racist white canadians and europeans want you to believe the slave trade worked like this
it did not. it is public knowledge the slave trade worked like this
and in fighting antiblackness within canada and europe it is so so so important to acknowledge these places's participation in and benefit from the transantlantic slave trade. Slavery is not just the US's dirty past, it is a triangular industry lasting centuries that white people in the united states, canada, and europe benefitted from and continue to benefit from to this day. Slavery was good for white canadians and white europeans. They liked it. they encouraged it. they had slaves, they profited from the slave trade, and they used products grown from US slave labour in every day life. The slavery of Black people would not have been possible on the sheer scale at which it happened if it were not for active, consistent participation from europe and canada.
โKids shouldnโt have to know about that.โ
Okay so actually letting a serious topic be vague and confusing is much more scary for a child than explaining it in calm language they can understand.
When you are in a safe place, explain the serious topic in a way the child can understand.
The fire alarm went off at school today because of a mistake, but your teachers did the right thing to take you outside to be sure it was safe.
Some people use wheelchairs because their legs donโt walk very well. It can happen because they are old and tired, or because they got hurt, or because they were born that way.
Your Uncle Jerod talked to mom and dad, and wants you to call her Aunt Kari now. We will call her Kari too, and we can all practice together if it takes some getting used to.
Anticipate age-appropriate fears the child might have so you can assuage those that are not a threat.
Yes, Kitty died at the vet, but that doesnโt mean that itโs not safe for Puppy to go to the vet.
Yes, Peyton and Jo are getting a divorce, but they are both still part of our family and love you very much.
Yes, Grandma has cancer, but cancer is not contagious, so you are not going to get cancer by visiting her.
Anticipate fears that are realistic, and give the child clear direction about what to do, and what happens next.
If someone asks you to get in their car without permission, find Mom, Mama, or a teacher and tell them right away. We will make sure you are safe.
If Sparkyโs sickness makes him hurt very badly, we are going to take him to the vet and she will give him some medicine, and he will die, but then he wonโt hurt any more. Because Sparky is very sick, we are going to spend some special time with him over the next few days.
If the fire alarm goes off at school again, follow the teacherโs directions. If the fire alarm goes off and you are somewhere alone, go outside, and ask a grownup to call 911.
Reassure the child that theyโre safe and loved, validate their feelings, and see if they have follow-up questions. Give them the option to take space to process, or to stay near you to feel safe.
Iโm sad about Sparky too. Do you think we could make his favorite peanut-butter treats, while we are spending special time with him?
I understand why Grandmaโs cancer makes you feel angry. It doesnโt seem fair that people we love get sick. Would you like a hug?
You were worried about calling 911 if thereโs not a grownup around. I wrote down some important things, like our address, and we can go over these together so you are ready if anything like that ever happens.
These things are principally the job of the childโs parent or guardian, but in some cases directing the child to that caregiver is difficult or impossible (parent refuses/confuses the child, parent is absent, childโs questions are specific and relevant to a situation their parent was not present for, etc.) so I think all adults should be prepared to have these conversations with kids.

my farming sim game will have animal butchery as a normalized part of the gameplay loop to act as a lightning rod to draw all the discourse and thinkpieces away from topics that would annoy me more
in my farming sim game that has animal butchery as a normalized part of the gameplay loop, shipped products will be sold on a weekly basis, not a daily one. you get a big windfall once a week and then you budget around that. if you want more money in the interim you have to go sell to the local merchants whatever products they specialize in.
in my farming sim game, getting married to one of the townspeople will have a significant impact on your gameplay. if you marry the rival farmer, their smaller farm will be merged with yours. if you marry the town alchemist/doctor you get a buff to all your alchemy and you wake up from getting knocked out in your own home instead of their clinic. if you marry the priestess she uh, idk she does weather related divine magic for you so you can choose the weather, idk i haven't thought too hard about that one yet
my farming sim game will have a MILF you can actually F
these tags are probably a joke but genuinely i do think that more games with romance candidates in general should require you to at least be on friendly terms with their family/close friends before they will romance/marry you. so yes. romancing the MILF will require attending her kid's pretend tea party first. to prove you mean business
the costuming in Hadestown is so insane. Orpheus standing out for his red bandana and whiteish shirt, Persephone standing out in her bright green summertime dress in a world that is otherwise so dark and dull. but then you ALSO have Hades's suit and Persephone's mourning dress standing out for how black they are - in a world that's otherwise so worn and faded, the gods wear pure pitch black right off the tailor's table. and don't even get me STARTED on the way red is used to highlight emotion and vulnerability
in 30 years there's going to be a production of hadestown with eva noblezada as persephone and reeve carney as hades. and it's going to go the hardest anything has ever gone
headcanon that Grace grades the other scientists work only if heโs focusing on something else or heโs tired.
Like. Imagine one of the scientists studying Astrophage gives Grace a paper detailing their recent findings and Grace being locked in on something else, he just looks up, skims the paper, then pulls out a red pen from somewhere and marks it, โB+, you forgot to account forโฆโ then after a 5 minute lecture on how to improve, he goes back to typing or smth. The scientist just standing there baffled thinking โB+? What are we in? A classroom?โ, and kind of bum hurt that they only got a B+ (bc ofc they want an A) so they go back to researching with a new ferocity cuz dammit theyโre going to get that A. Cue the science team being fueled by Dr.Graceโs grades, them just rubbing it into each others faces if they get Aโs or A+โs. Headcanon 2 is that he just keeps gold star stickers in his pockets so for example: All of them are in a meeting, Dr. smth pipes up with a good suggestion and he goes, โGreat job! You get a gold star.โ And just puts it on their phone case or badge and moves on, everyone is flabbergasted and a bit jealous except for the scientist who is just vibrating with happiness and a bit of fear because the co-dictator of the world just gave them a gold star.
Extra: Grace also hits Stratt with the 1 2 punch of โA+! Hereโs a gold star.โ On one of her presentations after staying up for 36+ hours and slaps a gold star on her forehead before conking out on the desk. Carl is in the corner desperately trying not to laugh bc Grace just did this in front of the entire Petrova task force while Stratt is just staring at him in confused amusement. Extra-extra: The mess hall on Strattโs Vat has a โFridge-boardโ which is a magnetic board acting as a fridge for all of their papers with Aโs on it. Grace just being mortified when he learns that heโs been grading and giving gold stars to the top minds of the world and Stratt having to assure him that is boosts morale and that itโs fine.
(Once he gets sent off to space, everyone in the task force keeps their stars to remember him, because he never said goodbye.)
(Eva looking at her star and throwing it away, because she couldnโt stand the thought of having a gold star from the man she killed.)
(emerges 3 hours later covered in blood) i figured out what emotion i was feeling
Went to the grocery store with my kindergartener. We weighed some bananas: 2 pounds even. We weighed a watermelon: 4 pounds even. We weighed some mangos: a little over 1 pound. We weighed the watermelon AND the bananas: 6 pounds even.
โThatโs funnyโ said the child โbecause 2+4=6 and two pounds and four pounds is six pounds. Itโs like the same as math!โ
โWhat happens if you add 6+1?โ
โSEVENโ
โWhat if we put one pound of mangos on the scale?โ <mangos added>
โITโS THE SAME!!โ
โOK, whatโs 7-4?โ
โThree?โ
โWhat if we take the four pound watermelon off the scale?โ <watermelon removed>
โMama! Are you telling me math works In Real Life? Think of all the things you could measure!!โ
I wish I had more to say about Nancy thanย โitโs goodโ, butโฆ.itโs good.
