                        𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝’𝚜  𝚝𝚑𝚎  𝚖𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚘𝚗  𝚍𝚘𝚕𝚕𝚊𝚛  𝚚𝚞𝚎𝚜𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 ,  𝚒𝚜𝚗’𝚝  𝚒𝚝?          macmillan  utility  was  booming  with  joe  profiteering  off  of  gordon’s    𝖻𝗋𝗂𝗅𝗅𝗂𝖺𝗇𝖼𝖾 ,    donna  was  the  sole  head  of  mutiny ,  and  cameron  was  in  tokyo  with  her  husband.  at  least  she  was    𝗌𝗎𝗉𝗉𝗈𝗌𝖾𝖽    to  be.  but  she  isn’t.  no ,  instead  she  stands  on  gordon’s  doorstep  all  alone  with  only  a  single  checked  bag  at  her  side.          (  𝗐𝗁𝖺𝗍’𝗌  𝗍𝗁𝖺𝗍  𝗌𝗎𝗉𝗉𝗈𝗌𝖾𝖽  𝗍𝗈  𝗆𝖾𝖺𝗇?  )          the  entire  flight  from  tokyo  back  to  san  francisco  she  thought  about  this  decision.  she  asked  herself  what  it  was  supposed  to  mean  to  possess  the  knowledge  that  she  would    𝗐𝗂𝗅𝗅𝖿𝗎𝗅𝗅𝗒  𝗋𝗎𝗂𝗇    her  marriage  for  gordon  clark.  she  mulled  it  over  more  times  than  she  could  count ,  really.  after  absentmindedly  walking  off  the  plane  and  through  baggage  claim ,  she  took  a  cab  to  his  house.

                        her  heart  pounded  against  her  ribcage  like  a  rat  in  a  cage.  it  begged ,  no ,  it    𝖽𝖾𝗆𝖺𝗇𝖽𝖾𝖽   to  be  heard.  and  she  heard  it ,  heard  it  clearer  than  anything  she  could  ever  recall.  her  train  of  thought  recoiled  as  the  cab  parked  in  front  of  his  place.         (  𝗐𝗁𝖺𝗍’𝗌  𝗍𝗁𝖺𝗍  𝗌𝗎𝗉𝗉𝗈𝗌𝖾𝖽  𝗍𝗈  𝗆𝖾𝖺𝗇?  )          then ,  before  she  could  realize ,  she  stood  on  the  porch.  the  lone  suitcase ,  reddened  cheeks  from  a  nipping  breeze ,  and    𝗁𝖾𝗋  𝗁𝖾𝖺𝗋𝗍    on  her  sleeve  to  keep  company.  the  door  opens ,  there’s  a  look  of  both  pleasant  surprise  and  utter  confusion.  she  doesn’t  give  him  a  chance  to  speak.

                        ❛    i  couldn’t  do  it–––  i  couldn’t  do  it ,  gordon.  i  tried.  god ,  i  really ,    𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢    tried.  i  thought  if  i  just  got  away  from  here ,  if  i  put  donna    𝚑𝚞𝚛𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐  𝚖𝚎    in  the  forefront  that  i  could  sever  my  ties  here  and  i  could  be  happy  in  tokyo  with  tom.  but  i  was    𝚠𝚛𝚘𝚗𝚐 ,    ❜          lip  quivers  and  lash  lines  well  with  tears  at  her    𝗉𝗈𝗈𝗋𝗅𝗒  𝖾𝗑𝖾𝖼𝗎𝗍𝖾𝖽    confession.

but  then  there’s  that  question  again ,  only  this  time  it’s  his  voice  she  hears ,  not  her  own  conscience.          (  𝗐𝗁𝖺𝗍’𝗌  𝗍𝗁𝖺𝗍  𝗌𝗎𝗉𝗉𝗈𝗌𝖾𝖽  𝗍𝗈  𝗆𝖾𝖺𝗇?  )          the  fear  of  telling  him  fades  away.  he’s  heard  her  out ,  he  appeared  happy  to  see  her ,  even  if  it  was  a    𝗌𝗁𝗈𝖼𝗄.    without  hesitation  and  without  giving  it  much  thought  at  all ,  she  cups  his  face  and  pulls  him  into  a  kiss.
