Complicated Steddie in The Pitt AU
Steve Harrington moves to Pittsburgh, and trains to become a nurse...
His first year at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, is one of the hardest things he's ever done.
But, it's also the most rewarding.
He loves to help people. Always have, always will.
It isn't until a night shift, during his second year, when he becomes a topic of conversation.
He can hear the whispers, the wondering.
He's isn't the shyest person, not standoffish in any way, plenty of patients have tried to flirt with him, so has a colleague or two, but he doesn't want to mix work with pleasure, nor does he want to discuss his personal life on the clock.
But of course, as soon as this becomes tonight's main source of gossip, that’s when someone from Steve's past, makes a reappearance in his life.
Eddie Munson is on tour with his band Corroded Coffin, but accidents on stage do happen, and now he's on his way to the emergency room...
His only thought, as he sits in the waiting room, blood-soaked towel pressed to his nose, was of him, trying to do some fancy guitar trick and hitting himself in the face.
Sure, there’s a part of him that thinks it was metal as hell, but the other part, hopes his nose isn’t broken.
After a couple of hours, they finally call his name, and he’s being led to the area where he’ll be looked over, hearing some gossip about a nurse on the way there.
He’s told to sit down, and that a nurse will come by to check on him momentarily.
But when the moment comes, he’s in for the shock of a lifetime.
“Holy shit,” they say in unison.
“You’re the bloody rockstar?”
“Wow. How long has it been?”
“Long enough to go through nursing school and become a nurse.”
Steve sits down, and asks Eddie to show him the damage.
Eddie removes the towel, and Steve starts to assess his injury.
“Well, it doesn’t seem to be broken, but, we should get a doctor to order you an x-ray, to really be sure.”
Steve goes to get a doctor, but Eddie reaches out to stop him.
“I still can’t believe I’m seeing the Steve Harrington in the flesh.”
Steve lowers his voice when he says, “You’ve seen me in the flesh plenty.”
“I sure have, big boy,” Eddie smirks, as Steve rolls his eyes.
“Let me go find a doctor.”
And Steve is gone in a flash.
A Dr. Santos comes to check on him next, she orders the x-rays.
And the results are, that his nose is… not broken.
So, he’s fortunate enough to get discharged.
All he has to do now, is to ice it and take something for the pain.
But before he heads back to the hotel, he tracks down Steve.
“I’m on my way to a patient right now.”
“This will only take a second.”
“What do you want, Munson. I’m a little busy.”
“I’m sorry. About everything. I should’ve been a better boyfriend.”
“We were never dating, remember?”
“I know. But I wanted to be. I just let myself believe you deserved better.”
“I did deserve better,” Steve crosses his arms.
“Again. I’m sorry. If we could go back, I would’ve asked you to be mine.”
“Well the past is in the past.”
“Yeah, it is,” Eddie looks down at the ground.
Steve sighs, “But… the present is now.”
“Yeah?” Eddie looks back up at Steve with so much hope in his eyes.
“Yeah. Y’know… there hasn’t been a day that’s gone by, that I haven’t thought about you, you jackass,” Steve uncrosses his arms, to place them on his hips.
“Same here, Stevie! Well, minus the jackass part.”
Another nurse goes by and says, “Harrington, socialize on your own time, we have patients to see.”
Steve, nor Eddie, sees the playful look on their face as they pass.
“Well that’s my cue, I really gotta get back to work. Do you need me to call someone to pick you up?”
“Nah. The guys are in the waiting room.”
“Well alright. It was… nice to see you, Eddie.”
Steve gives Eddie a small smile, then turns to walk away.
But before Steve can slip away from him again, Eddie blurts out a question, “Would it be out of line to ask if I could call you?”
Instead of answering, Steve turns back around, and expectantly sticks out his hand.
It takes Eddie a second to scramble for his phone, then he’s handing it to Steve.
Steve quickly puts in his number, and hands the phone back to Eddie.
“I promise you won’t regret this.”
They say a quick farewell, and with a final wave goodbye, Steve watches Eddie walk back out into the buzzing chaos of the waiting room.
Steve barely takes a few steps, when he feels his phone vibrate in his pocket.
He checks his phone, it’s a text from an unknown number, it reads, ‘I promise I’m finally ready to treat you the way you deserve this time. So you better be prepared to be swept off your feet, Sweetheart. – Eds’
Steve puts his phone back in his pocket, and can’t help but to smile in the middle of triage, only to see his fellow nurses smiling his way.
He should’ve known word travels fast in the ER.
