Lucy mentions in book 1 that she keeps a vase of flowers on her desk (it can be seen from the window) and i can’t help wondering

does Lockwood ever start buying them for her?

does he notice the colors and types she usually chooses, tucking the information away in his mind until one day he comes home from running errands with a bouquet of them and it’s “oh Luce I saw these while I was out and you’ve needed fresh ones for a few days now hope that’s okay”

and it keeps on like that, him buying her a new bouquet every time she needs one (sometimes before she’s even realized the old flowers are dying)

and when she leaves the company, the last bouquet stays behind… dying slowly, dying and shriveling up in water gone black and green. A metaphor, George mutters to himself when no one’s around.

but the morning after Lucy comes back, she goes downstairs to find fresh flowers in her sparkling clean vase.

Like she’d never left.

Just reminding everyone that George is so good at what he does that Fittes kept him on for SIX MONTHS while he was being his fantastically honest and curmudgeonly self

he IS that guy.

i just had the mental image of Lucy dying (in her old age of course) and waking up on the Other Side and Skull is thrilled because it’s Lucy and she’s on his side and he doesn’t have to share her with anyone, least of all Lockwood—

and then Lockwood shows up.

(because Locklyle are the kind of endgame romantic idiots who died in each other’s arms minutes apart after a long happy married life)

and i guess you could think of it as a beautiful tragic moment where Skull realizes the girl he loves has never really belonged to him…

or you could just enjoy the comedy of imagining Skull’s expression of mingled fury and disbelief

As promised, the opening paragraphs of The Memories Go Dark.

The stories had been told for generations. The vicious Captain Carlyle and the determined Captain Lockwood having a feud lasting past death and into their children. 

Captain Carlyle was raising his daughter, Lucy, to be an even crueler replica of him. The Carlyle name would always be one uttered in fear. Lucy had grown up in a world of ash and fear; no village the Carlyle’s would go through would ever still be intact by the time the boat was gone.

Captain Lockwood had vowed when he was young that he would take Carlyle down. Even past his death, his oath was kept alive by his children. The eldest, Jessica had been missing for years, the tavern rumors spanning from saying she was undercover and spying on the Carlyle’s, while others said she had hitched herself down and had gotten married. His son, Anthony, took over the pirate legacy, working diligently with his fathers old crew as the fame and infamy of the Lockwood name grew. With how hard the Lockwood’s were working, everyone hoped the Carlyles would meet the end of their tyranny soon.

Especially Lucy Carlyle.

I promise later in the chapter you'll get more on Lucy and her past! I just figured since Lockwood probably wont come in until late in the second chapter, I needed to give a little more background there.

Also i swear the later bits of this chapter are so much better.

the tapestry of music is insane because i had a best friend from fourth grade to eleventh grade. she was my best friend in the whole world—we understood each other on a different level.

in eleventh grade, due to complicated reasons, our friendship fell apart and we became ghosts in each other’s lives.

separately, we found Noah Kahan. separately, we fell in love. and separately, we bought tickets to the same concert.

there were 60,000 people at that concert. sold out. the chances of seeing anyone i knew were pretty low.

my ex best friend walked out of the bathroom at the exact moment I was walking by. our eyes locked. for a moment, we saw each other.

the album (and tour) title song is The Great Divide. if you haven’t heard it, listen to it.

she is my Great Divide. when Noah played it for the stadium we were both in, all I could do was think about her and pray for her and wish her the very best.

next day i texted her to tell her so, and it turns out… I’m her Great Divide, too. we were in the same place, listening to the same song, thinking about it each other.

and we aren’t going to be friends again. Probably ever. but we love the girls we used to be. and we can smile and say

how crazy is that.

hear me out: george, holly, and kipps fight tooth and nail to be the locklyle kids’ favorite aunt/uncle

we’re talking bribes. we’re talking sabotage. we’re talking practically kidnapping the locklyle kids for a fun day at the zoo only for someone else to show up and take them to the circus.

only for flo to show up and by no effort at all be the most beloved

(max is over at a friend’s house. let’s call him philip. i’m babysitting and we’re playing a rousing game of knights)

philip: i have a crush on a princess! her name is sarah mckinley!

max: you have a CRUSH?!

philip: that’s where i was when you were being healed

max: you were seeing her while I was DYING?!(chases him around the house with a foam sword)

Lockwood & Co in Musical Theater:

Kipps: definitely has an amazing singing voice, always fights Lockwood for the lead role and ends up supporting/secondary lead - i’m seeing him as Javert, as Gleb, as Davey, etc. he has an extensive vocal health routine he does every single rehearsal in front of everyone.

Lockwood: can sing—not as well as Kipps, but his charisma, acting chops, and chemistry with literally everyone earn him the lead role almost every time. He’s a true drama king - the only person the director has to tell to pull back onstage. Also will be at every rehearsal even if he’s deathly ill.

Lucy: the stage manager who ended up getting a lead role. to this day she’s not sure how it happened - she’s pretty sure she didn’t even audition. she’d rather be bossing people around and making things go smoothly, although she IS talented. the kind of girl who performs her song and then gets offstage as fast as possible (while Lockwood milks every second and she’s having to drag him off)

Holly: singing, costumes, hair, choreography - is there anything Holly can’t do? unofficially the director because she wants it done just so (and she’s wildly effective), while the director thinks they’re still in control. Tech Week Mom - she brings healthy snacks for everyone

Flo: shockingly good, a triple threat who almost always plays the villain or lead. Her voice is powerful, her acting incredible. She missed half the rehearsals but knows every second of the show, will whisper your lines to you onstage if you forget.

George: enjoys it, far too likely to get distracted with odd jobs around the theater and miss parts of rehearsal. everyone plays a game of “where is george” because you never know what he could be doing at any given moment. Tech Week Dad (brings the actually GOOD snacks)
