Rereading captive prince after a couple years. Actually, listening to the audiobook. How on EARTH, after reading this series well over 7 times, after so many years, it still manages to make my chest hurt and I realize new things every time I read it? I love them so bad I miss them

the thing i ADORE about the dark rise series is that these are books which lie to you. And lie a lot. Will is lying to the reader. Pacat is misdirecting all the time. The ending of book 1 (and book 2 in itself) recontextualizes everything on a reread. See: the Lady in the mirror having eyes like Will's mom. That line is completely, bone-chillingly different on a second read. There are multiple versions of the same story (Visander's death, Anharion's willful betrayal or slavery, the COLLAR IN GENERAL!!), and we STILL don't know what is accurate. I guarantee the 3rd book will do the same exact shit.

That's what gives these books such a staying power in my mind. Like there is so much to theorize about, so much to question and doubt. Not to mention the themes!!! The THEMES!!!

have you considered that owning a book is basically communism? You pay one and then you can reread it for the rest of your life? You can even let friends read your physical copy? This setup is extremely problematic for authors since they could earn more money if each physical book came with a monthly subscription deal.
