you were a part in all aspects of arthur’s life. you practically lived in his flat, you shared the same friends and usually if he was in a group video so were you. then it all vanished.

you broke up with him. claiming you needed space to work on yourself and that you just didn’t think you were right for him anymore, even after being together for three years, and then you moved back home.

he hadn’t saw you since. neither had your friends, that he knew of anyways. if they had they wouldn’t have told him anyways. he was a mess.

but now, a year later, you were back.

you fixed the babydoll top you were wearing, ensuring the dark lacy material was sitting correctly as you passed by the bouncer with a nervous smile on your face.

it was dark, the only things you could see were the sidemen branded things dotted across the large venue space. you recognised most faces around you, only making the pit in your stomach bigger.

it was finally time to face the music.

but first, you headed to the bar. you got the strongest drink you knew you still enjoy, moving your phone from the card machine just as a figure came beside you. you let out a sigh of relief at the familiar face.

“liv.”

you wrapped your arms around her, the woman instantly doing the same. you had stayed in touch, calls and texts, but you hadn’t physically saw her until she randomly showed up in your hometown a few months ago.

“you look good.” she commented as you gave her the same compliment back, pulling away to face her completely. she looked concerned, something she hadn’t not shown for you since she came to see you. “how are you feeling?”

you shrugged with a nervous laugh. “shitting myself.” you glanced around the room, pre drinks hitting as you tried to make out any faces in the dark room. “i don’t know if i can face him.”

“he’ll understand why.” liv comforts you, but you can only nod. you’d thought about this moment almost everyday since you’d left but you didn’t think it would actaully materialise.

“cmon, he’s not at our table right now.”

“look who’s here!” chris, already drunk, threw his arms around you as you approached the table with your friend by your side. “wow, you’ve lost like a ton of weight.” he comments, not realising how heavy his words were.

you just awkwardly chuckle, not missing the stares that were on you. your plan to look completely fine now vanishing between your fingers as you pull away from chris.

“it’s nice to see you, chris. have you got smaller?”

the joke seems to get the attention off you for the most part, allowing you to greet everyone before settling down around the small table. “so, how have you been?” george asks.

you hum, “trucking along.” you give a vague answer, sensing the group had already sniffed out that you hadn’t been fine the whole year you’d been gone despite how happy you seemed while texting them.

“are you back up here for good now?” arthur hill leans against you slightly as he speaks. the pint he had in his hand couldnt have been his first. you nod, “i actually don’t move in for another couple of days so I just got a hotel for up until then.”

“are you serious? you could’ve crashed at ours. we’re always happy to have you.” isaac leans in so you can hear him. your heart warms at the offer. you knew liv had probably told him a glimpse into how your life really was.

you could feel the dread in your stomach disappearing as you began to talk with your group of friends as if no time had passed. any assumptions you’d made were instantly proved false as they accepted you back in.

you knew you’d been horrible to arthur, leaving him like that, and you assumed they’d all take his side and shut you out but what you hadn’t thought - or realised - is that they knew you too well to know that you hadn’t done it for no reason.

you leave the bathroom, almost stumbling into someone who you apologised to before moving on. before you could make your way back to your friends, you ran into a familiar face as you weaved through the crowd.

arthur, your arthur. he was stood right infront of you with an expression you couldn’t quite read under the dim lighting.

“arthur.” the words escaped you before you could help yourself. you felt your heart start again, as if it had been shut off since the moment you left him. it’s like all the colour that had left your world had came back, all at once. in an overwhelming, confusing way.

“hey.” he had a small, awkward smile on his face. he brought a hand up to scratch his head as if he was just trying to find something to occupy himself with. he was clueless on what to do for once.

you cleared your throat. “can we talk?”

notes : the ending is so rushed!

you had always admired steve, but from afar.

he was loud. not scared to show his anger or let his true feelings out, except the few sad ones he kept locked away. hidden. you were the opposite. you isolated yourself and kept a brave face on - no matter what.

which is why you hadn’t let it slip how you felt about him. you treated him like everyone else. steve hated that. he tried to show off to you all the time but it was just seen as him doing it for nancy, time and time again.

“fixed it!”

“fixed it!”

you glanced up at them from the bottom of the tower, now stood alone as robin and nancy left at the first time of murray. you however stayed to make sure they didn’t injure themselves.

you held out two thumbs up for them, “get down safely!” you yelled back, catching jonathons sad gaze as he released nancy had left. you felt for him. you’d grown particularly close with him seeing as you were both more quiet compared to the rest.

they both approached you, breathing heavy. “you boys okay?” you asked as you watched steve with his hands on his hips, blush rising to your cheeks as his breathing grew heavier.

as soon as steve turned to look at you your eyes had averted to jonathan, making him believe your blush was due to the man beside him. “where’s nance?” he simply asked.

steve watched the defeated look in your eyes. “murray showed up.” you gesture to where they had gone, jonathan quickly walking over leaving you alone with a broody steve.

“you okay?”

“mhm.” he brushed you off as he followed after the rest of the group.

you could cut the tension with a knife.

holly had been taken, and the plan wasn’t going to plan as you huddled into the van with the two boys, sitting in the back as you tried to think of a way to make conversation and keep things friendly.

steve had other ideas, apperantlly.

“I mean the hospital is on the way. we could just swing by and bring nancy like flowers or something.” he contemplated, staring down at the wheel while running a hand through his hair.

“jesus christ.” jonathan sighed out, turning to face the window.

“what?” steve retorted, looking clearly confused. you just watched silently, fidgeting with your hands in your lap as you watched the scene play out infront of you.

“i just thought that tonight of all nights you might give it a rest.”

“give what a rest?”

“this bullshit macho competition for nancy’s attention.”

“guys,” you weakly spoke up, unsure on how to calm them down as there voices began raising. “can we—“

“ever since I got back from lenore you are constantly showing off to her. how your better than me?” he raised his brows at steve’s scoff, “which is shitty enough on a normal day but now her parents are fighting for their lives, her sister is missing and all you can think about is giving her flowers. you selfish chauvinistic meathead—“

“jonathon!” you cut in, voice loud as you interupt them. “tensions are high, but don’t be nasty.” you point your finger at him, clearly catching both off of them off. you never picked sides, only mediated.

“he didn’t mean anything by it, we’re all just trying our best here—“

before you could finish your friend stormed out of the van, you scrambling to go after him. you accidentally left your door open, meaning steve couldn’t do anything but listen in on the pair of you.

“please, jo—“

“will you just shut up? please?” he turned as you began to chase after him, throwing his hands out in the air. “I don’t get why you’re defending him, he’s not gonna pick you, he never will. so stop being so delusional and grow up!”

you stop in your place, frozen.

“you’re chasing someone that doesn’t even give a fuck about you.” he added, finally turning and storming off. you couldn’t move, reality hitting you all at once.

you were so embrassed.

you could feel hot tears begin to brim your eyes. you wanted the ground to swallow you whole. your best friend, the person who you confided in, the only person, had just threw you under the bus.

you heard a car door open.

you instinctively sniffed and wipwd underneath your eyes before turning with a shaky smile. he had heard everything, you could tell by the concerned gaze he had set on you.

“are you okay?” his voice was almost timid, like you’d break if he spoke to harshly. you shrugged, feeling your lip begin to quiver. you gave him your best smile.

“i-it’s ironic.” you could hear the shakiness etched into your words, “i mean he’s been chasing nance since like forever.” you let out a dry chuckle, “i mean who can blame him? so have you.”

“i haven’t been chasing nance.” his eyes filtered from yours for the ground. “well for awhile, i was, but that was me trying to..i don’t know. i don’t think it was her, it was just the girlfriend I wanted. if i’m honest.”

you didn’t know what to say. it was like steve had suddenly grown three heads — you’d never seen him open up, to you or anyone else. not in this way anyways. it was always surface level.

“what’s with all this macho stuff then?” you press.

steve hesitated, before meeting your eyes. properly. he didn’t look away, only stepping closer until you could smell his cologne and the chocolate he had just ate.

“i wanted to show i was better than jonathon, yes. but it wasn’t for nancy.”

you scrunch up your face without even meaning to. your head started to hurt with all of the twists and turns you had been on in the past hour. you couldnt keep up.

“who then?” you were answered with a breathless laugh. steve looked down at you, using his finger to tuck good hair behind your ear. you were sure it was a move he used all the time but it still worked.

“well it’s not robin.” he joked, moving closer. “it was my stupid, thoughtless way to impress you.”

you normally hate eye contact, feeling too awkward, but you couldn’t bring yourself to look away from steve. your body was on fire from the pressure of his gaze settled on you, only you. you realise how stupid you had been to miss it all this time.

you practically jump onto him. your arms wrap around the back of his neck and your lips collie, his hands gripping your waist tightly to press your body against his.

it had been the most successful crawl yet, atleast for you two.

“what do i even say?” you slow down your pace as you see arthur’s flat block come into view. your stomach churned at the prospect of what you’d agreed to, the fact you’d agreed to talk to arthur in person.

“just breath, zo.” liv spoke in a gentle tone through the phone. she had stayed on line for the whole walk you’d took from your home to his. she’d been there every step of the way.

you follow her instructions, inhaling deeply before letting it go just as you walk through reception doors. however it quickly caught in your throat — arthur was waiting on you.

“i-i better go, liv.” you stammer as you freeze in place. you hastily say goodbye, not really listening as you stuff your phone into your back pocket and finally face your ex boyfriend. the love of your life.
