Tipsy, buzzed evenings alone.

How I've craved for days like this. Bordering on a fantasy. A quiet home, a city that doesn't get too warm, a scented candle, and no angry man in the house. The streets outside are quiet. My belly is full. I can lie down and cozy up under my soft quilt that I chose and bought....any moment now. I had a drink with my food.

I also worked about ten hours today. Had some laughs with friends. Then returned to an empty room. Turned on my warm yellow lights.

Complex thoughts are meant to exist, right? Uncomfortable feelings, difficult emotions joy. I do crave the weight of someone lying on top of me so close it just barely allows me to breathe. A silent promise of tomorrow. That isn't meant to be. It never was. But that ain't a travesty. Because the present itself is a miracle.

The sheer existence of January of 2026 is an insanity compared with autumn of 2022. Or April of 2017. Summer of 2011. November of 2008. And yet here we are.

Happiness, I've realised, is intrinsically not as dominant an emotion as despair. It doesn't take over the mind, body and soul. That's simply not what it does. It simmers under layers of joy and sorrow and cringe and lust and hope. In fact, I'm not even sure if it's an actual emotion, or a syntax for emotions.

Tomorrow morning, I'm leaving town for three weeks. Yesterday I spent the whole day with a gang of friends. We went birding. We went to a festival. Had a couple drinks. Went for dinner. It was an almost perfect day. One of those magical days that fill you to the brim with happy buzzy feelings. The way back home was hard. Even if just for three weeks, it was HARD to say "I'll see you in December". It was FUCKING SCARY thinking the delicate balance of my life now, that can culminate in a day like yesterday, may change fundamentally when I'm back later.

Usually on times like this, my brain would punish me. Hurt me. Force me into a "yes, this WILL go away. You aren't worthy. This is the last time you'll EVER get to feel this. Do you want to keep living knowing that? DO YOU? i thought so." Some version of these words, over and over in my head, crystal clear.

Yesterday something magical happened. As usual my brain kept repeating one line over and over. But the line was "It's okay to have complicated feelings about this. Sadness is a normal reaction."

And it was so jarring it made me pause in wonder. Then be sad, cry. Really dwell on the fears and discomfort and sadness. But the crying didn't descend into a meltdown. I didn't have trouble falling asleep. I didn't have nightmares. I didn't wake up today feeling scared and hopeless. I was...fine.

My brain....was on my side. She took stock of the situation and went...yk what? Let's sit with the discomfort. It's okay. We can be sad. Nobody rn is out to leverage the sadness and hurt us. It's safe to be sad. It's safe to cry. It's safe to have doubts. It's safe to have fears.

I....is this how people live normally? I'm glad YET mourning for what I've lost in all the years in my traumatized haze.
