At university I met many different types of men, but two that fascinated me were:
Men who were clearly bisexual, but absolutely refused to accept it, and would just gaslight themselves into believing their attraction to men wasn’t real
Men who were straight, but weren’t necessarily protective over that fact, and were 100% willing to just follow their impulses in case they did ever like a guy.
What’s funny is that these two types were often in the same friend groups, but the existence of the 2nd type had no impact on the 1st type’s self acceptance

Take the rule of “no firsts.” In the comments section below her post for Last Word on Nothing, Finkbeiner explained that no sooner had she taken the vow to ignore gender, than she caught herself writing that the astronomer she was profiling was the first to win a certain award. After a reader urged her to stick to her pledge, she removed it.
“The fact that she’s the first woman to do that says a lot more about the prize-giving committee than it does about her,” Finkbeiner explained in our interview. “So if I were going to put that into a story, it would be a story about prejudice in that prize committee.”
It blew my mind, because she’s right. The fact that there’s some many firsts left is the result of bias in the committees NOT IN THE WORK WOMEN DO

While not as strong as the Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom duology, it was the first series I devoured at the rate I read HP. I highly recommend reading all 7 books in the series, but the first 3 are the ones most similar to HP in my opinion. Magic, a school (although not much of the story takes place on the grounds), a late magical bloomer as the protagonist, and the big bad shares some similarities with Voldemort here as well.

In all honesty, I haven't read this one yet. HOWEVER, I was going to recommend her other series (The Prison Healer) because it also shares vibes with HP. But this one actually takes place in a magical boarding school. So, considering her banter already reminded me of HP, I'm excited to read this.
