I'm frustrated at them for not taking the necessary precautions to keep themselves safe, but this is also the east coast. Most people here have never seen a wildfire up close. Public health messaging is severely lacking when it comes to how dangerous wildfire smoke is.

I fear that when people hear "smoke from wildfires", they imagine that it's just smoke from burning trees. They compare it to things they're familiar with, like campfires or barbecues. Even then, you also know how irritating it can be to sit in front of a fire and have smoke blow right in your face.

Wildfires don't just burn trees and brush. Wildfires burn buildings and infrastructure too. Plastic and other chemicals burn and get suspended in the air, traveling hundreds of miles to enter into your lungs. These chemicals are small enough to be absorbed into your bloodstream when you breathe them in. Children and the elderly are at the highest risk, but there's really not a safe level of exposure.
