idk but sometimes i think that if Edgar did one thing right, it was to raise Cathy 2 in a home filled with love (even though he also stifled her by refusing to let her leave the grounds, and put her in danger by refusing to tell her the family stories, all for his own comfort). and sometimes i think that if Heathcliff did anything right, it was to protect Hareton (even though he also blocked Hareton's education and opportunities in life, all for his own revenge). and often i think that if those two crazy kids do have a chance out there, it's at least partly due to these slim little blessings that the last generation passed down alongside all its curses.

the great tragedy of wuthering heights is that heathcliff got his revenge on hindley the day hareton started looking at him as his dad and loving him while hating hindley. but heathcliff’s so obsessed with destroying the denizens of wuthering heights and thrushcross grange that he literally does not recognize that hareton loving him and listening to him is hindley’s greatest defeat.

and that it’s perfectly fine for him to love hareton as a son with no regrets, because hareton loves him as a father just as much.

Heathcliff and Hareton my beloveds. No one has ever pseudo father-sonned quite like you. What do you mean he raised Hareton. What do you mean he was the only vaguely reliable adult for the majority of Hareton's life. What do you mean Heathcliff wished he was his son, but never could forget he was Hindley's. What do you mean Hareton was the only one to mourn Heathcliff, despite how awful he was. Why'd they'd put cocaine in this book.

Why does no one talk about how the moment that Heathcliff gave up on his revenge was when he actually got a look at Hareton and Catherine by the fireplace in that peaceful scene, which is described in a lot of detail on how pleasant and serene it was, and then he specifically say that he didn't see Catherine in Hareton but himself. The fact that he saw Hareton getting what he had always wanted, what he never got a chance to have, to be with Catherine and be accepted and be happy by the hearth. That was what ended his decades long resolution, it singlehandedly made him give up on it. He didn't end it for Catherine but for himself, at the end he couldn't bring himself to do exactly what had been done to him, what had started him on that path in the first place. As cruel as he had become.

The fucked up bond between Heathcliff and Hareton haunts me. Nelly is convinced that Heathcliff hurt Hareton more than anyone, but to Hareton, Heathcliff was a protector in a nearly fatally unstable home. Heathcliff wished Hareton was his son, but always treated him as his enemy's son.

And Hareton knows Heathcliff does bad things. When Cathy Jr tries to turn him against Heathcliff and promises she can tell him tales of Heathcliff's doings that will justify that enmity - he doesn't say that he doesn't believe her, he doesn't have any counterpoint to offer against what she'd say about Heathcliff, he just says that he doesn't want to hear anyone speak ill of him. He knows what kind of person Heathcliff is, and he loves him.

And love isn't enough.

Heathcliff mocks him behind his back and blocks his opportunities in life, and thinks it's funny that Hareton loves him. He only sees himself in Hareton when it's too late, and then he up and dies! And Hareton is the only one who really mourns him!!! How am I supposed to be normal about this book, I ask you
