someone with a bad cold/allergies sitting at a desk studying or working with a pen in one hand and a crumpled handkerchief in the other to catch sneezes that are coming just infrequently enough as not to warrant stopping what they're doing but plenty frequently to be a distracting pain in the ass
I don't feel embarrassed about it but it's definitely a new thing! Maybe because I never really had someone to take care of me before? I mean, like, outside of family, eugh.
Now I relish the thought of being a sneezy mess because it means getting to fluster/arouse my partner~
j/ayce strikes me as the type to make those stuffy groans or sounds, '--guh!...." or something of that nature after sneezes, especially particularly harsh ones. Scrubs his nose and makes another moaned sound of discomfort or itchiness. He's just...naturally expressive...and vocal...y'know....😶🌫️
V/ik is still feeling pretty poorly and J/ayce is... holding up about as well as tissue paper in a storm. Poor guy. Such a shame its only gonna get worse in part 3 hehehe.
Fic under the cut!
Viktor woke slowly, pulled from sleep by a roughed muffled sound.
For a moment, he stayed still, his sluggish brain flickering to life. Through the cracks in his eyelids he could see the first hints of morning light seeping through the curtains. Jauce’s lingering warmth was stll beside him but-
There it was again. Was that…coughing? The sound came again, wet and strained. Viktor shifted in their bed, cracking an eye open.
Jayce had turned away from him, his wide shoulders hunched, blanket pushed down to his lap as he desperately tried to stifle the sound into his fist. His whole body was jerking with the effort, shoulder blades drawn in to himself.
Viktor was about to sit up and pat him through it when Jayce finally sucked in a shallow, shuddering breath. He simply sat and breathed for a moment before slumping back against the pillows, chest rising and falling unsteadily. He turned his head and-
Their eyes met.
“Fuck, Vik,” Jayce groaned, his voice raspy, “Did I wake you?”
Jayce looked exhausted, his features puffy and hair frumpled- shadows under his eyes that hadn’t been there yesterday.
“You do dnot sound good,” Viktor murmured, shifting upwards to get closer to Jayce.
“I’m fine, just choked on some water,” he sighed, eyes swimming with guilt, “I’m sorry I woke you, I tried to be quiet.”
“Don’t be silly,” Viktor said, resting his head against Jayce’s shoulder.
“Your fever seems to be gone.”
“Hmm”
Jayce’s hand raised to run soothing trails through his hair, “That’s good, how do you feel.”
“Just tired an—hhhHH...” the itch that had lay dormant over night suddenly scrambled to the surface, “And i–HH…’IT’sSCHuhhh! Itchy snuff.”
He’d barely bothered to cover the sneeze, just twisting to the side and letting it mist the air.
Jayce was looking at him, gaze full of that same relentless concern.
“Stop fussing.”Viktor said, scrubbing at his running nose.
“Not possible. And bless you.”
Jayce began to rise from the bed, “I’m gonna take a shower then head off to the lab.”
Viktor frowned, Jayce really did look knackered and it wasn’t fair to expect him to do the work for both of them. But Jayce was already shuffling off to the bathroom before he could protest.
Viktor curled back down into the blankets, though his fever was gone, his head felt heavy with congestion, exhaustion hanging behind his eyes. And his nose was constantly oscillating between being completely stuffed up and running like a tap.
The shower flickered on. Then he heard it.
A strange, stuttering sound. Soft, hitched gasps.
Viktor pushed himself up slightly, listening harder. Barely-there sounds, just audible over the torrent of the shower water. Jayce’s breath caught, a clipped, shaky silence then-
Nothing. No release. What was he?...
With an effort, Viktor sat up properly, rubbing at his temples. He thought about calling out, but just as he opened his mouth-
His own breath snagged, teeth bearing in a snarl. He floundered for a tissue, clutching the duvet up to his face when he wasn’t able to make it in time.
“HEEh’ntSCHhh! Hh’KTSchh’uhh— snff...”
They were low and dribbling, mess spreading across the covers. Ugh, they’d have to wash these.
He kept the blanket up to his face, a tear sipping from his eye as his breath continued to hitch slightly. But, with an irritated grumble, he exhaled shakily, dropping the snotty covers back to his lap.
The bedroom door creaked open, wrapped in a towel, Jayce walked in, last nights t-shirt ruffling his damp hair. Suddenly his steps halted, his hands freezing in his hair. His shoulders tensed, as if bracing for something. Then he jolted forward, the movement sharp.
A barely-there, almost-silent stifle, hidden in the movement of drying his hair.
With a water-logged sniffle, Jayce straightened up, pressing a fist against his nose.
“Jayce are.. you-HHH.” shit not again.
Viktor snapped forward in a barrage of sneezes he hadn’t quite satisfied before, not bothering to cover as he dipped forward again and again in a fittish volley. His body shook with the effort, breath stuttering through the congestion as he tried to get a hold of himself.
And then Jayce was there.
“Shit, Vik—”
A warm, steady hand rubbed gentle circles against his back as the itchy, almost useless expulsions rattled through him.
“H’itsch…HI-iihh… K’tsh..T’shh.!”
Finally, mercifully, the fit ended. Viktor blew blearily into the stack of tissues raised to his face, realising a moment too late that it was Jayce holding them there and not him.
“You’re so sick, baby.” muttered Jayce, kissing softly against his temple as Viktor continued to try and clear the gunk out of his face.
“I’m…okay.” Viktor croaked. But the energy had been sucked out of him, leaving him blanched and feeble to the drag of sleep.
“Go back to sleep, V. I’ll be at the lab. Text me if you need anything, okay?”
“Okay…” he murmured, voice shrouded with sleep.
He could just about sense the shift in weight as Jayce rose and slipped quietly from the room before the darkness of slumber pulled him under.
~.~
Viktor sniffled, too tired to bother blowing his nose again. He flipped the page of his book, though his attention wasn’t really with it.
It was late.
Not too late but still, Jayce should’ve been back by now. Especially since he’d already sounded worse for wear this morning.
Viktor reached for his phone, reading the message he’d sent him earlier. Just a simple Don’t be too late.
Jayce had responded a few minutes later. Need something? :)
Viktor had hesitated before typing back- Just miss you.
That had been an hour ago.
Viktor sighed, the mess dribbling down his face too heavy to snort back any more. He rubbed at his nose with a crumpled tissue before giving a few wet, congested blows. He was feeling marginally better, or at least not feverish, but the congestion milling through his features was still miserable. His head was stuffed thick with it, the flesh of his nose tender from fumbling at it all day.
Should he text Jayce again?
Then he heard the telltale sound of a key against the lock, Jayce’s trudging footsteps down the hall.
The door creaked open. Jayce pushed into the room, shadowy in the dim light. Damn, he looked even more exhausted. The shadows under his eyes had grown in to dark smudges, his broad shoulders sagged as if his whole frame was weighed down.
But the moment his eyes locked with Viktor, his face softened, crows feet crinkling at the corners of his tired eyes.
“Hey,” he said softly.
“Hey.”
Jayce shuffled across the room, climbing onto the the bed with a groan before settling beside him.
Jayce’s head dropped onto Viktor’s chest, heavy and warm.
“You look a bit better,” Jaye mumbled, wrapping an arm around Viktor’s frame.
Viktor huffed, running a lazy hand down his back. “And you look awful.”
“Jusdst tired,” he muttered, voice strangely low and rough sounding, like it was caught at the back of his throat.
Oh he was tired all right. His breath was already starting to slow, the weight of him pressing heavier against Viktor’s chest.
He was still dressed in his work clothes, his ridiculous knee high boots still laced up.
“Jayce, baby,” he murmured, brushing his fingers through his hair, “you’ll sleep better if you get out of these clothes.”
Jayce grumbled sleepily but- after a moment- forced himself up, head hanging heavily. Eyes half closed, he clumsily pulled off his clothes, yanked loose his boots and shrugged into a pair of soft flannel pyjamas.
He was just shifting the pants up when his breath snagged suddenly, fingers on the waistband clenching in anticipation.
His face screwed up, nostrils flaring as he was absorbed into the sensation.
With a final, flaring breath he twisted to the side and pitched downwards with a-
“HHe’’eHH’rsheuhh…H’AHHH’KSchh…H’UHT’chuhh!!”
His whole body convulsed as they shook through him, the mess released misting across the air, droplets illuminated by the lamplight.
“Ugh, sorry. That was..” Jayce groaned, hand cupping his nose as he straightened up.
“Bless you,” Viktor murmured, shifting the tissue box towards him.
Jayce snatched a few and blew miserably- the sound longer and more crackling than he had anticipated.
Viktor frowned, reaching for him instinctively. He really didn’t sound good. Had he been like this all day? Working away in this state while he was tucked up in bed?
Jayce all but collapsed into his opened arms, utterly boneless. It was almost comical, the way he seemed to melt into him. Well, it would be if it wasn’t so concerning how out of it he was.
His partner sniffled against his chest, breaths coming in slow and congested through his parted lips.
“Do you feel okay?” he croaked quietly.
“Yes Jayce, I feel better today.”
“That’s–Huhhh.. Huhhh sorry I have– to–Huh-H’ehhhgntx!” Jayce shook with the force of the stifle, forceful and wet against the bare skin of his chest, “That’s snddf good.”
Viktor sighed, it was clear just how much congestion was flooding Jayce’s features, only made worse by him stifling. Sooner or later it would all come flooding out.
He fumbled for a tissue and wrapped it around Jayce’s nose.
“Blow for me.”
Jayce froze momentarily, but then the exhaustion seemed to win and he relented, thick mess filling the soon-useless fabric.
Viktor tossed the sodden thing aside and sighed. They’d have to talk about what they were going to do about the project due in just 2 days now. Neither of them were really in any fit state to work on it. But as Jayce’s weight went completely slack against him he knew that conversation would have to wait until the morning.
He sighed, carding through the locks of Jayce's hair again.
Jayce was definitely coming down with something. And by the looks of it, it was hitting him hard.
But that was tomorrow's problem. For now, Viktor just let him rest, holding him tight as he drifted off himself.
"Is it a kink or a fetish?" a secret third thing where if somebody even just says 'I need a tissue' in the right voice around me all the blood rushes to my head and I pass out immediately
for your post about suggesting prompts....if you want to skip this one, then by all means, the choice is yours 🫡.....but....if you wrote anything about j/ayce and vik/tor attempting to take care of/comfort each other while both being very ill with the same monster of a cold....that would be pretty epic 👉👈
I'll handle it- part 1/?
Thank you anon for this DELIGHTFUL prompt. Here is part one of the fic, the rest is halfway done but I thought I might as well post the first bit for now.
BTW- the other requests are on the way, thanks to everyone who sent in ideas, they're all delicious.
“hh’’ihh’kshieww…hUh’estchiew.!!” Viktor gasped out, nose pressed firmly against the back of his hand. His head swam with the congestion they’d brought on, an icy shiver snaking its way up his back.
He looked up. Jayce was watching him- eyes wide and tender, safety goggles pushed back on his head.
“Vik…”
“I’m fine Jayce, I told you, it’s just a cold. It’ll pass soon enough.”
Jayce’s eyebrows drew closer, “You sound awful.”
“It sounds worse than it is.”
“You look awful then.”
“Nothing out of the ordinary there.”
Jayce groaned, swivelling his chair closer, “Vik.”
“What?”
Jayce’s hand had reached under the desk, squeezing at his lower thigh, eyes staring imploringly into his. “Take a rest, just for a couple days.”
Viktor snorted, though the action made the congestion shoot up his nostrils, pricking against the most sensitive spots like pine needles.
“I do–Huhhh, don’t n-need…”
“Sneeze and then finish what you were gonna say.”
Viktor shot him a glaring look before his eyes glazed over, consumed by the itch seering in his nose and dipped into his arm with a-
“H’uu’HHH’tchoo…H’hetgnx!”
The hand on his thigh squeezed tighter, thumb running up and down.
“Bless you, babe.”
Viktor sniffled thickly, the moisture clagging his nose threatening to spill out. He rummaged in his jacket, desperately looking for something to wipe away the mess in time. Too late. He could sense it dribbling out of one side and he hurriedly raised a hand to cover it.
“Do you have-”
“Here.”
A soft handkerchief was placed in his free hand and he hastily pressed it to his face. He blew softly but thick bubbles of the stuff came out anyway. God he was a mess.
Jayce had leaned even closer, now looping an arm across his back, lips trailing tender pathways across the bare skin of his neck. His breath was warm against his chilly skin and it sent a ripple shuddering down his spine.
“We’ve got time,” Jayce said, voice close to his ear, “The lab will be waiting.”
Viktor sighed, heavy and weary, filled with the exhaustion flooding his body.
“Alright.” he breathed out quietly.
~.~
Viktor groaned, shifting in their bed, desperately trying to get comfortable. It had been two days since Jayce had dragged his ass back from the lab and he still felt terrible.
The congestion had thickened and settled into his features, making his coughs rattle and his sneezes shoot out heavy and drenching.
This morning, if possible, he felt even worse. What the hell had he managed to catch?
Bundled in the covers, he felt the tickle that seemed to be ever present flare up in his nose. He felt his chest seize up, face scrunching in anticipation. It demanded release. Viktor barely had time to fumble blindly for a tissue before he was surging forward with a-
“HeH’hh’ISHh’uhh! Hh’ihh’TSCHh-uhh!”
They thoroughly soaked the tissue, but Viktor was too tired to grasp for another. So, groaning, he folded the mess over and pressed the tissue to his nose, giving it a weary blow.
He was so out of it, he barely registered the sound of the bathroom door swinging open down the hall.
Then suddenly, there was a sinking of the mattress, a warm comforting mass at his side. Jayce’s arm looped across his chest, pulling him in to his arms, still a little damp from his shower.
“Hey.”
Viktor exhaled into the warmth of his forearm, “Hey.”
He noted the smell of soap and steam still clinging to Jayce as he breathed into the strong, grounding arms wrapped around him.
Jayce pulled back slightly, worried eyes searching his face. “You don’t look well, V.”
Viktor sighed, hand coming up to rub at his eyes, “I feel like crap.” His voice was scratchy and painfully congested, the constants slurring together. “I want to get back into the lab…the deadline is only two days away.”
Jayce squeezed him tighter, pressing his lips to the sweaty strands of his hair, “Don’t even worry about that,” he mumbled gently, “I’ll handle all of it. You just focus on getting better.”
“Bud-”
“Nope.” Jayce cut him off before he could argue. “I mean it, Vik, you need to rest.”
Viktor shifted, turning to face him, a strange mixture of guilt and relief swarmed through him. But Jayce was looking at him so tenderly, the wide pools of his amber eyes swimming with care.
Jayce leaned in, kissing against his damp forehead.
“Get some sleep, love.”
As Jayce stood, he grabbed another box of tissues from the shelf and dropped them on to the bedside table, passing a few to Vik in the process.
“Thagk you.” he leant in to blow miserably, not missing the way Jayce’s face contorted with worry at the sound.
“Send me a message if you need anything okay?”
Viktor nodded, tossing his soiled tissue to the side.
He took in Jayce’s face for a moment, the lines of tiredness hanging out his features. Had he slept okay? He hadn’t kept him up with his snuffling and sneezing had he? He was about to ask as much when, with a little wave, Jayce slipped from the room.
~.~
The day blended into evening in a fog of congestion and exhaustion.
Viktor had spent most of it curled up in bed, swiping at his endlessly running nose with tissues, alternating between being too hot and shivering under the blanket. His head felt thick, his sinuses completely clogged as if sticky molasses ran through them. His throat hurt from sneezing and sneezing and sneezing.
He felt miserable. He wanted nothing more than to sink into the warmth of Jayce’s broad chest.
Finally, the sounds of a door unlocking down the hall. He perked up slightly, Jayce was back.
The door cracked open; Jayce slipped inside with a wide but tired smile.
Hey,” Viktor murmured, his voice like crackling tar, pushing himself up on his elbows.
Jayce flopped onto the bed beside him with a quiet groan. His hair was a little mussed, his shirt rumpled and he smelt of a long day in the lab. As he turned to face toward Viktor, he let out a long yawn, jaw popping.
“Hey, V,” he mumbled, rubbing his eyes. “How you feelin’?”
Viktor sniffled, the sound wet and productive, he opened his mouth to speak but realised he couldn’t until he’d at least cleared some of the gunk from his sinuses.
He fumbled for a tissue from the much depleted box, giving his chapped nose a good, honking blow.
“Gross, mbainly.” he finally croaked out.
The same itch that had been triggering his senses all day reared up once more. It was like his nerves were exposed and this virus was swinging back and pressing against the most sensitive spot.
“H’’EHUPCHuhhh….H’EH’Tschuuhh!--snddff…” They were louder and wetter than he’d ever known himself to sneeze before, rocking him forward with the sheer force of them.
He’d just barely managed to raise the tissue he’d already soaked before and he kept his face held to it for a moment, cheeks warming. He hated sneezing in front of people, even Jayce. He must sound absolutely disgusting.
But Jayce wasn’t deterred, he reached out a hand to squeeze his shoulder, shifting to get up.
“Bless you, V. I’ll make you some tea and something to eat.”
Vitkro frowned at him. Jayce looked wrecked, dark circles under his eyes, shoulders slumped with exhaustion. He’d already been doing work for the two of them all day in the lab and now he was going to take care of him?
“Jayce, you dod’t–” he started.
But Jayce cut him off, “Vik,” he said firmly, rising from the bed, “Let me do this.”
Viktor sighed wearily, nodding his acquiescence.
Half an hour later, Jayce was back, wobbling through the door with a bowl of soup and a steaming mug of tea. He placed both on the side before slumping back onto the bed beside him.
“Thagk you, babe.” Viktor said softly, reaching over to sip from the tea. The warmth eased the rawness in his throat, shifting some of the mess clogging his sinuses.
“How’s the project?” he asked, glancing at Jayce over the rim of the mug.
Jayce shot him a tired smile. “Should be ready in time I think,” he assured him. He let out yet another yawn, rubbing at his face tiredly.
Fuck he felt awful. Jayce was this tired because of him. Because this measly cold had knocked him into bed for days.
Despite the tea he just couldn't get warm. He felt a full body shiver rattle through him, the mug shaking in his hands.
Jayce immediately took notice, sitting up, eyes searching his face. “V, I think you’re running a fever.”
Viktor exhaled a stuffy sigh, closing his eyes. “Yeh… feels like it.
Jayce frowned, strong forearms making to get up again. “Gimme a sec.”
The exhaustion hanging off of Jayce was tangible now, it was clear he wanted nothing more than to curl up under the blankets with him and yet here he was, pushing himself up wearily
Viktor weakly grabbed for his sleeve. “Jayce, you—”
“Shhh,” Jayce hushed him, prying himself free with gentle hands. “Just stay put.”
A moment later, he returned with a bottle of medicine, placing two tablets in Viktor’s palm, watching as he swallowed them down. His fingers brushed against Viktor’s forehead, and the concern in his face deepened. “Shit, Vik, you’re seriously burning up.”
“Its—hhuuuhh…”
Fuck, it was back again.
Through the consuming sensation, eyes squeezed closed he shakily placed the mug aside. His breath surged in and out as he gasped, hitched, sniffled through the dramatic build up. He was gonna….he was gonna…
“H’uhh’itchuh! ..HH’’ESTCHieww!....hhu-UHHH.”
“Bless you, bless you. Oh, you’re not done.”
“H’’ATSch’uHH!”
Jayce reached over, pressing another stack of tissues in his hand, taking away the used, crumbled ones without a care for the germs coating them.
“Bless you, Vik.”
Viktor mumbled something unintelligible, utterly worn out from the fever racing through him and those drenching sneezes. He sank further into the bed.
Finally, finally, Jayce let himself collapse beside him, tucking himself close, his hand resting lightly against Viktor’s back.
“Rest for a minute,” he murmured, “but then could you try and eat some soup for me?”
Viktor hummed his confirmation sleepily, pressing his face into Jayce’s shoulder. This is what he’d missed, this is what he’d been craving. And despite the monstrous cold ravaging his system, he felt content.
An "I hate sneezing" character that stifles because of it, which only results in prolonging their fits is always such a treat. Like yes girl, hold those sneezes in, only making the fit more drawn out and miserably desperate and wet!

Day 24 “Don’t you think you should stay home today?”
Day 28 “Well, it sounds to me like you need a little bit of TLC.”
~~~~
Three days later.
“I'm back.” Jayce called as he shut his door with his foot. “I fed Rio, got your clothes, and all the crap you asked for.” He set the stack of books on the table. “You better still be in bed like you promised.”
The shuffling from the study room answered his answer.
Sighing heavily, Jayce pushed the partial closed door open. Viktor sat at the desk, the food Jayce left, only half eaten. ”Good you're finally back. Here, look at this.” Without looking, he held out a diagram.
“I thought we had a deal?” Jayce said, taking the paper. “And what am I looking at?”
Before Viktor could reply, he coughed harshly into his arm. “Look at the equations...” He managed.
Jayce eyed Viktor, “Eat and I'll read.” He motioned to the food.
Viktor made a noise but didn't argue as he picked again at the sandwich. “There's more books at the library I want to look through once I finish this.” He made a sweeping gesture with his hand over his papers, “We should head down there.”
Jayce was glad Viktor couldn't see his massive eye roll, “Don't you think you should stay here today? I mean that's one of the main reasons I ran to your place. Your bronchitis won't get any better if you don't rest, V.”
Two days ago, Jayce finally managed to get Viktor seen by a doctor given how terrible his fever had been. Neither were that shocked when he was diagnosed with bronchitis and Jayce assured the doctor he'd take of Viktor, much to his partner's annoyance.
Sighing, Viktor rubbed his face which still was far too pale for Jayce's liking. “I suppose it can wait.” He muttered then pushed the plate away. “I'd hoped to find a better formula, something we can show Heimerdinger that this is safe.” He laid his head on the desk, hair falling onto the piles of papers.
Jayce set the diagram down then put his hand on Viktor's shoulder, “We will. But nothing good will come if you work yourself like this. The doctor told you to rest.”
Viktor's shoulders moved as he chuckled, “You know how difficult that is for me.” He said then sat up, putting his palms on his back and stretching.
“I'll look over the formula later. Right now, let's take a break.” Jayce grabbed the cane by putting it next to the chair.
Viktor looked at it quickly then sighed, grabbing it to push himself up. “That chair was hurting my back anyways.” He coughed as they exited the room.
“Oh I grabbed that pillow you use to sleep.” Jayce waited until Viktor was sitting on the bed before heading back out to the kitchen to grab it and the clothes. Reappearing, he tossed it at Viktor who looked confused.
“What?” Jayce said putting the clothes next to the nightstand.
Viktor's head remained down as he shifted the pillow behind his back. “I...I didn't think you'd remember.” He said quietly, then turned to cough.
Jayce sat on the bed next to him. “Why would you say that?”
Viktor only shrugged before rubbing his head again.
“Does it hurt?” Jayce asked, his hand hesitantly reaching out for Viktor's knee.
“Mm a bit, yes.” He said then glanced over at Jayce. “Can I...” Jayce saw Viktor's face flush red.
Smiling, he positioned himself closer, “Of course, you cold?” He asked as Viktor lay his head on Jayce's chest.
“Yeah.” Viktor replied quietly. A bit of silence passed between them as he cuddled against Jayce's warm body. “Have you thought about it at all?”
****
“Can we be partner's again?”
Jayce looked at Viktor, completely shocked, “W-What?” He stood up and ran a hand over his face. “Are you serious? V, I mean, you are, I wasn't, I mean...” Jayce started pacing, “V...you're sick. You have a fever, now isn't...” His heart beat against his chest. He couldn't even look in Viktor's general direction, but he felt those amber eyes on him.
“Jayce...”
“Just...wait V, okay please?” He finally looked at Viktor who's reaction he couldn't quite read. “I need to think first...”
In the sitting area Jayce continued to pace, drag his hand over his face and gesture widely as he weighed the pros and cons of Viktor's request. Also was he even being serious? Viktor's fever was bad, this might be a reflection of that. Tomorrow he might not even remember. Jayce stopped in his tracks. Somehow that made his chest hurt even worse. Was this all a fever induced declaration? Viktor had been done with him, with them, their dream. Had all that really changed? Three months of radio silence, his former partner shows up at his door after a break through that should have him win the Young Innovators Convention single handedly only to be told he could be expelled because of it. Three months of trying every day not to think about what he'd lost that day.
Jayce sat down, head in his hands. It was then he heard at clack of Viktor's cane coming closer.
“My apologies, Jayce. That was...wrong of me.” The pain in Viktor's voice wasn't something Jayce could ignore. “If you want...I can head back to my...”
“No! No!” Jayce jumped back up startling Viktor who took a step back. “I don't want you going back out. Stay please, V. I'm just...confused right now.” He placed both hands on Viktor's shoulders, “Don't leave, you're sick, once you're well then we can talk okay?”
****
Jayce exhaled, “Yeah, I have. When you've been asleep mostly.” He closed his eyes. “You told me once you believed in my work. You were the only person who believed it for a long time. That first year was...everything.” He felt Viktor clench so he squeezed his arm. “Sorry.”
“No it's fine, please continue.”
“Viktor...” Jayce leaned back, opening his eyes to stare up at the ceiling. “Next to my parents, you're the only person I ever loved. Watching you walk out of the lab that day...” All those memories came flooding back. As if he knew, Jayce felt Viktor hold him tighter. “I went on hiatus, I zoned out for weeks, I...made some mistakes...” Jayce signed, wiping away a tear.
“I never thought you would appear at my door again. But here you are, and it's been...” A small laugh escaped him, “Nice. I mean, not you being sick and feverish and...well, you get it.” He felt himself blush with embarrassment. “But you being here feels like the beginning. When we just had dreams and nothing else.”
Viktor slowly sat up, grimacing as he positioned himself next to Jayce. “I can't promise that it will always feel like this. But being with you these past days has made me remember how it was, too. And I missed that.” He leaned his head on Jayce's shoulder. “When I walked out of the Academy, my first inclination wasn't to go home. It was to come here. I knew you'd understand even though we hadn't....spoken...” Viktor pivoted away to cough.
“It's probably time for your medicine again.” Jayce went to get up but Viktor pressed a thin hand on his chest.
“I'm sorry Jayce, for everything I said that last time. You were right, I...was....jealous.” Another cough burst out of him. Viktor pulled himself inward away from Jayce as he coughed into the sweatshirt.
“V...” Jayce started when the fit had passed. “Lay down, I'll get the medicine and some water, okay. We can talk later.”
Viktor nodded, closing his eyes, as Jayce covered him with the blanket.
An hour later, Jayce once again lay on the bed, Viktor cuddled against him as he slept. The sound of Viktor's raspy breathing brought him an odd sense of comfort.
Can we be partners again?
Jayce chuckled to himself. Truthfully he'd known the answer immediately but his brain had tried every way possible to talk his heart out of it.
Of course they could.
Viktor clenched a bit in his sleep. Jayce felt his forehead and he seemed warmer which the doctor said might happen at night. It was past 8pm by now.
As Jayce debated on waking Viktor, his partners cough broke out, causing Viktor to sit up as he hacked away. Immediately, Jayce grabbed the water glass and rubbed circles on his back.
“Ow.” Viktor replied tiredly after he drank the water.
“Maybe sitting up would be better for you? I can adjust your back pillow, too.” Jayce offered.
“That would be nice.” Viktor's voice was barely over a whisper. Now able to lean back more comfortably, he swallowed medicine for the fever. “Can you hand me that blanket?”
“Sure, partner.” Jayce said, smiling at him. Viktor's pale face flushed pink momentarily as he locked eyes with Jayce.
“Really?” He'd forgotten all about the blanket, so Jayce wrapped it around his shoulders.
“Yeah, really.” Jayce cupped Viktor's face, kissing his cheek. “But no work until you're better okay? You just need a bit more TLC and you'll be fine.”
Viktor swallowed, grabbing Jayce's arm he pulled him closer, touching his forehead to his partners.
The shifting of colors, flashes of light, the weight of it all. Weight increasing with every redo, every rune, every try. It's becoming far too much.
The grass is soft under his body, well the parts that can feel. The ethereal mix of sun, sky, clouds, and stars welcome him back. As does Jayce, forever held in that position.
Viktor lies longer than normal as the exhaustion hasn't passed yet. Eyes closing, for a moment feels a touch on his back, a hand, a comfort. Something he hasn't felt in many many years but will never ever forget how it felt.
Get up, V. It's not good to sleep here...
That voice. Soft, concerned.
His voice.
Viktor hears it as clear as day even if deep down he knowns it's only a figment. His Jayce hasn't spoken in...well...time never stops does it?
Gripping his staff, Viktor manages himself to his knees, ignoring the stars as they spin momentarily. Pulling his hood down, hoping it's only the bright sun making him feel dizziness. That's a lie, they both know it. Slowly, delicately, he stands, one hand on his staff, the other on Jayce's shoulder.
"Thank you." He whispers as he straighens, but upon taking a step, his balance falters. Hand immediately clasped around the staff. "I'm fine." Viktor answers the air.
Sadly, it is too much. Usually, there's some after effects. Even doing the dimensional teleportation magic so many times before (more times then he likes to count), something about this one lingers. His thin legs cannot seem to bear his weight so again on the lichen and moss he sits leaning against the crumbling husk of the man he loves. Whose touch he took for granted back when it was so readily available. Whose gentle hand calmed his introverted nerves and gave him solace in the most stressful situations. A touch he'd gladly burn the world over again to feel once more.
Now the sharp decaying shards of the husk stab into his cloak, but at least he's able to feel something. Pain is better than nothing. Pain is what he deserves.
The weather atop the ruined world is always pleasant. Viktor maintains that so Jayce will never be cold, never fear the snow or cold. Even when he's gone, searching timelines, watching others from afar, the sun always shines upon what it loves.
Now though, he feels the chill of the warm breeze harder. Pulling his cloak closer around, he clutches inward, legs tucked up near his chin.
Cold?
"Apparently yes." Viktor replies, setting his staff down so he can hug his knees.
His eyes flutter, the sweeping cold now engulfs him, causing his shoulders to shake. Curling into a ball, he lays next to Jayce, imagining it's his body against his back, warming him as they used to.
Sweat rolls down his brow, mixing with tears, Viktor doesn't realize leak from his eyes. Everything hurts. His long nails dig into the moss, taking a clump in his hand, and he grips it tightly.
Viktor is never sure when he sleeps or if he even does anymore. But he knows when he's dreaming. Not dreams as he once had when he was fully human. These feel more like he's suspended in time. Life continues around him while he remembers memories too painful to forget. This is when he hears Jayce the most. A cruel twist, the dreams never are visual, only whispers, a nudge, a hint. Viktor never sees Jayce's face, but even after all these lonely years, he can still picture it perfectly.
At times, he's observed other Jayce's from afar. Ones that died in the fall, ones that never made it out, ones that joined his other self. Keeping himself at a distance is self imposed, Viktor knows he isn't strong enough to resist if he gets too close.
"Will you ever forgive me, Jayce?" He murmurs, as he hides his fevered face beneath his hood. "Will this cycle I've initiated ever be broken?" A pain shoots across his chest. If it is ever broken, what if Jayce can't forgive him?
Viktor clutches his chest, clawing at the pain burning in his body. Why is pain the only emotion he's allowed to feel?
Ridiculous question. He knows the answer.
Time passes. Days pass. He lays unmoving, at times staring up at the stars, other times watching the flowers around him sway in the breeze.
During the worst, he feels a comforting hand on his forehead. It would bring peace if it didn't bring so much agony.
Viktor...
"Jayce..." Weary eyes open. The sun partially blocked by a passing cloud warms his skin. Viktor realizes he no longer feels the chill that has racked him for....however long he laid.
Slowly, cautiously, he pushes himself into a sitting position. Leaning his back against Jayce, Viktor sighes.
"Thank you for taking care of me."
I love the idea of Mage V hallucinating Jayce's voice.
Jayce having felt rough all day. Coughing, sniffling, reaching for his handkerchief far too many times for one evening. He had to make it through the day, stifling sneezes through an important fundraiser. With Viktor still out of commission with that awful flu going around, he has certainly been overworking himself.
By the end of the night, he feels terrible. Hair clinging to the damp skin of his burning face. In a feverish daze, he heads to the lab instead of home. Finding it closer, more of a comfort than being alone. The lingering presence of his partner in hastily scribbled equations and abandoned coffee mugs.
Jayce collapses into the cot they keep there for those long nights and necessary afternoon naps. Shoes kicked off and jacket a crumpled heap on the floor. He curls in on himself, shivering beneath the warm blue blanket he's cocooned in. His throat hurts. His body aches. His sinuses burn. He catches sneezes into the plush fabric, whimpering between fits.
"Viktor," he croaks out, tears on his lashes as he drifts into a restless sleep.
The morning comes with the creak of the door, Viktor entering the lab, glad to finally be rid of that abhorrent illness. He's simply glad Jayce managed to escape it despite visiting him so often. Only to realise his partner had not, in fact, been so lucky when he sees him bundled up on the cot. Trembling and whining his name softly.
"Impossible man," Viktor murmurs.
this was SO GOOD. ugh god Jayce baby. viktor you better take care of your man!! Thank you anon this was lovely!
so you asked for jayvik prompts.......idk if this is any good but...would you entertain a scenario of them sharing a cold...? 👉👈
just doin their best to take care of one another...maybe vik feeling a tad guilty for getting jayce sick (not entirely tho, he did warn jayce multiple times to keep his distance and yet, lo and behold, 🙄), and since it seems he's starting to recover, but jayce is now in the trenches of it so to speak...general fluff and things...idk. up to you! :D
Back to the inbox we go! I was gonna combine this with another prompt that's similar but decided against it I want to torture V separately, muahhaha. Also this one is a bit old so sorry it took so long, anon. Prof AU scenario.
"V?" Jayce croaked from the other side of the bed?
"Mmm?" Viktor barely had the energy to shift his head to look. Even the slightest movement rattled whatever was causing this cursed headache to remain pounding at his temples.
"Do you have any...." Jayce's breath hitched, Viktor felt his partner clench as he sneezed twice. "Tissues?" He finished as he rolled onto his back.
Viktor blinked, not that he could see well without his glasses on, but felt around his side until his hand rested on cardboard. "Here." He whispered, which made him cough.
"You're the best." Jayce replied, sitting up he tried blowing his nose, but it didn't help much. "Shit, I haven't felt his bad in a while."
"I did try to warn you." Viktor said, closing his eyes again as keeping them open required strength he did not possess.
Jayce shrugged in agreement as he rubbed tissues against his nose. "I know, you did." He sniffled hard. "But like I wasn't going to take care of you." Reaching over, he patted Viktor's hand with his. "Besides you were a lot worse."
"No need to remind me." Viktor gave Jayce's hand a squeeze. "Still there a bit." His other hand massaged the sides of his forehead.
"But you are feeling...better...right?" Jayce coughed into his arm as he spoke. He exhaled in relief when Viktor nodded.
"Good..." A sharp intake of air was followed by another congested sneeze.
Viktor managed one eye open, the blurry outline of Jayce sitting next to him, "Have you..." Gods even speaking wore him out, "Taken anything lately?"
"Yeah. What about you?" Jayce looked at his phone, "Should be time for your antibiotics." He groaned as he pushed himself off the bed.
He made it about half way to the door before he paused. Viktor watched Jayce bend forward, sneezing twice into his elbow.
"Jayce, come back to bed." Viktor hated how weak his voice sounded. "That can wait." Grimacing due to the pain knocking around in his head, Viktor propped himself up.
"No can do, babe. Doctor's orders were specific." He said as he exited the bedroom.
Sighing, Viktor managed to sit himself up, then used both hands to massage his aching head. The medicine quieted his cough however nothing seemed to bring relief for his head. Almost two straight days of pain so bad he felt as if his face would split open.
"Here." Jayce returned with a water bottle, a tissue box, and capsules.
Viktor nodded a thanks, then swallowed them as his partner got back into bed.
"You cold or...?" Jayce didn’t finish as he turned to cough.
"I'm fine, well except for this headache." Viktor said as he began to rub again.
Jayce frowned, "Lay down, I'll massage it."
"How’s that?" He asked after a minute, but all Viktor could do was moan in relief.
did i stay up until 4 AM to write this last night? yes. is it edited or incredibly well written? no.
but i wanted to post it since it's been a couple of weeks since writing part one, so without further ado here's 1.9k of j/ayce being absolutely miserable
CW for descriptions of mess. they're not super graphic, but it's definitely prevelant
Jayce decidedly makes his way towards Viktor’s office. After all, it’s become a routine, and he knows Viktor will begin to worry if he doesn’t show up. In his feverish daze, he doesn’t register the biting cold outside, but the breeze cuts through his jacket like it’s nothing more than a flimsy scrap of fabric. It’s beginning to snow, the first flakes drifting lazily through the crisp winter air. It’s beautiful, really, but Jayce remains oblivious to nature’s performance.
He’s too occupied with the task at hand: getting to Viktor’s office. His lungs ache with every breath, his hands moving to clutch his jacket tighter around his frame. Only a few minutes into his walk across campus, Jayce feels a trail of mess slip over his upper lip. He swipes his wrist across the base of his nose, cringing at how sore the reddened appendage has become.
Sore and terribly itchy. The pressure to his septum was just enough to ignite a buzzing through the bridge of his nose. With a huff of annoyance, Jayce moves to cup a hand over his nose, his breath hitching as he walks along the haphazardly icey pathway. After a few seconds, he stops in his tracks, barely hearing the grumbled annoyance of the students that almost collide with his back.
His breath is hitching in desperate, chest rattling breaths, every gasp more vocal than the last. He stumbles to move out of the pathway, keeping one hand steepled over his nose as he doubles over with a throat grating, “hHHH’RRSZXZCHh’HUew!”
Jayce only manages to take a single breath before a second sneeze follows, nearly toppling him over, “hhHd’egh…hh–hHDD’HZSSCHHuhw!” His vision blurs temporarily with the force of the second expulsion, but he somehow, miraculously, manages to stay standing. His palm is coated with mess, two strings of snot clinging from the base of his nose to his hand.
With a groan, Jayce straightens back up, pinching the strings of mess from his nose and flicking them to the side. He looks around, grateful that no one seems to have noticed the whole ordeal.
Jayce stands still for a moment, feeling the weight of his exhaustion sink deeper into his bones. The cold has left his body shaking, but it’s the fever that makes his limbs feel so incredibly heavy. He rubs his nose again, trying to wipe away the mess continuing to stream over his upper lip. He has little success, of course, the recent double having done nothing to stop the constant dripping of his nose.
As Jayce continues down the path, he catches a glimpse of his reflection in the glass of a nearby window, but it only makes him grimace. He’s a mess— his hair disheveled, his cheeks flushed from the fever, his nose red and raw. God he looks terrible.
Jayce forces himself to continue walking, stumbling along the icy path as his feet drag below him. The only thing keeping him going is the thought of being able to melt into the plush armchair in Viktor’s office, the one he’d bought purely for Jayce’s use.
The rest of the walk passes in a bleary haze, and before Jayce entirely registers it, he’s walking down the hall towards Viktor’s office. He vaguely registers the warmth of the hall, his numbed hands finally regaining some feeling. Just a few minutes left, he reassures himself.
Just as he turns a corner, though, his vision falters again, and a sudden shiver runs down his spine. His body stumbles forward, and instinctively, his hand shoots out to catch himself against the wall. The impact knocks the breath out of him, leaving him dizzy and disoriented.
Jayce had forgotten what it felt like to be truly, utterly sick. Admittedly, he shouldn’t have ignored his symptoms the past few days, but stubborn as he is, he tried pushing through it. And now he’s paying the price; this supposedly “little” cold is hitting him like a fucking truck.
"God…" he mutters, wiping a hand across his face– when had he started sweating? He shivers, his body shuddering despite the sudden feeling of a heat flash. His fingers brush his sore nose once more, and with another glance down the hallway, he starts moving again. He just needs to get to Viktor.
The door to Viktor’s office is in sight now, and Jayce feels a sense of relief wash over him. But with that relief comes another wave of dizziness. He stumbles forward again, but this time, he’s able to catch himself on the doorframe. The door creaks open slightly under his weight, and he’s met with a casually uttered, “Jayce? You’re early.”
Viktor doesn’t initially look up from his work, document in hand and glasses slipping down the bridge of his nose. When he doesn’t receive a reply, however, his attention is immediately turned to his partner.
“Oh, darling,” he murmurs, only needing a single glance at Jayce to know he’s miserably sick, “Come in, sit.”
Jayce does as instructed, his body moving as if it’s on autopilot and collapsing ungracefully into the plush armchair across from Viktor’s desk. With a swift motion, Viktor grabs his cane and crosses the room, standing over Jayce and placing a hand on his forehead.
“You have a fever,” Viktor tuts, moving to hold Jayce’s chin and tilting it upwards so Jayce is forced to meet his gaze.
Jayce looks up with glassy, hazy eyes, instinctively nuzzling his cheek against Viktor’s palm. Viktor can’t help but smile at the gentle affection, moving to brush his thumb over Jayce’s cheek.
“I thingk–” Jayce starts, but he’s forced to pause and clear his throat with a phlegmy cough, “I mighd be coming down with somethi’g.”
“You think?” Viktor repeats with a slight grin, shifting his stance to apply more weight to his right leg– the cold rarely bodes well with his bum leg, often worsening its instability and pain. Even in his feverish delirium, Jayce notices the movement, reaching out and placing a hand on Viktor’s hip wordlessly. He knows not to ask, not to push Viktor to talk about his pain unless he wants to.
“You are going to be the death of me,” Viktor murmurs fondly, “have you taken anything?”
“C’mbon V, id’s nod thad bad,” Jayce attempts to argue, ignoring Viktor’s question as to medication. Truthfully, he’d meant to take something this morning, just like how he’d meant to bring tissues to his lecture. Between his unbridled ADHD and his fever, it’s honestly a wonder he’s functioning at all– that is, if you can consider this to be functioning.
Viktor takes out his handkerchief, handing it out to his partner, “Blow your nose,” he instructs simply, but there’s a fondness to his voice– the kind reserved solely for Jayce; Viktor isn’t necessarily a natural caretaker, but Jayce is the exception. As frustrating as his partner can be, and trust that Jayce can be beyond infuriating at times, Viktor knows him through and through.
Jayce blushes, torn between denying the handkerchief and running the risk of his nose running incessantly or accepting the handkerchief and admitting how sick he is. Reluctantly, he accepts the handkerchief with a soft, “thangk you,” and turns away from Viktor as best he can. He barely manages to blow his nose, the action resulting in more of a congested snort than anything productive.
Before Jayce can try again, there’s a soft rapping at the door, accompanied by Mel’s voice, “Professor Viktor?”
Viktor looks up in slight surprise, having entirely forgotten about his meeting with Mel upon seeing Jayce’s sick state. Initially, he had planned for Jayce to arrive after his lecture, but since he’d arrived unexpectedly early, their schedules were clashing.
“Oh, Professor Talis,” Mel says in slight surprise as she enters, not having expected Jayce to be there too. Her eyes linger momentarily on the handkerchief held in his hand before flicking up to his reddened nose with a sympathetic expression.
Jayce offers her a tired smile and a brief wave. Usually he’d start a conversation; after all, he’s rather fond of Mel. They’ve grown close over the past few years of working as colleagues, and he considers her a friend. Luckily, Mel doesn’t take offense to his lack of conversation, instead turning to Viktor and asking, “Is this an okay time–”
Jayce interrupts Mel with a sudden, vocal hitch, “hhHH-” as a sudden itch buzzes through the back of his sinuses, pushing up to the tip of his nose. Despite his initial reservations about accepting Viktor’s handkerchief, he feels a rush of gratitude towards his partner for lending him the cloth. He steeples it over his nose just in time, pressing it against the lower part of his face in an attempt to muffle the encroaching sneeze.
“hhH’MPDDSXXHCHh’uh!”
“Gezhundiet,” Mel blesses with a look of surprise at the sheer force of the sneeze, “are you-,” she begins to ask, but she stops as Viktor shakes his head.
“He’s not done,” Viktor says simply, saving Mel from being interrupted again.
Sure enough, Jayce is once again clutching the handkerchief to his face, turning his back towards his fellow professors as his breath hitches.
It’s a painful watch, his breath catching every few seconds only to build into a desperate false start. After a few particularly vocal hitches, Jayce finally snaps forwards with a throat grating sneeze, “hhHRRRSZZXCGhh’hhugh!”
The expulsion is strong enough to force his knee to jerk upwards, causing the armchair to creak in protest.
“Bless you darling,” Viktor murmurs, frowning as Jayce’s shoulders remain slumped, the handkerchief held tightly around his nose. It’s evident that the kerchief is covering a mess of spray as Jayce snuffles, blushing crimson.
Viktor turns to Mel, offering her an apologetic smile, “My apologies Professor Merdada, but now is not the best time. Can I suggest that we reschedule?”
Mel smiles sympathetically, “Of course,” she heads towards the door without second thought, knowing Viktor’s priority is taking care of his partner, “and Professor Talis?”
Jayce looks up, hidden sheepishly behind the handkerchief.
“You should take the day off tomorrow. I’ll see to it that your students are informed,” she says curtly before leaving, giving him no opportunity to deny her– not that he would’ve, even he recognizes that he wouldn’t make it through working tomorrow.
Viktor gives Mel a thankful glance as she exits, knowing she saved him the trouble of convincing Jayce to take a day off. After all, it’s usually no easy feat convincing Jayce to partake in any sort of self care when he’s sick– and yet he criticizes Viktor for doing the same when he catches cold.
As soon as Mel’s gone, Jayce gives his nose a productive blow, finally having the privacy to mop up the aftermath of the double. Viktor waits patiently until Jayce lowers the handkerchief, his nose looking even sorer than before.
“We should go home,” Viktor prompts, his voice soft. He reaches up and brushes his thumb across Jayce’s cheek, “you have quite the fever.”
Jayce nods dumbly, feeling like dead weight. He’s too tired to argue, and admittedly, all he wants to do is go home and have Viktor dote over him.
“How is it you managed to go all day without telling me how terrible you felt?” Viktor chastises lightly as he begins packing up his things, “and you say I’m stubborn.”
that's all for now... eventually i'll (probably) write a part three, but with how little free time i have it will take a while. as always, any comments, tags, and reblogs are very much appreciated !!
in reference to the cottagecore life for j/ayce and vik/tor that's been going round on twt.........evilly begins to imagine both of them discovering having different individual allergies to some of the flora and fauna they now live surrounded by at all times....😇
