of his back under the cloak.
"He's way too calm and composed, he can't be with the Circus."
"Baseless accusation honestly, Mr. Walteer has children too, he wouldn't hurt anyone."
Luere looked around as she caught the source of the issue; the same man who she caught assaulting Pierrot, her stomach dropped.
"Hey, knock it off." She spoke up as she came forward. "First accusing the Circus of the missing persons and now accusing just some guy who got out of his car? I thought I told you to go touch some grass."
There was a chortle among the crowd as she folded her arms, Benjamin looking over to her as he tipped his hat in recognition.
"You….! I bet you're with those freaks, there's nothing natural about them!"
"Dude the only unnatural thing about this guy is his height and even then there's been people with gigantism in the past." Luere countered. "You're letting things get into your head without any sensible proof that he's behind anything."
"Rrr…..fine! But this is the second time you're getting yourself involved with those freaks!"
"Okay then, pop off I guess, but I got somewhere to be with this guy." Luere shrugged as the crowd began to disperse as the confrontation came to an end with the aggressor leaving, looking more peeved then before.
"Ah." Benjamin seemed to smile behind his muffler. "You must be Miss Luere, then! A pleasure, sweet one, and thank you very much for the assistence!"
"No problem. It's not the first time unfortunately with that guy." Luere smiled.
"It seems so." Benjamin would open the back door at long last, a little girl climbing out. She looked like any other human child, her hair cut short to her chin and a deep, almost blackish purple and wearing simple pants and a t-shirt and what looked like light up shoes.
"I'm sorry for the wait, darling."
"It's okay, Daddy!" The small chiled smiled brightly, before seeing Luere who bended over with a smile.
"You must be Viola, yeah?"
Viola's eyes widened as she nodded. "U-Um…hello….! Daddy Daddy, she's so pretty, she kinda looks like Sylvie….!"
"Sylvie?" Luere tilted her head in curiousity as Benjamin chuckled.
"A dear friend and acquaintance of mine, Miss Luere. But yes, this is my youngest, Viola."
It was then Benjamin paused and leaned in, bright red eyes catching onto the star pin on Luere's cap, long enough for Luere to catch that he was looking at it and looking confused for a moment before he straightened himself.
"Now then." He continued. "Shall we head into the cafe, then?"
"Uh yeah, sure!" Luere smiled as Benjamin took up his cane as Viola grabbed one of his hands, looking so much larger then her tiny one.
"Have you babysat before, Miss Luere?" He assked, Luere shrugging.
"What broke teenager hasn't, honestly? Pocket money was pocket money in those times. Truthfully I do need the cash since my hours here are cut due to circumstances."
"Aaaahhh. The financial woes of things out of your hands. All too common."
Ring ring! Benjamin opens the door, letting Luere through first as Viola followed eagerly afterwards.
"Careful where you step, Viola."
"Ah, Benjamin, Luere!" Luere could hear her boss from the counter as he was filling orders. "your usual Table's cleared, Ben."
"Thank you, Nataneal! I'll have my usual rose and peaflower tea and juice for Viola. Is there anything you'd like, Miss Luere?"
"Just my taro boba, Boss."
"Comin' right up." Nataneal was quick to get to work as Benjamin led Luere to his preferred table, Viola hopping onto a chair and looking out at the passerby while humming.
"Now then." Benjamin would take out what looked like a form, passing it to Luere as she took it and began to read. "These are all of Viola's actual dietary restrictions outside of her peanut allergy, alongside her bedtime and associated rituals."
"Yeah I wanted to ask about that actually, how bad is the allergy for her?"
"Um….." Viola would speak up. "I swell up a lot. It's super uncomfy. I even have a doctor's note for my teachers that say I can't have peanut butter or any peanut-based snacks during snack time in class."
Luere nodded to the child, smiling.
"This is all based on actual consumption, mind you." Benjamin would state. "Some….past, babysitters would complain about her being a picky child, but in truth she's just avoiding what she's allergic to."
"Don't worry, she won't get anything like that under my care." Luere continued reading the form. "And I can't say I blame you for wanting to make sure she's in good hands. There's nightmare stories of this kind of stuff with parents and babysitters who don't actually take care of their kids."
"Usually big sis Izzy looks after me if Daddy works late, but something happened and she can't right now." Viola piped up. "And Sylvie's super busy with his studies."
"Which brings me to this conundrum." Benjamin smiled and patted her head. Luere nodded in understanding.
"Finding someone last minute's a hassel…..crap, where's my pen…." Luere started to go through her bag, being mindful of her usual dirty language in the presence of such a young mind before she found it, clicking it and signing her name on the waiver.
'It's so easy for me to forget there's a child right there. Keep your mouth clean, Luere!'
"Thank you very much, Miss Luere." Benjamin took the signed form before handing her a copy.
It was at this point Luere would see a shadow for a split moment, before seeing the window fogged up and little hearts drawn on it, smiling at them.
'You big, fucking goofball, you really can't help yourself, can you?'
"With that out of the way, Miss Luere." She would look over to Benjamin, noting the curious look in his eyes as he seemed to catch the fogged hearts on the window, their drinks being served as he was looking back at her. Viola would go into her backpack and take out a handheld game system and her juice with a thank you.
"Have you been to the Circus any?"
"…Yeah." Luere smiled. "My favorite's the Pierrot, honestly. But a part of that is also personal bias. I happen to be close with him."
"Aaaaah, a lucky man, then." Benjamin nodded as if in approval, his eyes trailing once more to the gold star pin.
"Few are kind to him unfortunately. I happen to have some rapport with the members there, so it eases me there's people who do not treat them harshly or target them to take out their anger and fears."
Luere's eyebrows raised at that, noting the rather…protective yet still kind tone in his voice, her own eyes trailing to his cloak as he was saying his words before she responded.
"I mean, they're just trying to get by like anyone else, right? We shouldn't judge on how people need to survive. Course, I say that, but nothing's clear cut. Morality is just various shades of grey. And then you got the guys who are just genuinely terrible people out there."
Benjamin chuckles, taking his tea and swirling it for a moment before taking a sip.
"How true those words are, Miss Luere. Someone will claim they're just trying to get by, but then do truly heinous things in that self justification. Some people just can't be happy unless they hurt someone else. But not all is doom and gloom, it never has been." He stated.
"The World is that of chaos, Miss Luere. All of us are capable of the darkest of evils, and the most sincere kindness at the same time. To put things in a one-dimensional space is simply a crime. After all, who am I in my wealth to deny the begger his succor and need for shelter? We all need to help another in times dire."
"Exactly. I mean, it's how I met Pierrot. The guy you were having problems with? He was giving Pierrot problems too, and I intervened. I can't stand it when someone can't defend themselves. Besides, he's silent because it's a part of his act, so he can't even if he wanted too."
There was a silence from Benjamin as Luere described that fateful day, noting the rather soft smile on her face, her eyes half lidded as she reached up for the pin.
"He means quite a bit to you, doesn't he?" The question was soft-toned. Not accusatory, certainly not pointed. But it still stirred quite the reaction, Luere's face flushing a deep red and Viola giggled a bit at the older woman's face as Benjamin couldn't help but smile behind his muffler in his own amusement.
"It's quite alright, sweet one. Some things happen regardless of the flows and ebbs of life and time, and often at our own expenses. If nothing else, you're quite fortunate it's him and not another." He tilts his head in his smile and Viola sipped more of her juice.
"For what it is worth from me, Luere…..You're a possibility of many varieties."
Luere looked at Benjamin in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"It could have been anyone who helped him that day. Someone like you, who was working at this quaint little cafe, who wanted to help him simply because they could.
You're quite the rare gift to Pierrot for that, sweet one. And it will be up to you how you wish to advance your story with him."
Bejamin was sipping at his tea as he was speaking, Luere's own boba tea half-finished and both confused and marveling at his words.
"You hold a power with people no one else does, sweet one. Use it well." Benjamin finished his tea, setting down the cup elegantly without a sound.
Luere was only more confused at this gentleman's words as he took out his wallet, counting some money in his hands as he stood up from his chair, Viola taking notice as she put her game away and finished her juice.
"A very pleasant conversation with you, sweet one. I will call on you for your services and at your and Nataneal's convienience, with the promised down payments. Do not worry about your hours with this place." He would take Viola's hand as Luere was left with his parting words, leading his daughter out of the store after paying for the drinks.
