ushijima wakatoshi has always been a man of few words. everyone knows that, even you. but what they don't know is that he isn't as heartless as they think. on the contrary, ushijima feels a lot of things—especially for you. however, ushijima doesn't exactly know how to express these overwhelming feelings.
maybe that's why he now finds himself laying in bed with you, wide awake as he silently glares at the mini plush version of him that's cuddled up in your arms. that's right, ushijima hates that plushie of yours. he's finally home after a whole day of practice, expecting to bask in your affection, only for it to be taken away by a mini him.
when did it all start anyway? ah, right.
ushijima had been plagued with game after game lately, some even international. that meant more victories for him, but also more time away from you. now, you didn't exactly hold any grudge against your husband. you understood how busy he could be, and you supported him one hundred percent. however, that didn't mean you didn't get lonely every now and then. because of his absence, you decided to buy the plushie of him you saw while you were out shopping. it was adorable, and it honestly did look like him.
ushijima came home one day after a grueling match overseas. he hurriedly stepped out of his shoes, rushing quietly to the bedroom, only to find you laying comfortably beside the said stuffed toy. he paused by the doorway, calling out to you. "sweetheart?"
you looked up at the sound of his voice, a familiar smile making its way to your lips. "wakatoshi! you're back!" you reached your arms out, motioning for him to hug you. he made his way to you, climbing onto the edge of the bed and planting his hands on your waist, his face buried in your neck. "i missed you." he mumbled, the words muffled against your shirt. "i missed you too." you hummed, kissing his cheek softly.
he pulled away slightly to look at your face, then his eyes fell on the plushie behind you. "what is that?" he asked, his voice as monotonous as usual, except for a hint of something you could quite place. "oh, this?" you chuckled, grabbing the doll. "it's you! i bought it yesterday, cute right?" his eyes narrowed by a fraction as he stared at it. "hm. but why?" he looked back at you. "well, i missed you and i thought it would be a good alternative while you're gone."
that was what you told him, and he believed that since he was home more often, you'd forget all about the plushie—but no. the plushie seemed to occupy your bed every night, stealing his well earned cuddles away. he didn't like feeling this way, but he'd be lying if he said he wasn't feeling even the tiniest bit jealous.
and so, that situation continued for days, which brings us back to the present. ushijima was laying on his side, facing you. you mirrored his position, except you were facing the opposite direction, your face nuzzled into the stuffed toy's body. he glared at the plushie, the plushie stared back at him, almost as if it was mocking him. "i've got your wife now."
he huffed, shifting closer to you and holding your arm, attempting to gently pull it away from the doll. you mumbled in your sleep, moving away from ushijima's touch. he frowned slightly and decided he had enough. he grabbed the plushie by its head, tossing it somewhere onto the floor. then, he held your waist, turning you over and wrapping his arms around you. he kept his chin on your shoulder, relishing in how your body pressed against his. he looked up slightly, shooting the stuffed toy a glance that was almost victorious.
you stirred softly, your eyes blinking open. "honey? huh? where's-" he cut you off the moment he saw you looking around for the plushie. "sh, it'll be fine. i've got you now, go back to sleep." he answered, kissing your forehead.
you chuckled softly to yourself, knowing he was most likely jealous. but you decided that you'd tease him for that tomorrow and just enjoy this moment for now. after all, your husband is still the best at cuddles.

a/n: another one😼 i think this is so cute lol, but i'm not sure if ushijima is in character:') please correct me if this is the case. i hope you guys enjoy this, love y'all!

featuring: pts!sugawara koushi x fem!reader | synopsis: the one where it's the first day of school at miyagi elementary school. | tags: fluff | a/n: here's the first part!! this is short, but it's just sort of an introduction afterall.
first day of school is always an awaited date. the students come back from vacation all fully energized (well, most of them)! sugawara was excited as well. he's been teaching for a while now, but meeting new students is always something he looks forward to. sugawara had built a pretty good name in the school. many parents liked him, and so did the children. oftentimes he would receive gifts from the moms—although some of them were just competing with the others, he still appreciated it nonetheless.
he woke up earlier than usual today, wanting a fresh start to the new school year. as he arrived at the teachers' faculty, his coworker greeted him with two cups of coffee in hand.
"oi, sugawara! you want one? it's got three shots of espresso." she offered, beaming at him.
he paused. three shots? jeez. "no, thanks." he simply offered a polite smile and walked over to his desk.
it was still a bit early, and he had about an hour before class starts. sugawara decided to review the list of students first in order to familiarize himself with their names and ages. then after thirty minutes he made his way to the classroom, tidying up and placing a few decorations to make the place look more welcoming. sugawara also bought candies that he planned to giveaway once the kids arrived.
time goes by and soon enough the grade one pupils entered his room. he watched as their parents dropped them off with a kiss. the children gathered up in groups, some of them recognizing the others from their previous kindergarten year.
"alright everyone, settle down. class will begin soon!" sugawara announced, raising his voice slightly so that he could be heard above the squeals and laughter.
he drew his gaze to the doorway as a little boy stopped right in front of it. he glanced up, his eyes falling on a very familiar face. y/n l/n. he couldn't believe it. was that really you? without thinking twice, sugawara moved to the door.
"y/n?" he spoke up, catching your attention as you fixed the boy's collar.
your ears perked at the voice, and you turned to face him. "sugawara."
so many thoughts raced in his mind. is that your child? are you married? he silently hoped that you were just dropping off your nephew, or maybe you're a nanny.
"what are you doing here?" he asked. it was a stupid question, and he mentally face palmed.
you looked down at the little boy in front of you. "uh, i'm dropping of my son."
your son. your son. your son. he nodded slowly, feeling a slight lump in his throat. "oh, right, right." he decided to clear his throat. "hi, there." he smiled at your son. "what's your name?"
"aki." the small, timid voice made sugawara's smile widen. "nice to meet you, aki. why don't you go play?" he gestured to the other kids running around.
aki turned to you, as if silently asking for permission. "go ahead." you whispered, and the boy walked into the room.
"it's been a while." sugawara said, smiling at you. his smile was as sweet as you remembered, but it held a sense of something else that you couldn't quite describe.
"it has. i see you're a teacher now." you returned his smile, although it was a bit awkward.
he chuckled, and he raked his eyes over your form. you hadn't changed much—still as beautiful, he thought. he looked at your hand, and he felt his stomach drop a little when he saw the silver band around your finger.
"yeah, i am." his voice now sounded slightly strained and he looked away. "so, you have a family now, huh?"
his words seemed to make you freeze a little, your shoulders tensing up ever so slightly. "i do. i do..."
sugawara noticed the hesitation in your tone, and how you shoved your hands in the pockets of your coat. "he looks just like you. your son, i mean."
you relaxed at his comment, a warm feeling in your chest as you both watched aki play with his classmates. "you think so?"
"mhm, he's got your eyes." your lips curved up, forming a much more genuine grin. "i suppose he does."
you stayed silent for a moment before sighing. "anyway, i have to go now. it was nice... seeing you again."
sugawara felt a bit disappointed that your reunion was cut short, but he couldn't blame you. you were always a busy woman. he nodded once more, bidding you a small "bye".
his attention was still on you even as you walked away, and once you were out of sight, he exhaled deeply. "i think i need that coffee now."

the sun had set hours before, switching places with the moon as night began. the city was quiet—apart from the occasional swoosh the cars made as they drove by, and the rustling of leaves when the wind blew past each tree. yet you laid restless on your bed, sleep still not visiting your doorstep. you toss and turn almost every five minutes, trying to get comfortable, but it was no use. your body felt tired, and your mind was turning to mush, but you couldn't find it in yourself to fall asleep. turning your head to the clock on the bedside table, it read '2:27 A.M'.
a soft sigh left your lips as you shifted in bed, now choosing to face your lover as he slept peacefully beside you. akaashi had a soft look on his face, the moonlight shining on his features, making him appear majestic. your eyes raked over his figure, as if memorizing every part of him. you see him everyday, but you could never get sick of his presence. you snapped out of your thoughts as he stirred gently in his sleep, his eyes slowly opening to glance at you. "you're up." the drowsiness in his voice made it hard to determine whether his words were of disappointment or a mere statement.
nonetheless you apologized quietly, which made him raise a brow. "sorry?" he repeated. "for what, love?" he moved his hand from on top of the pillow to your cheek, his fingers grazing your skin. the room was dark, however you could see how his expression conveyed genuine confusion. "'cause i woke you up." you reasoned apologetically. he shook his head slightly. "it's no problem." akaashi was always so understanding, and it made you feel a bit guilty at times. he's too kind for this world, you think. "what's wrong?" he asked. he could always read you like an open book, no matter how hard you tried to hide how you were feeling. "i can't sleep." he hummed at that.
"would you like anything? perhaps some milk might help you." akaashi offered. you thought about it for a moment, before deciding against it. "no, i'm good." he nodded, not forcing you to do anything you didn't want. he understood what sleepless nights felt like, and it was definitely a pain. he raised his arm a little, ushering you to move closer. "c'mere." you obliged, scooting over to him as he snaked his right arm under your head, the other wrapped around your waist.
your head rested against his chest, and you could feel his heart thumping slowly. the cotton of his sweater felt warm pressed on your skin, and you placed your hand on his shoulder. your body fit perfectly with his, as if you two were puzzle pieces bound together. his finger traced circles on your back, his chin perched atop the crown of your head. he held you close, and you felt so safe in his embrace. "go to sleep." he whispered, his eyes closed. you placed your leg in between his, your limbs tangled underneath the duvet.
you wanted to reply, but the words died on your tongue. your eyes felt heavy, and they slowly shut. the sound of his heartbeat in your ear, the way he pressed mindless patterns against your spine, it was all like a sweet lullaby. soon, his breathing evened out, signaling his slumber. but you didn't notice it anymore as you also drifted off in the arms of your beloved.
days like this were a common occurrence. moments where you felt helpless. but when everything feels too overwhelming, a single touch from him eases a thousand worries. life is not easy—but when you fall into bed with him, the world seems to pause. then suddenly, it's just you and him.

a/n: okay, i haven't posted in a while😢 i had the most OUTRAGEOUS writer's block and it's just IWHDOWBDOQDBWI also I'm trying out a new format so
you've known atsumu miya ever since you were kids. your mothers were friends so they made sure to enroll you, atsumu, and osamu in the same school. atsumu has always gotten on your nerves, and it seems as if annoying you is on his daily to do list. however, it would be a lie if you said you hated him.
you were currently in class, your head resting on your palm as you wrote down the essay your teacher assigned. behind you, atsumu was preoccupied in making origami. his eyebrows were slightly furrowed as he focused on tucking in the last corner. he smiled proudly to himself when he finished, before tapping your shoulder.
you turned to look at him, seeing him holding up a paper ring. "marry me?" he asked, a lopsided grin on his face. you analyzed the ring, tilting your head to the side. "what would i get in return?" he paused a bit at your question, and then he smirked. "my love and affection." you narrowed your eyes at him, mumbling. "gross." to which he pouted at.
"hey! i'm not that bad." he grumbled, jutting out his lower lip. he had the expression of what seemed like a kicked puppy. you chuckled quietly. "i'm just kidding. sure, i'll marry you." as your words registered in his brain, his face brightened up immediately. "really?" you nodded and he took your hand, sliding the ring down your finger. "heh, it suits ya."
as you took a closer look at the piece of paper, you realized that the color he used was your favorite. and suddenly, a thought popped up in your mind. he noticed that you got distracted, your eyes not blinking while you zoned out. he leaned forward, invading your personal space. "what's goin' on in that pretty head of yours?"
his voice brought you back to reality, and you glanced at him before shaking your head. "nothing." he wasn't convinced though. he moved away, crossing his arms against his chest. "i don't believe you. you're an awful liar." you shrugged. "maybe that's because i'm not a liar." he scoffed at that, a bit amused at your stubbornness.
he knew you too well for you to lie to him. "oh come on, just spill it out." he was more curious now. you sighed in defeat. "fine. i just... remembered that time when we were kids and you told me that you'd marry me one day." you explained. oh, atsumu remembers that. actually, he remembers it very vividly.
it was at the park and you two were sitting down on the bench as osamu went to get ice cream. another boy had previously tried to take you away from atsumu, claiming that you should hang out with him instead. atsumu got jealous and told the little boy to get lost. as you two sat in silence, atsumu came up with an idea to get you to stay with him forever.
"y/n. one day, i'm gonna marry you." he blurted out loud, staring at you with a determined gaze. your eyes widened a bit, and your response came out in a slight stutter. "a-are you serious, tsumu?" he nodded with straight face. "yes. and you have to promise to say 'yes'." you looked at him for a few more seconds before smiling. "i will."
"ah yeah, i did say that, didn't i?" he said with a rather fond smile. "mhm." you hummed softly. "so... is that why you agreed earlier?" he teased. "of course. i don't make promises i can't keep." and you both just chuckled. it was quiet for a while, but then he spoke up, now with a more... affectionate tone.
"i wasn't kidding, you know." you froze, did you hear him correctly? "what?" you asked, disbelief and shock laced in your words. "i wasn't kidding. i was serious about that. i still am." he answered. "i will marry you one day."
his declaration raised a warm blush on your cheeks, and you could feel your heart flutter. "but the question is..." he began, leaning forward once more. "will you say 'yes'?" that's the dumbest question you've ever heard. "definitely."

oikawa tooru as your best friend who has a key to your dorm because he babysits your cat whenever you're gone.
oikawa tooru who abuses his extra key privileges and constantly lets himself in your dorm while you're at class, but you never kick him out.
oikawa tooru who you come home to, seeing him sprawled out on your bed as if he lives there, lazily scrolling on his phone.
oikawa tooru who pouts at you when he sees you come through the door, complaining about how long you took to return and that he missed you (you saw him two hours ago).
oikawa tooru who makes you question what you two really were as he lays his head on your lap, demanding for your affection as compensation to the 'torture' you put him through.
oikawa tooru who closes his eyes when you brush your fingers through his hair, and he swears that he can feel his brain melting.
oikawa tooru who wraps an arm around your waist, telling you that he should be the only guy to ever hold you like this, and that if they wanted to replace him, they'd have to go through the same amount of time and struggle he did back then when he was trying to win you over.
oikawa tooru who huffs and hides his face in your stomach when you ask him "how will i get married then?", grumbling something intelligible.
oikawa tooru who answers your question with "you don't need to get married. it's overrated. you have me anyway, so you won't get lonely."
oikawa tooru who sees you pause, your hand stopping its movement on his head. he takes that opportunity to sit up, changing your position so that you were laying beside him, your head on his chest.
oikawa tooru who snaps you out of your thoughts as he whispered softly. "i'm serious though. i want to be able to hold you like this, even when we're old and wrinkly. if you'll let me, of course."
oikawa tooru who makes you realize that maybe you didn't need anything or anyone else other than him, and that you wouldn't mind staying with him forever.
oikawa tooru who strokes your hair, finally confessing his true feelings to you quietly as you drift off to sleep— not knowing that you were still awake, having heard everything he said.

a/n: this isn't the format that i usually write in, but i figured that it as too short to make into a legit story, so this'll do. plus it was sort of straight to the point, so a synopsis wasn't really necessary. i have an atsumu fic in my drafts, but idk how to continue it yet😭
synopsis: the one where two old friends meet again and maybe now they can be more than just friends.
tags: fluff, mutual pining, pst setting, mentions of alcoholic beverages (nothing extreme), second chances, lowercase intended, not proofread

you and oikawa have known each other since junior high. you two were introduced to each other by iwaizumi since he was your family friend. at first, you hated his guts, merely tolerating him because he would tag along when you hung out with iwaizumi. he was too whiny and he thought of himself like he was some kind of king. but as time flew by, you realized that he was growing on you. you got to see the side of him that most people didn't. his genuineness, his insecurities.
the years passed, and your friendship with him blossomed. you two no longer needed iwaizumi around just to spend some time together. and even your own cold, high walls eventually came tumbling down as oikawa managed to make it through them. his antics still annoyed you, there's no doubt in that— but somehow his lopsided smiles bring a hint of warmth in your chest and you find yourself smiling back at him. he occasionally went over to your house, accompanying you as you crammed your schoolworks. even your parents ask for him to go there, and they always notice whenever he hasn't come over for a while.
you've made a secret promise to him that you'd always attend his games, and you've never failed to miss one. you'd be there in the crowd, cheering him on despite not being the biggest volleyball enthusiast. whenever he makes a good play, he looks over to where you are, checking if you saw what he did and what your reaction was. and even if he has a million fangirls, your compliments are his favorite. he doesn't understand why, but even the smallest 'you did good' from you makes his heart beat a little faster. maybe it's because of how stoic you usually are. or maybe it's because he doesn't see you throwing those words so casually to anyone else.
it was clear to you, to him, and to everyone that your relationship has long surpassed 'friendship'. because friends don't hug each other like that. friends don't look at each othet like that. friends don't look into their future, and see the other as a constant in their life. friends don't want more than what they have. but neither of you confessed. neither of you dared to utter those three words that you both longed to hear. because why risk it and lose it all? at least this way, you'd still be together, right?
wrong. karasuno vs aoba johsai. the match that left oikawa shattered. he felt as if all his years of hard work had gone down the drain. and no matter how much you tried to comfort him, he just couldn't accept it. because afterall, hard work doesn't beat natural talent. with the days that passed, oikawa seemed... different. he wasn't as joyful and bright, and that bothered you to the core. it hurt to see him so down, so lifeless. but it hurt more when you found out he was going to leave. so many thoughts and questions filled your mind. but in the end, it all boiled down to one thing. volleyball. you knew that nothing could stop him. not even you. so he left.
you said it was fine, that you understood. but as you look back at that event now, 9 years later, you still felt bitter. you wondered whether things would've ended up differently if you told him how you felt about him. but the answer was clear. you sighed, taking one last swig of your wine before placing it in the sink and heading upstairs. you were a successful businesswoman now, just like you had imagined. however, you imagined reaching this position with oikawa by your side. you sat on the edge of your bed just staring at the wall, when suddenly your phone lit up. it was a text from an unknown number. 'hey' it read. you picked up, a confused and slightly frustrated look on your face. it better not be another spam message.
'who is this?' you asked, and the next response caught you off guard. 'it's me, oikawa.' you froze a bit, how did he get your number? isn't he in argentina? 'i'm in japan right now, miyagi to be exact. i met up with iwa yesterday and i asked him for your number.' well, that answered your questions. 'oh, i see.' you replied, and you felt your hands trembling slightly. 'you still remember me, right?' you could practically hear his teasing tone. 'of course. how could i forget?' he reacted with a heart to your message. 'anyway, would you like to meet up?' he offered. 'yeah, that'd be nice.' 'great, i'll see you at the usual, say 3pm?' you hummed to yourself, it's been a while since you've been to that place, but you agreed nonetheless. 'alright. see you.' and with that you closed your phone, setting it back on the nightstand.
over on oikawa's side of the phone, he gently smiled at your message. he sighed, placing the screen against his chest as he looked at the window in his hotel room. truth be told, he was extremely nervous to send you a message, but he really wanted to see you. he laid on his bed, just as you did, and gazed up at the ceiling. he couldn't believe he was gonna see you again, and he felt a mix of anxiety and excitement. he wondered if you looked different, but he doubted that. you were probably still as beautiful as ever. he let out a deep breath, closing his eyes. he'd worry about tomorrow once it arrived, for now, he was happy with the progress he made in reconnecting with you.
the following morning, you woke up a bit later than expected. you rubbed the sleep out of your eyes and turned to look at the clock. 12:57 pm. you mentally cursed at yourself as you hurried out of bed and scurried to the bathroom. luckily you didn't take much time to get ready, and by 2:00 you were all set. you grabbed your keys and headed out. as you drove, your fingers tapped against the steering wheel every now and then. you thought if maybe oikawa had something important to tell you. but you didn't focus on it, knowing that he probably just wanted to meet up. as you arrived at the agreed spot, your eyes fell on the small cafe. this was where you two would go every weekend to hang out and study. although you did most of the studying, oikawa just complained about how boring it was. the place wasn't that big, but it was a cute and vintage coffee place. you got out of your car, inhaling deeply before entering. as soon as you got inside, your attention drifted to a tall man. he had brown hair, and his back was turned against you. you walked up to him, gently tapping his shoulder. "oikawa?"
the man turned to look at you, and you immediately recognized that bright grin. "y/n-chan!" oikawa greeted, standing up and enveloping you in a tight embrace. you stayed still for a second before hugging him back. you could've sworn he grew taller. and bigger. you both pulled away soon, and you looked up at him. "wow, uh... it's so nice to see you again." you spoke. "i missed you." he smiled at you, and his sincere words made your heart skip a bit. "i- i missed you, too." you gave him a small smile back. "come, sit." he walked to the other side of the table, pulling out a chair for your. you mumbled a small "thank you." before sitting down. he tucked your chair in before going back to his own seat. "so, how have you been?" he asked, his hands placed on the table. "i've been alright." you nodded slowly. he tilted his head at your answer. "just alright? are you sure you're okay?" and just like that, he could still read through your lies. you sighed and looked down at your hands. "to be honest? i've been better. work is just stressful and i haven't been able to socialize a lot lately." you admitted.
his expression softened. "oh, i'm so sorry about that." you turned your head up to gaze at him. "no, don't be." you shook your head. "yeah but... i'm sorry that i wasn't here to help you get through the tough times." you could hear your heart break a little at his apologetic voice. but you had to admit that you also wished he was with you during your struggles. "thanks... uhm, how about you? how's argentina treating you?" you changed the subject. "it's great, actually. at first, i felt a little homesick. but now i've warmed up to the place, and the people." he smiled. "that's nice." you told him, and you felt happy that it was going good for him. "we actually have a match next week, so i have to leave tomorrow." you paused. tomorrow? already? why didn't he try to contact you sooner? "oh... that soon?" you asked, a bit disappointed. "mhm. i really don't want to leave yet. but i don't want my team to struggle." you nodded. you understood, of course you did. "but hey, let's enjoy this day together." he grinned at you, and you couldn't help but smile back.
the rest of the day was amazing. you both walked around town, revisiting your old spots together. like the water fountain at the park where you two had ice cream at midnight. the convnue store that you two frequented after your classes. the arcade where he won a plushy from the claw machine, which he gave to you and you still have it to this day. the evening was filled with laughter, and this made you miss the times you spent together. soon, you two went to the bus stop, sitting down on a nearby bench. you sighed softly looking up into the night sky as the stars twinkled brightly. "you know... i really wish you could be at my games." oikawa said quietly. "really?" you looked back at him.
he nodded. "i miss hearing you cheer whenever i do my serves." you paused, not knowing how to react. "but... you've got the whole gymnasium cheering for you." he stared directly into your eyes, a mix of emotions in his gaze. "it's not the same." you both went quiet, just sitting down together. you decided to break the silence by asking a question that has been bothering you for a while now. "do you think... if you got into the nationals, you'd stay in japan?" he was slightly taken aback by your question. he averted his gaze, now looking up at the sky. "i don't know." you hummed in acknowledgment, and the silence continued once more. he moved closer, resting his head on top of yours. "can i call you when i'm back home?" he whispered. you leaned into him, laying your head on his shoulder. "please do." it felt a bit bittersweet to call argentina his home, because he always thought that home would be wherever you were.
eventually, you both parted ways. as you returned to your house, you slowly unlocked your door, stepping inside and closing it behind you. the walls felt so empty, so quiet after the night you had with him. you plopped down onto your bed, a sense of sadness washing over you. your time with him felt so short, especially after the long years that you spent apart. you buried your head in the pillow, groaning in frustration. why did it have to be this way? and why, after all this time, why didn't you tell him that loved him? why couldn't you do it? you yearned for his presence, and after finally having it again, you lost it once more. it was so cruel. you couldn't move on, and you couldn't love anyone more than you love him. and if you could, you'd have done something, anything, just to prevent him from leaving. but then that would be selfish. and deep down, as long as he was happy, you were too. but was he happy?
the next day arrived, and oikawa silently dreaded it. he wanted more time with you, but he didn't want to neglect his career. his body felt weak and heavy as he walked down the airport. he felt as if something was holding him back, telling him to stay. but he boarded the plane anyway. he could now only hope to see you again. even if it was in another 9 years, he wouldn't mind. as the time of his match came, he felt a strange sense of nervousness in his chest. he didn't usually feel this way, so why now? the rest of his team was warming up, stretching, but he sat on the side. the coach then told everyone to line up, and as he looked over to the crowd, his world had practically stopped. there you were, standing on the bleachers with the little balloon that they sold in the gift shop outside. was it really you? it was! he felt all the anxiety go away, replaced with a newfound joy and relief. he clenched his fists, taking a deep breath and walking over to his position on the court.
seeing you there made his plays even better than before. he was pumped up, and he wanted to do his best. he didn't want to disappoint you. his sets were on point, and his serves held a strong force. he practically led his team to victory, and as his teammate scored the final point, the people went wild. he panted, his eyes searching for you. you had a big smile on your face, one that he had missed so dearly. the moment the match ended, he rushed outside, frantically trying to find you. "tooru."
he froze, slowly turning to the direction the sound came from. he felt tears well in his eyes as he saw you standing in front of him. he took slow steps before jogging up to you, hugging you tightly and lifting you up in the air. he placed you back down, burying his face in your neck, inhaling your scent. "you're here... you're here..." he mumbled breathlessly. you held him in your arms, your hand moving to cradle the back of his head. "of course. i never miss your games, remember?" he lifted his head towards your, his eyes drinking up your every feature. he leaned forward, smashing his lips against yours in a gentle and loving kiss. the kiss extended on for a few seconds before he pulled away, connecting his forehead to yours. "i love you." "i love you, too."

the sun was barely up, but kuroo was already walking to the gym. nekoma had a practice match with a lesser known school, which was booked by the opposing team's coach. he strolled quietly, his shoes creating a soft 'tap' with every step. his hands were buried in his pockets, his eyes trained on the road in front of him. he woke up a bit earlier today than usual, and although he didn't particularly like playing with little sleep, he figured that it'd be okay since the match wouldn't take that long. as random thoughts filled his mind, he noticed a familiar figure exiting from the convenience store. it was y/n. kuroo smiled softly before jogging up to her, placing a hand on her shoulder. she jumped a bit at the sudden touch and turned her to see who it was.
"ah, kuroo. you scared me." she sighed, her body relaxing from the initial shock. kuroo chuckled, his usual smirk dancing on his lips. "sorry. anyway, are you headed to school?" she nodded, fixing the paper bag that she was holding in her hands. "yeah." kuroo let go of her shoulder, stretching his hand out. "let me hold that for you." he offered. she smiled slightly. "are you sure?" he nodded and grabbed the bag. "thanks." they exchanged smiles before walking side by side together.
the silence between them streched out, but it was nothing awkward. it felt casual and almost... comforting. and it wasn't the first time that they were alone together, considering that they had some stuff to do as captain and manager of the team. secretly, kuroo thanked the universe that he woke up thirty minutes after his alarm, because now he got to spend some time with her. breaking the silence, kuroo looked inside the paper bag and spoke. "what did you buy?"
"oh, i bought some grapes for the bus ride. i haven't had breakfast yet." y/n chuckled sheepishly. he raised an eyebrow, looking over at her. "why not? it's bad to skip meals, you know." he scolded lightly, to which she just sighed and nodded. "yeah, but i just got used to rushing to school every morning. and my stomach can get moody in the morning." kuroo understood her point, but he also had an argument in mind, ready to answer. however he held himself back, not wanting to cross any boundaries. so he just changed the subject. "i didn't realize you liked grapes." y/n hummed in acknowledgment, placing her hand around the strap of her bag. "i do. they're nice to snack on. i like sour grapes in particular though." she paused, looking over at him. "how about you?"
"ah, no. i don't hate them, they're just not my favorite. and i'm not a fan of sour stuff. it makes my mouth feel tingly." y/n laughed at that. "tingly, huh? i get that." kuroo's lips curled into a soft smirk, her laughter bringing a sense of warmth in his chest. the conversation died down, leaving only the sound of their footsteps as they neared the school. eventually, y/n let out a quiet yawn, which didn't go unnoticed by the captain. "still sleepy?" he teased. she brought her free hand to the back of her neck, rubbing it awkwardly. "a bit. i slept late last night." kuroo's smirk relaxed slightly, a concerned expression on his face. "barely enough sleep and an empty stomach? i wonder how you're still alive." the playfulness in his tone was still present, yet a hint of worry was lingering in his voice.
"i'm fine. i'm stronger than you think." she tried to play it off with a confident smile, but she genuinely seemed tired. "still, you've got to take care of yourself more. we only got one manager, remember?" she chuckled. "right. don't worry about me." he smiled back, but deep down he couldn't help but worry. eventually, they arrived at the school gates. they entered and headed straight to the gym where the bus was already parked and ready to go. as expected, they were the first ones there. but they couldn't really blame anyone, it was still rather early and they weren't leaving for almost another hour. "i didn't realize how early we were." y/n said, looking around the area. "yeah, it's only 5:46." kuroo agreed, checking the time on his phone. "let's just wait over there." she pointed to a bench near the gym, and they both sat down.
a few more minutes passed and the other members soon arrived. coach nekomata asked everyone to gather around, giving a few reminders to the team. then, they all boarded the bus, everyone taking their respective seats. y/n sat up front next to the window, placing her bag on the floor near her feet. to her surprise, kuroo sat next to her, putting his bag beside hers. "oh? i thought you usually sit over there." y/n gestured to the empty seat on the other side. "what? am i not allowed to sit beside you? we're a pair afterall, am i right?" he gave her his usual smirk. she shrugged and nodded, leaning back a bit in her chair. "i guess so." and with that, the bus' doors closed, and it slowly left the school. the others were busy chatting amongst themselves, with kenma perched in the corner, his nose buried in his video game. the drive to yokohama would take about 50 minutes max without traffic, so it was a pretty long journey.
y/n took the paper bag, reaching her hand inside to grab a grape, tossing it in her mouth. "i still don't get why you like those so much." kuroo mumbled, watching her chew on the fruit. "it's delicious, that's why." he just scoffed with amusement and turned his head away. the ride continued on, and they remained quiet, occasionally pointing out a few interesting things they saw on the road. soon enough, they reached their destination. the team got off the bus and lined up, making their way inside the school. a few whispers and looks were thrown casually as they walked through the hallways. as they reached the entrance to the gym, the opposing team greeted them with warm smiles. kuroo scanned the members, but someone caught his eye. he turned to nobuyuki, whispering discreetly to him. "who's their captain?" he asked. "i think his name's nakamura yuto." kuroo took a mental note of that, watching the way the said man eyed y/n.
as the teams entered the court, coach nekomata instructed y/n to grab the balls so they could practice before the match. she nodded and walked over to the corner where the volleyballs were stored. she grabbed the end of the cart, pushing it towards the players. suddenly, a pair of hands held onto the same end, helping her push it. she looked up, meeting the gaze of none other than nakamura yuto. the captain smiled at her before speaking in a friendly voice. "let me assist you." she smiled back and nodded. unbeknownst to the two, a certain cat was watching the scene unfold with narrowed eyes and clenched fists. kenma noticed kuroo's glare and walked up to him. "what's wrong with you now?" the words snapped kuroo out of his thoughts as he turned his attention to the shorter male. "nothing." he merely dismissed it and walked away. kenma, of course, didn't believe him, but he didn't pester him about it any further.
the two sides lined up on opposite ends of the net, and with the referee's whistle, the game began. it went smoothly, and despite the other team's confidence, they were losing a lot of points to nekoma. y/n sat on the side, observing the match. her focus drifted to kuroo, watching as he blocked an attack with one swift move. she felt her stomach fill with butterflies as he laughed proudly. as soon as she realized the way she was reacting, she cleared her throat and averted her eyes to watch yaku instead. a few rounds passed and it was nakamura's turn to serve. to y/n *and* kuroo's surprise, he gazed at y/n with a sly smirk before launching the ball in the air, hitting hard as it landed on the other side of the court. yaku yelled a quick apology as he failed to retrieve it, and the game went on. however, kuroo felt his annoyance spike, and he wanted to wipe off that smirk off nakamura's face. the other members noticed kuroo's sudden change in behavior, and how his attacks seemed more aggressive.
the match came to an end, with 25-18 as the final score. the two teams congratulated each other, shaking one another's hands. when it was time for the captains to exchange word, kuroo squeezed nakamura's hand a bit harder than necessary. after that, they retreated to their respective lines and bowed at each other. and of course, as a polite gesture, they also helped clean up. as y/n was returning the volleyballs to the cart, kuroo went over to her and handed her the last ball. "you did great out there." she smiled, and he felt a sense of pride and satisfaction at her compliment. he flashed her a grin, crossing his arms against his chest. "of course. i don't come to disappoint."
nekoma packed up their things and headed out, walking back to the bus. everyone was tired and sweaty, but it was a good match. before they got on the bus, nakamura caught up to them, panting a bit as he stood in front of y/n. "hey, i was wondering what your name was." the man asked. before she could answer though, kuroo butted in. "that's none of your business." his demeanor wasn't friendly, and he had a hostile energy. "what-" nakamura was cut off once more. "is she part of your team?" kuroo asked. the rival captain furrowed his eyebrows at the question. "no?" "exactly." and with that, kuroo took y/n's hand and led her inside the vehicle.
"what was that all about?" she asked with a confused and slightly annoyed look on her face as she sat down. "he was hitting on you the entire day, wasn't that obvious?" kuroo replied, taking a seat next to her. "so?" she raised an eyebrow. "what do you mean? were you really okay with him doing that?" now, they were both confused and annoyed. the team clearly heard their little argument, but they didn't bother to interrupt. "no. but i can defend myself." y/n reasoned. "that's not what i meant. i just..." kuroo's words trailed off. "you just what?" he stayed silent for a while. "i just didn't like how he was acting towards you. like he saw you as a piece of meat, or a trophy he could just win." he explained, his voice growing a tad softer. y/n paused, taken aback by his genuine expression. "oh. well... i appreciate that, but next time i'll be fine on my own." she looked away, turning to the window beside her.
the rest of the ride was quiet. this time, the silence was extremely awkward, the tension was palpable. they got back to tokyo after an hour, and everyone parted ways there. as kuroo walked home, the thoughts of the earlier events still playing on his mind when he felt a tug on the back of his jacket. he turned to check, and there stood y/n. her eyes weren't looking at him, instead pointed at the ground. "hey, uhm..." she began. "i'm sorry for what happened back there." kuroo felt his shoulders relax as she apologized. he shook his head and placed his hand under her chin, tilting her head up to face him. "no, i should apologize. you're right, i shouldn't have acted that way. but truth is... you mean a lot to me. and i think i've started harboring feelings for you. so you could say that it bugged me a lot when that captain kept flirting with you." he confessed.
y/n felt a warm blush spreading across her cheeks, staining them a deep red shade. "kuroo... i like you, too." this time, it was kuroo's turn to get flustered. "wait, really?" he asked, a hint of hope in his eyes. she nodded and smiled, taking his hand in hers. "yes. i feel like we've always had a special connection. one that goes beyond being friends." he smiled and gave her hand a small squeeze. "i felt that too." they stared at each other for a while before kuroo spoke up. "do you want to get some food?" she nodded. "sure. i'd love to." he moved from where he was situated, now standing next to her. "it's a date then."
