i felt inspired to share this on tumblr today, so here goes.
everyone on this earth has, does, and will experience loneliness throughout their life. it’s just a part of being human. but ive found something that helps me, personally, in times of overwhelming loneliness. one evening i was really distraught, lying in bed with tears streaming down my face, partly because i just felt. so. alone. i remember sort of flashing back to every moment within the past few months in which i had experienced tremendous loneliness mostly caused by being let down, disappointed, and hurt by people who i considered close to me. the loneliness i felt as i laid there in the dark was suffocating. i was crying so intensely i could hardly breathe. and then, in that moment of despair, the Spirit spoke to me and said, “but you’re not alone, you have never been alone” and i proceeded to flashback to each one of those moments of loneliness again, only this time, the Spirit had me imagine the Savior there in each one of those moments. i remember one particularly painful moment when i was just curled up on my closet floor, and due to the inspiration of the Spirit, i pictured the Savior, sitting beside me. now whenever i feel alone or anything like that, i picture and feel the Savior sitting next to me and i immediately feel less alone. He is always there, He always has been there, He always will be there. in our darkest moments, the Savior is sitting beside us. He knows our pain, He knows our struggles, He knows every confusing and frustrating and painful emotion we have or will ever experience. and He is sitting with us in those moments, because He has been where we have been and He doesn’t want us to have to go through it alone. there is a song called “you raise me up” that many of you are probably familiar with, the lyrics in the first verse hit me so hard one day because, after hearing them, i immediately thought of this experience: “When I am down, and, oh, my soul, so weary… When troubles come, and my heart burdened be…Then, I am still and wait here in the silence… Until you come and sit awhile with me.” because the Savior walked this path alone, we don’t have to. He is always there, He always has been, and always will be.
When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives.

Because He respects your agency, Father in Heaven will never force you to pray to Him. But as you exercise that agency and include Him in every aspect of your daily life, your heart will begin to fill with peace, buoyant peace. That peace will focus an eternal light on your struggles. It will help you to manage those challenges from an eternal perspective.
