33. āSomething about you makes me want to commit extreme violence.āĀ
āTooru. Toooru.ā A voice sounded in his ear.Ā āTooooooru.āĀ
āWhat the hell do you want, Satori?!ā He snapped. Tendou only smirked, straightening up and somehow looking down on him, despite them not even having an inch of height difference.Ā āIām trying to do my work.āĀ
āWhat do you think would happen if you combined nitrogen monoxide with carbon disulfide?āĀ
Tooru blinked, before scowling.Ā āIt would explode, we learned this last week. TheĀ ābarking dogā reaction, remember?āĀ
āRight, right.ā He nodded.Ā āWhat about hydrogen peroxide and potassium iodide?āĀ
āA prodigious amount of oxygen gas.āĀ
āWhat about-ā

Oikawa and Tendou bump into each other after high school, and Oikawa demands coffee for the inconvenience.
written for @candy-harlot :D had a lot of fun with this one!
I drew Oiten just last night and Iām pretty glad on how it turned out X3
Rn I crave a ship for Oikawa where the other part would know what a catch Oikawa is and WONT. STOP. BRAGGING. Like making Oikawa embarrassed levels
But not like "oh you are the best bf im so lucky to have you i want to spend eternity with you" NO FUCK THAT
Im talking about OiTen where one of Oikawa's fangirls asking if he would date any of his fans and Tendou cutting in
"Aaah wouldnt it be nice to wake up next to him, pick him up whenever you want to kiss;);) him?? Well LUCKY me i can do all of that ^_^ ! Sucks to be you :("
OR
AtsuOi where Atsumu takes photos for instagram like he is doing a fanservice while captioning it like
"Too bad we are never gonna break up and all of you are doomed with dating ugly men ;("
"Thank god im dating the 2nd hottest man cause no one deserves the no1 hottest man other than him ;)"
Let me see Oikawa dating people that out-bitches him š« (also atsuoi is def a wip rn)
Ugh, absolute Oiten LOVE @nyxdelanuit

ā Tendou Satori
Trick or treat for tendou x oikawa
Come into my ask box, ask trick or treat, and Iāll either treat you to some fluff, or trick you with some darkness!
Just so yāall know - Iām out of tricks for the season! So you get nothing but tooth-rotting fluff from here on out!Ā
Treat
Tooru was pleased. It had been a great year, and, from the looks at their future projections, next year was going to be just as great, if not better.
Closing up shop for the weekend, Tooru sat down behind the counter and stretched his limbs luxuriously. He felt good, better than he had in years. He was happy. So, so happy.
āCome on, stop dawdling. Weāve gotta get going,ā Satori came out from the storage room, holding a large crate in his hands.
āYou canāt even sit for five minutes, can you?ā Despite the grumbling tone, Tooru stood and got the door for his partner.
āNope. Not when the social event of the season is on the line!ā Satori flashed Tooru his signature shit-eating grin as he sauntered out the door. Tooru locked up behind him, and followed as Satori hummed to himself down the street.
Tooru was still new, but he was learning fast. Around here, autumn was a big deal. They didnāt necessarily celebrate Halloween - most of the children werenāt bothered with trick or treating or costumes - but the celebration of Samhain was a tried and true tradition.
Every community member participated, and brought something to the celebration, pot-luck style. Most of the farmers brought their produce, or other wares. Some offered traditional family recipes. Others, like the Ukais, offered their land to host the Samhain feast. The Tendou family cider mill always offered up refreshments - both traditional, and alcoholic.
Carting the crate of cider with them, Tooru and Satori stepped into the Ukai backyard, and went about helping the others set up the tables, table clothes, food, and drinks. Tooru was glad the cider mill was just across the street. They were inevitably going to run out, and he would be the one tasked with getting more drink.
It was an adjustment from what he was used to. But he was glad for it. It was a new adventure, and a whole new skillset to master. And if his heart happened to heal along the way, well, that was a nice bonus.

Letās talk about Tendou for a bit
So weāre getting a bit more Tendou in S3 E2 and this is nice because Tendou is one of the more⦠interesting characters. In the manga he was one of the first ones I truly managed to despise (at least for like ten chapters). A lot of it has to do with the eyes, but also with the way he holds himself. His face is weird, he mocks his opponents at every turn, heās got a Very Strange sense of humor and loyalty, and his posture always seems wrong, somehow. His neck is usually at an angle, he just feels⦠off.
And the anime takes that little factoid and runs with it.
Haikyuuās animation is usually very, very smooth, you see. Tendouās is not.
Dude is a twitchy bastard. He moves erratically when heās not actually playing. And watching him this episode, combined with the voice, it took a while for me to put my finger on what it is that makes it so unnerving.
The swaying, the twitching⦠you usually see that sort of thing in zombie movies. His animation is basically that of a horror monster.
I mean, obviously heās being set up as the antagonist for the next episode. He is the āguess monsterā after all, but I never realized you could put that level of detail into the way you make a character move.
Adding to this because I just got to watch the episode and Iām a film nerd:
The use of dramatic silence in that final scene after Tendou blocks Hinata is downright unnerving. The sound designers took the care to remove the sounds of the crowd (which, if you listen closely, are present throughout almost the entire rest of the episode, including the cut to Suga yelling at everyone to calm down, but it is cut out during other moments similar to this scene with Tendou), and they even added the hollow-sounding wooshing noise you often hear before scares in horror movies. The last sounds we hear before the horror-woosh (yes, thatās what Iām going to keep calling it) are the echoing of the ball dropping, Hinataās gasp, and a slightly-muted whistle blow. The only sounds during the creepy horror-woosh are from Tendou himself, which is extremely reminiscent of horror monsters, especially Japanese horror ā more on that later on.
Itās also notable that while they use this same kind of scene during other key moments, this one is the longest one by far, as well as the most unsettling. There was one earlier in the episode as well, when Tsukishima and Asahi failed to block a spike from Ushiwaka; that one quickly cut to various reaction shots and immediately got back to the match.
Besides the sound design, the block itself ā which was framed in cooler, menacing purples in contrast to the bright, optimistic oranges that weād just seen both Ushijima and Hinata framed in ā is animated in such a way that itās almost startling. I mean, we all knew it was coming, especially if we read the manga, but itās still jarring to see Tendouās hands stretching, distorted, out of the corner of the screen in the same style they like to animate things like Kyoutaniās spikes and Oikawaās serves.
The last time we saw anything similar to this on a block was when Matsukawa scared Hinata into spiking a specific direction, but even that was softer-looking than this one, and slower, too.
The white-out after the block definitely also adds to the sense of unease in the scene. Immediately cutting to Kageyamaās face ā which now carries a wide-eyed, shocked expression that we perhaps have never really seen before ā and then allowing the rest of the scene to play out in pseudo-slow-motion (where everything still moves quickly, but the time between beats is slower than usual or slower than they should be) lets us know intuitively, before breaking down the scene more than we really should be like we are right now, that something is horribly wrong.
Back to Tendou and his specific motions and the shots during the scene:
As he stands up, with his jerky, extraneous motions (and possibly a different frame count, but donāt quote me on that one), itās notable that even while weāre looking at the scene from behind Tendou, his positioning has some connotations and foreshadowing: heās framed between Kageyama and Hinata, and heās facing distinctly toward Hinata. This framing presents the idea that Tendouās entire focus is on Hinata, and that in itself is going to be what disrupts the freak duo, say,Ā ācoming between themā, or ādriving a wedge between themā.
Cut to an upward-facing pan up Tendou while he challenges Hinata. The fact that itās upward-facing is also an important detail: upward-facing shots, especially of characters, makes them seem more imposing and powerful. During this, Tendouās usual wide-eyed stare is narrowed down to a glare.
The abrupt cut to the ending after the lingering close-up shot on Tendouās face actually leaves us worried about our freak duo ā more specifically, Hinata ā and is pretty much Production IGās signature in getting us to watch next weekās episode.
Tendou himself is jarring because he breaks the sense of realism in the entire rest of the series by being so⦠off. Heās the only character that moves so strangely, and he seems to have not only supernatural speed that rivals Hinataās spike and Kageyamaās toss (he jumped from the opposite side of Shirabu to block Hinata, like⦠please chill, lizard-child), but heās the only one with a borderline-supernatural ability with his whole Guess Monster thing. He also breaks the fourth wall really hard in the next episode preview when he calls out āStop! No spoilers!ā (Iām not 100% sure about how much everyone else breaks the fourth wall in the previews but Iām not going to look through 56 episodes to find out). Tendouās speech patterns are also odd, almost like he speaks with a different dialect, but he just puts a lot of emphasis on certain sounds and has an odd cadence (kudos to Subaru Kimura for bringing it to life so well).
Also notable that his given name, Satori, means consciousness and refers to the Japanese supernatural creature that can read mindsā¦. itās even spelled the same way ( č¦).
Yaāknow how I said Iād get back to Japanese horror and why Tendouās sounds are important? Thatās because in Japanese horror specifically, the monsters tend to have aĀ ātrigger soundā, a sound that alerts not just the audience, but also the characters in the movie to their presence. Itās not just Tendouās movementās that are unnerving and extraneous⦠he also makes extra sounds (including one specific sound earlier in the episode when Ushijima mentions that heād met Hinata before that was very similar to the Grudge groan). Weāll have to keep an ear out for any more strange sounds from Tendou.
āHeh~ Letās go, forwards.ā

Tendou smiled as he switched off his phone, only to click it on again so he could look at his lock screen. It was a picture of you two, bright and smiling at a summer festival last year.
āTendou, hurry up!ā Semi called, half in annoyance as the redhead jogged to board the bus.Ā āWe want to get back in time.ā Was all he said as he closed the door behind him, and Tendou just grinned as he collapsed into the seat next to Ushijima.
Tendou turned to the male beside him.Ā āHow long does the bus ride take?ā
āFourteen hours or so,ā Ushijima replied, setting the timer on his watch ā more for Tendouās benefit than anyone elseās.Ā ā`Have you got your fare for the train?ā
Tendou pulled out the tickets with a grin.Ā āāCourse I have; I thought of everything!ā
Ushijima smiled back at him, shook his head and pulled his eye mask down his face before he lifted his headphones over his ears. Tendou settled back into his seat and clutched the tickets to his chest.
āY/NN,ā Your best friend moaned, planting themselves head first on your table in Starbucks.Ā āWhy did you get me up this early?ā
You chuckled as you sifted through your notes, cramming the few bits that you didnāt remember as easily.Ā āI didnāt want to go alone, and plus you always want to go to Tokyo; this is your chance.ā
Your best friend paused.Ā āYou have a fair point,ā they conceded, finally removing their head from the table.Ā āCould you get me a coffee?ā They asked, grinning when you looked at them blankly.Ā āI mean, I would, butāā They made exaggerated stretching movements to the baristaās behind the counter until you sighed.
āJust a coffee?ā You asked as you stood up.
āCaramel Machiato!ā They chirped, grinning as they finally sat up right. You just sighed and walked to the end of the queue.

Tendou glared at his watch as he willed time to go slower. The hands of the watch were slowly reaching 12:20pm and he was still stuck on the train to Tokyo.
First there was something on the tracks, and then the train overheated, and now someone had gotten stuck in the train doors and three assistants were trying to cut the ladyās coat free, no matter how much she protested it was 100% silk and extremely expensive. Tendou couldnāt help but feel like something in the universe wanted to keep you two apart.Ā
His heart leapt in his chest as he felt the train lurch beneath his feet and watched the tunnel swallow his entire carriage whole.
One more stop after this one. One more.
You stared down at your exam paper and the pencil in your hand as the white sheet was whisked from your table and into the arms of the examiner. Other people in front of you had already begun to depart, but you where still sitting and staring.
āDonāt worry,ā came a voice, old and frail as a similar hand rested on your shoulder.Ā āYou havenāt done that badly, you were writing away.ā
Ah, right.
You were still in the exam hall.Ā
āThank you,ā You told the man as you took your bag from beneath the table.Ā āThat means a lot.ā
The elders man smiled and deported with a small skip in his step, while you turned back to your pencil box and placed your pencil inside; snapping it shut before you tucked it away and exited the room.
You had expected Y/B/F/N to be waiting on the steps with a smile and something to eat, yet they were nowhere to be seen. Instead there was a blob with red hair.
You thought it abnormal at first, but the closer you went the more familiar the blob became, and eventually you had to stop and clasp your hands to your mouth. Before you was Tendou in all his grinning glory, with messy hair and a bouquet of red and pick roses, a four leaf cloves sticker behind his ear.
āWell done, Y/N,ā He told you with a grin as you took the flowers.Ā āGanba~ā
āI thought you werenāt going to be back until tomorrow,ā You managed as you looked at the perfect petals.
Tendou grinned.Ā āI pulled some strings.ā
You shook your head at him.Ā āDork.ā
āLove,ā he replied.
You offered him your hand.Ā āCome on, you look like you need a coffee. How long have you been awake.ā
āNot long enough,ā he said with a smile as he took your hand, interlacing your fingers with his.Ā āPlus, I donāt mind if Iām tire. Not if I get to see you.ā
This was way too sweet and I had an amazing time writing it!
