Hi Bat! I was at the Sunday 3pm show of Cyrano de Bergerac at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). It stars James McAvoy. Before the show, I spotted Sam Heughan when he bought a beer from the bar. He was wearing the same jacket that was on the fan pics in NY. I wasn’t sure at first it was him but he removed his mask to drink I knew for sure it was him. He was standing by one of the bar tables very low key. I don’t think anyone noticed him. I wasn’t sure if he was waiting for someone because he was by himself at this time.

I didn’t want to bother him and I was too shy to talk to him and my friend had arrived by then so we went to our seats in the orchestra. We were seated on the left side group of seats. A few mins after, Sam walks in (he was seating in the center area by the aisle on the 2nd row. I was diagonally maybe 4 rows behind his row on the opposite aisle. He had an empty seat beside him. Just before the play starts, the theatre starts blinking their lights to signal to the audience that the play is about to start. Just then an usher walks towards Sam’s seat followed by a tall, skinny lady with dark bob cut. She was wearing a black mask but I recognized Caitriona because of her walk. She has a “walk”. Anyway, he stands up to let her in and puts his hand on her back as she gets by and then sits down. I was totally surprised to see them together.

At intermission, they were quick to get up to walk to the lobby. I tried to spot them but couldn’t see where they went but they were back to their seats just before the 2nd Act started. At the end of the play after the curtain call, they were quick to get up with Caitriona grabbing Sam’s hand and an usher came to them and they followed her out to the lobby. I thought maybe they were led backstage to talk to James McAvoy. He was really good in the play.

Anyway, I thought I share this now since I just got back from NYC.

I had a family member peel me off the floor sobbing over another FEMA project deadline for our hospital. Our ER is broken. Our staff is exhausted. My shoulders and back are chronically spasming from the stress, workload and demands.

You have a right to your opinions.

It is difficult and excruciating enough as it is.

It is the disdain shown towards healthcare and those of us trying to keep people alive that is the most difficult part for me.

I'm so very sorry to hear the struggles and desperation people in the medical field are going through. Things didn't have to happen that way if people were less self-centered and considered the well being of the collectivity. The only lesson learned after 2 years of this mess is that too many people are bloody selfish and everyone pay the price of that, but the ones being battered the most are the courageous medical workers.

This is ghastly and something that our NHS is coming up against over here. It’s as though health workers are heroes when it suits the politicians or the public, but scapegoats when it’s convenient.

I’m currently self isolating after having tested positive for Covid. I’ve had every jab along with my flu jab. I fully intend to carry on wearing a mask and sanitising even though our useless government is to lift every restriction on the 28th January.

Sorry to threadnap but the way health workers have been treated both by politicians and public really pisses on my chips.

My own country has one of the shittiest healthcare systems. It doesn’t help that so anti-vaxxers are growing and so are the different variants of COVID-19. I have nothing else to offer but the promise to keep practicing health protocols, get my vaccine, and encourage others to do the same.

For those who follow me who are not in the Outlander fandom I want to try and explain what went down yesterday. (15th January 2022).

For years - literally years - an LGBTQIA+ section of the fandom has existed. However, on social media and especially on stories that contain Queer characters or plots and themes, there has been consistent trolling, bullying, and negative comments including homophobic hate messages.

Yesterday a number of people within the Queer section of the fandom started receiving anon hate. However, the spelling wording and tenor of the messages was the same as publicly posted tumblr posts from known accounts. And one account in particular. This account was making hate-filled responses to blog posts made by people within the LGBTQIA+ corner of the fandom.

When the individual user was challenged by specific blog users (happy to mention names but only if they consent) the tone of the messages became more serious and began including personal attacks. Now the messages were not just attacking Queer characters, Queer interpretations or Queer storytelling but now including personal attacks of a homophobic and hateful nature against individuals within the fandom.

These messages included as I say, attacks of a personal nature. Some of these were relatively petty but some of them escalated up to encouragment to self harm and encouragement for someone to take their own life. Death threats, people. We are talking about named blogs of known individuals sending death threats to users because of who they are or the way they write fictional characters.

Its easy to sit by and think, ‘Wow that looks ugly!’ And do nothing.

This fandom has a serious problem with hate and yes, with the alt-right. The fandom has ingrained homophobic, racist and white supremacist narratives. Some of that comes from the way the original canon texts express themselves.

When someone receives a message telling them to go kill themselves, the correct response is not to sit by on the sidelines.

This fandom needs to decide what it thinks is right. And I feel I have an obligation as the writer of stories like Triquetra which I am aware changed the zeitgeist of the fandom for a lot of people, I feel I have an obligation to use whatever small platform I may have to stand up against hate and bullying.

I lived through the gaslighting, sock-puppeting, the plagiarism, and so much more. But really it comes down to this:

Either you believe in decency or you don’t. Either you believe in the inherent worth of human beings or you don’t. Either you believe in standing up for what is right or you don’t.

Now is the time to let the world know what you believe.

No one is saying every single user on the internet ever has to personally go to war with every troll. But whoever you are, and whatever your fandom (or none) a show of support from outwith the LGBTQIA+ section of the Outlander fandom would mean a lot. This corner of the fandom has been fighting this fight - that other people keep bringing to them - for a long time. Years and years at this point.

Please, if you think that the spreading of hate messages and death threats is wrong, consider posting a short blog post expressing your solidarity.

Give hate no quarter.

Do not tolerate intolerance. Thank you for your time.

Yes, yes and yes! I just had this same conversation the other day. I know who they are. So do others. Unfortunately they have a large following and even some who DO know they do this still pander to them under the guise of “disliking conflict”.

Neutrality is pretty damning when death threats are being spewed and you decide to turn a blind eye.

I’m not into naming names because I’m not interested in more hate than I’ve already received, either you know or you don’t but it’s pretty common knowledge who this is…

Be careful who you align yourself with and who you support.

I stand with the LGBTQIA+ community, no one deserves to be oppressed and threatened over who they are. It’s f*cked up in so many ways and I hope the monsters doing that will be called out and shunned (but ideally banned from Tumblr and any other social media.)

I’m not as active as I used to be because of the show’s hiatus and my busy life, but I am disgusted that something like this is happening in the fandom. Disgusted but not surprised.

There are so many disconcertingly disturbed and spiteful individuals, not just in this fandom, but on the internet. Knowing that a supposedly “safe space” such as Tumblr OL has been poisoned by such horrible sentiments is truly heartbreaking.

To the homophobic pieces of shit bloggers who are insecure little assholes, do us all a favor and go straight to hell. You are not welcome here.

To the Queer side of the fandom, you are loved, valid, and a pillar of our little community. You have all done wonderful art, fanfics, blog posts, and even those who just quietly support, you are all amazing. We love you and support you and STAND WITH YOU. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

LMAO I just saw Sam’s post on Instagram about this and had to do a double take. Outlander moving to Starz is a bad, bad move, especially if they’re taking it off other streaming sites like Netflix where the majority of spike in viewership came from in the past year.

There are many countries who can’t access Starz, and moreover, won’t pay an absurd amount for a monthly subscription for one show. Me included. OL may be their biggest moneymaker but only to those who can easily access the show. If they take it off Netflix, y’all can find me downloading the eps on T*rrent and Pir*tebay. ☠️🏴‍☠️
