This is Raederle, one of the main characters of the Riddlemaster Trilogy. I just love how her character is written. She develops some awesome powers but has to work a little for it. She is a strong companion to the main character Morgon and saves his life several times.
Love seeing my name in this font 🥲 The first episode I directed this season is out! I'll wait a few days to avoid spoilers, and then hopefully I'll find time to gush about my team and how amazing they did. Catch episode 1 and 2 of Lower Decks S4 on Paramount plus!!
This is awesome, Megan!
I've been working on more character designs for the Riddlemaster Trilogy. This one is Ghisteslwchlohm, which is mercifully shortened to Ohm. He is a bad wizard who wants to rule the world as the High One.
In response to the tragic news of the passing of one of my favorite authors, Patricia McKillip, I feel compelled to explain something of why I unintentionally went silent on this account. I’ve been hesitant to acknowledge that for the last year, instead of going back to working on my original webcomic narrative, I continued developing concept art for McKillip’s masterful Riddle-Master trilogy (which I grew up knowing by the name Riddle of Stars). I had a powerful creative urge to expunge. Was I just trying to more deeply explore the powerful themes of McKillip’s work in order to understand my identity as a creative; to understand better how to tap my creative energy to tell stories of redemption and healing? Just for that, I suspect the past year’s odyssey will prove to have been worth it.
Was I compelled by a feeling that modern society perhaps needs this story to be revitalized by being adapted into a new medium? It always felt like a long shot to convince the fanbase to trust me with the film rights for an animated adaptation of the story, but still, I kept drawing.
I’ve been trying to become more comfortable with sharing rough artwork that hasn’t been hardened, but going back into my old posts, it’s evident how much my drawing of these characters has improved. I had to study the best of my rough and inconsistent initial drawings to begin nailing down high-fidelity style guides for the major characters.
The challenge with Morgon has been to find ways to visually represent his character growth, and especially his descent into darkness and return from the brink. The person we see the Anuin scene I storyboarded isn’t exactly Morgon’s best self, so it was therapeutic to focus on his gentler side for a change.
With Deth, it has always been a struggle to deal with the gap between his appearance and mental age, as well as between the level of emotion he expresses compared to what he feels. I’ve begun to really enjoy finding ways to break past that impressive poker face of his, while realizing that most of his emotional cues are probably too subtle for the average person to catch right off.
These style guides helped me fall into a cadence where I can keep the initial emotional energy of my rough storyboards AND get the drawings on model much more reliably than when I started.
My favorite headshots from Anuin seem to have settled down to these two. That unexpressed fright of Deth’s came through much more clearly than I expected. Wish I could hold that panel longer....
I started to verge into some more detailed exploration of other major characters (courtesy of a storyboard from that scene at Trader’s Road with Raederle and Ghisteslwchlohm).
And started to really nail down that ending scene at Wind Tower. What can I say? It’s just been too much fun.
Also, I have been keeping my YouTube account undated with improvements to the Anuin animatic, including voicing. https://youtu.be/6Q9zbvywPi0
I got my Riddle of Stars animatic posted on YouTube at last! In this scene I adapted from the genius trilogy, Morgon faces Deth for the first time since Deth betrayed him and must decide if he should exact revenge - a surprisingly gnarly question given that Morgon is missing some important information. This became very much a passion project as I’ve wanted to do something with the source material for a long time, and I discovered some great nuance in this little plot-critical scene while I was studying it. I posted my video at https://youtu.be/vgC4yRnrUkw, and I also posted an analysis to my blog that goes deeper into the artistic choices and the significance of this scene’s outcome to the themes of the book: http://www.thestarlessland.com/blog/My_New_Passion_Project_-_Riddle_of_Stars/
Little thumbnail teaser, hopefully not too spoiler-y. I picked one of the most dramatic scenes in the Riddlemaster trilogy to draw, so to give enough context for the whole dialogue to make sense, I have to spoil one of the most brilliant plot twists in fantasy. I plan to post the whole animatic with context when I get there, but for now, you should read the book, and I should get some sleep. #storyboard #riddleofstars #riddlemasterofhed #morgon #deth #fantasy https://www.instagram.com/p/CIV0H8Ir0zI/?igshid=e0tjroj242gl
I haven’t been very active on this account because like usual, I’ve been drawing frantically, but unlike usual, I’m so absorbed that I don’t feel like taking the time to critique stuff online. I also unfortunately am not getting much done on my webcomic. I'm obsessed with the goal of getting hired as an animation storyboard artist, and I concluded I need more than my own original scripts to get there. So I assigned myself two fan storyboard projects to force me to work in new styles. This is the first set of character designs for the bigger project based on the Riddle of Stars trilogy by Patricia McKillip. I’ve tried to draw these two, Morgon and Deth before, and never had it turn out, so this is exciting. The focus here is to work out a style language. I ran as many lines together as I could, going for a Legend of the Seven Seas aesthetic, and I drew very detailed hair and eyes, pulling inspiration from anime. There’s one more thing I want to try - taking out some of the lines and making the rest not black (Klaus-style) - but these drawings are a good start. Now I get to decide on a scene to storyboard and I might go all out - for the climatic ending of the second book. That will give me a good idea if Deth’s design holds up ;) Incidentally, there is a character in this series named Lyraluthuin, which is my screen name for most of my social media accounts. Not a coincidence.
So… I have to admit that after my last post, I ignored most of my social media for about 4 months. It wasn't easy to pos...
I added a new post where I reflect on my drawing improvement in the last 7-ish years, and analyse some old and new drawings!

I rolled out a blog section on my main website for more long-winded posts since tumblr seemed like poor format for those. Here’s the new post I added at the same time - about a serious subject that has been on my mind for a while. I talk openly and in depth about criticism and the damage of excessive negativity and make a plea for more empathy for students who are not good at their craft but determined to learn.
Power of story
I’ve been building an epic soundtrack playlist and because I was proud of it I decided to share it! This is the first playlist I’ve made with an arc. The idea was born while I was watching Log Horizon and thought it would be fun to pair the epic raid soundtracks from Log Horizon and Sword Art Online and then segue to the crazy intense Death Note tracks. The music builds in intensity until it reaches the Death Note Theme--at which point it’s pretty much impossible to build any more--then releases tension with a few melancholy tracks and ends with Swordland from Sword Art Online. The playlist is mostly anime because it began as a youtube playlist (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxa8fyc0Yu1djjoT9lBnU_3xUGp3GXEkR) where I saved Naruto Shippuden soundtracks while I decided if I was willing to pay $40 a CD to import them from Japan. (I decided launching my webcomic was a good excuse to splurge.) The tracks in parentheses are ones in my youtube playlist that I don’t have yet.
My fantasy webcomic went online last week!
Introduction
This is my first post, so I feel like I should introduce myself and the blog. Hello! The main theme of my blog is storytelling; books, movies, TV, comics, you name it; I love exploring new styles and mediums. I came up with an amusing way to explain my content strategy, so here goes:
The Stages of Discovering an Amazing Fandom (Lyra's edition)
Getting hooked: This fictional world is more real to me than you are right now. Please go away (it's not personal).
After finishing: I wonder why it impacted me like this. Ooh, I wonder if other people are having the same reaction I did. *Cue the google searches, watching YouTube critiques, and hunting down fanart*
Re-watching/re-reading: Other people's commentary solidified some ideas and raised questions about others. I'd better re-watch/re-read the most important parts and study every detail. I probably missed some things the first time through.
Formulating an opinion: I came up with some clever talking points. Is it weird to call someone randomly and say, "Hey, I discovered this great book/movie/show/comic! Want to hear about it?" In my experience, my enthusiasm to talk about it is much higher than others' enthusiasm to listen, especially if my timing isn't great.
The spell breaks: I'm back to a normally functioning human being. If you ask me about my new fandom, I will probably just say, "Oh yeah, I really liked that." Sorry you missed the golden window to get the gory details. You might get a watered down version if you press me.
My plan for the blog is the write down what I think during that golden window. It helps me move on faster, and I figure there might be an audience for it on the internet. But I'll try to keep the fan-girling to a minimum and focus on critical analysis.
