the thing that most annoys me about how people talk about Japanese media and culture is how they'll take one unconventional example or sometimes a straight up work of parody and then act like it's in any way indicative of the culture or particular trends and not just one cherrypicked example

one company sells computer programs that people "marry" and suddenly it's a cultural trend. there's one vending machine with underwear in it and suddenly Japan is a nation of perverts who get off on that. this is the very idea behind "weird Japan" which, in the modern day, is one of the most racist yet widely spoken of ideas about Japan. you could apply these standards to any nation, but people have chosen Japan to be the target of this racism because of the over-the-top nature of things like anime make it easier to believe

but if your views on actual real-world Japan are influenced entirely by anime, then that's a problem of its own
