Help stop Heathrow airport expansion - deadline Sept 1

Heathrow airport, the busiest airport in Europe by passenger traffic has been lobbying to build a third runway for the past two decades; the current Labour government has made this expansion a flagship policy, claiming it will 'boost economic growth' and fast-tracking development of the plans, aiming for construction to begin by 2029.
The expansion, proposed by the airport's private owners and endorsed by ministers, involve demolition of much of the village of Harmondsworth and rebuilding of a section of the M25 motorway, to construct a new runway to the northwest of the airport site, allowing for an additional annual 276,000 flights and almost doubling the number of passengers to 150 million a year.
This is completely incompatible with the UK's legally-binding net-zero and climate goals, and the government has put forward no proposals on how the massive increase in CO2 emissions and other pollutants - from the extra flights and also from construction and surface transport - would be mitigated. This is on top of the current government also approving expansions at four other airports seving London in the past two years - including a new runway at Gatwick.
Furthermore, research commissioned by the government itself has shown that the actual economic benefits from the scheme would be miniscule: a 0.05% increase in GDP (down from the 0.5% cited by government previously) outweighed by a net £23bn-£62bn cost to the public due to negative environmental, financial and social consequences. More air pollution, more noise pollution, more vehicle traffic on local roads, and thousands of jobs lost in other parts of the country.

Heathrow’s expansion could risk thousands of jobs
The government is currently consulting on the 'Heathrow Expansion National Policy Statement', a framework by which the expansion plan will be assessed; if the plan meets the standards set out by the framework, it can be approved. The framework will be presented to Parliament and voted on before it comes into effect.
However, this proposed framework is weak, using outdated standards and providing no real scrutiny, crucially it requires no concrete demonstration of how the climate impacts will be mitigated. Given the government's full-throated support for the expansion and efforts to speed up approval, it is clear that if the HENPS is approved as proposed in this consultation, it will effectively give a green light for this destructive, climate-wrecking expansion to go ahead. The government is also attempting to categorise the expansion as 'critical national growth infrastructure', which would make it harder to challenge the expansion legally.

Expansion of Heathrow airport would be a disaster for the climate, and in the wake of successive heatwaves that have killed an estimated 2,700 people in Britain alone, the need to fight back against reckless expansion of the aviation sector - which already contributes a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions, yet is heavily subsidised by the government - is more urgent than ever.
