Before anyone says it, YES, we ALWAYS vote for the lesser evil, until we can actually vote for non-evil. Choosing not to vote is to actively vote against your best interest. If you aren't happy with either candidate, *vote for the one that isn't actively seeking to rob and kill you and yours*.

And then, once you've voted, get to work promoting better election systems, such as Ranked Choice voting, that are better at promoting variety and more than two candidates per office. Remember that we are where we are because First Past the Post voting encourages consolidating power into two opposing parties that fight viciously over said power.

Ranked Choice voting allows you to pick multiple candidates and rank them in order of your preference, and if your first choice doesn't get enough votes to win, your vote counts for your second choice, and so on until there is a clear winner. It reduces the need for candidates to seek backing by a huge, rich, mediocre-or-worse party, heavily compromising their goals and their platform along the way, just to gain traction and get their name out. Having more viable candidates makes it necessary for those candidates to show their worth against several others instead of just being "not as bad as THAT guy". That means the Ranked Choice voting is one way we might be able to get out of the downward spiral we've seen in US partisan politics over the last decade.

There are hardly any female werewolves because they break all the classic rules of femininity. They force you to confront female violence, strength, size, grotesqueness and uncontrollability. I know this is maybe not the point of the post, but this reminded me of this beautiful poem called When My Wife Is A Werewolf by Rosamund Taylor which I really adore so I thought I would share it.

a few months ago my friend called me and told me she was moving back up near me from 7 hours south in the middle of nowhere and asked if i would help her because she couldn’t move the furniture by herself and the town was so small there was no moving company (there were actually only 5 or six businesses in the whole town including both restaurants) and she had no one else down there to ask. 

And even though money is pretty tight for her, she told me I could name my price if I would help her, because it was so far away.

I told her she was a dummy for thinking i would take her money but that i would accept the traditional helping-a-friend-move price: a meal (i know she would feel wrong about herself if she didn’t do something for me in return, that’s just how she is) Tradition suggests pizza and beer, we opted for enchiladas and a margarita.

we crashed on the floor of the empty place and left back north in the morning - when we got back to the city three more friends met us at her storage place (the place she was moving into wouldn’t be vacant for a couple months) and we started to move all her stuff up to a storage room on the THIRD FLOOR (because large city storage places be like that)

we had just taken the first box out of the truck when the (only) lady working there walked by and told us they closed in an hour and twenty minutes, and she couldn’t stay even a little late because she had to get to her other job.

One hour twenty minutes. To completely un-jenga a large uhaul and re-tetris it back into a similar sized room on the third floor.

We all just, shared a look, took off hoodies, and got the fuck down to business. 

It was actually.. I still cherish look we passed around. The tiny eyebrow quirks and chin nods. The eye glints. The bigger breath we each took as we prepared to kick it up several gears. That moment of wordless connection, when we all just silently agreed that we were damn well going to do the impossible and didn’t even waste the time it would take to say anything, just got to it.

And we did it too. Finished with exactly two full minutes to spare. And then we all went for dinner and drinks to celebrate. And my friend’s friends that came to help? Two of them were acquaintances/friends of mine already. Like I lived with one for a year a decade ago sort of thing. But this experience? Brought us all closer. Made myself a new friend too.

And the friend i helped move? She and I are closer than ever because of it.

When i left our storage success diner to go home, she asked me again if I was sure i wouldn’t take any money.

I said “I ever tell you when I was 22 I went down to Hollywood to try that scene out? Anyway ten months later, when I just couldn’t do it anymore, and needed to come back, I called one of my best friends and said i can’t do this anymore i need to come back. You know what he said? He said: I’ll be there tomorrow. Not how much will you pay me, not what do i get out of it, not will you be able to cover my gas, just: I’ll be there tomorrow. Okay? You’re my friend. If you need help, I’m going to be there”

If helping someone move ruins your friendship, you’re doing at least one of those two things very wrong.

As someone closing in on 40, I understand the "don't insist your friends help you move". I have two huge, heavy, antique wardrobes that are absolute beasts to maneuver into apartments, especially with stairs involved. When I next move, I'm absolutely hiring movers especially for those, because I will not inflict them on my friends ever again.

That said, I'm also the friend who genuinely wants to help you move! I have a pretty strong and sturdy body, and I love having opportunities to leverage it (sometimes quite literally) to the advantage of my friends and family. I also have pretty decent brain for the visual-spatial stuff, so maneuvering furniture and loading a van come pretty easily to me.

When my sister moved out of state not to long ago, I offered to help her with that, too. She had movers to wrap, load, and drive her stuff, but having the moral support — an additional familiar brain to help manage questions from the movers, back her up in case they wanted to cut a corner or do something in a way that didn't sit well with her, even just make the experience less foreign and lonely — seemed to make it an easier time for her, and cost me nothing but a little time.

In my experience, it's always been poor communication and/or poor planning that makes moving into an ordeal that hurts relationships. Discussing boundaries and doing advance planning where possible helps us avoid the sort of issues where "helping move ruins friendships".

So yes, hire movers if it makes you feel good about the situation or better meets your needs. But know that there's nothing wrong with asking for or accepting help from your friends. Most of the time, people are more willing to help than we think, and if we discuss boundaries and expectations advance, it *can* be a good experience for everyone.

I love seeing dogs and wolves in movies because they’re acting so vicious but also their tails are wagging so hard unless the post-processing guys specifically edited out the tails (which is slightly less obvious but also hilarious in a different way once you spot it).

This is why I love the dog in the original casting of The Thing so damn much. I have never seen an acting dog move with such a deliberate, calm intent. It was like every single motion and gesture this animal made was intentional.

Apparently, according to the behind-the-scenes documentation, this dog was just fuckin like that. Almost never, if at all, looked at the camera crews and production teams. Never excitedly wagged his tail on set no matter how much of a good boy he was being. If he did, it was the same… deliberate motions.

His name was Jed, and even though he’s a dog, he deserves an oscar. He was an exceptionally good boy.

Maybe it was simple logic dictating that it had to be first because it was the one thing that was not in any way wrapping around anything else.
