hello, i never understood how does "sees relationships as more intimate than they are" works and is experienced in hpd
People with HPD often feel uncomfortable if they’re not emotionally engaged with others. Because of that, even small interactions can feel very important or meaningful.
Basic things like someone being polite, casual joking, and brief personal sharing, can be experienced as signs of a deeper bond ("they really get me," "we have something special").
The person may feel attached very quickly, use affectionate language early ("you're one of the only people I trust"), and assume mutual closeness without it actually being established.
HPD involves strong emotional expression. So when they act warm, open, or dramatic, it can feel like a close relationship. Both to them and sometimes to the other person.
There can be difficulty recognizing different levels of relationships (acquaintance vs. close friend), and how much emotional intimacy is actually mutual. So, the internal feeling ("we’re close") doesn’t match the external reality.
It’s not usually intentional or manipulative. The feeling of closeness is often genuine; it’s just based on misinterpretation and emotional amplification.
