The Hour season 1 episode 1 (2011) dir. Coky Giedroyc
tagged by the dearest @maryasmorevna for ten people i'd like to know better thingy (thank you so much for mentioning me, and thank you even more for not holding it against me when all i contribute in return is a quiet little like. that's real friendship <3)
last song: not a song but a bootleg? i think i'm falling in love with the NYTW version of 'hadestown' all over again. it's been on repeat for me this july.
currently watching: just finished the last season of 'the bear'. i have my issues with some of the writing choices, same as the next person, but overall i really loved the closure. maybe that's because i've said it under a few claire x carmy posts before, but i genuinely don't think carmen can heal until he realizes that his comfort zone — the kitchen — isn't actually a comfort zone at all. it's the place where he's been hiding from his trauma. (and yeah, it's a burden to know you're good — really good— at something that no longer brings you happiness. but there's something freeing about that realization too. accepting that you need to change in order to start living your life. to let yourself choose at all. that's the transformation i wanted for carmy, and i'm really glad we got to see it).
current obsession: as shallow as it is, probably the world cup. i'm still a huge football fan, UEFA/FIFA scandals notwithstanding. but for the first time in decades (my first mundial was in 2002), it feels so strange not to have one particular country to truly root for. of course i have my preferences from match to match, but it's not the same as having your team to follow all the way through. so it's both liberating and somehow strips the tournament of that all-consuming feeling it usually has for me. it's goodbad not caring that much, you know. (but my heart kinda exploded in the trenches during croatia vs portugal. maybe that's why every other match has just been... there) (or maybe it's because the world cup is being played in a place where the tournament feels more like an event than a national fever... except, perhaps, by the money it brings in)
currently reading: (or, more accurately, struggling through) 'god emperor of dune'. maybe it's just me, but you can really tell it's not as nuanced as the first trilogy. it feels... incomplete. and that moment where herbert seemingly rewrites duncan's past into gurney's? what? gurney was shaped by the harkonnens' slave pits, losing his sister in the process. then, in the fourth book, duncan suddenly has the same — not similar, the same — backstory and motivation. i'm sorry, but that's just lazy writing (and even lazier editing).
currently working on: just turned in a critical essay on 'the other bennet sister' (which already feels like an achievement, considering that the more i work as an editor, the less i actually get to write myself). it's in russian, so i won't be sharing the link, but it closely follows the ideas karina and i talked about in this post (x), if anyone's interested!
currently wearing: it's 30°C in saint petersburg today, so the only thing i want to wear is my birthday suit, lol. but my super old black modal dress is doing the job really well, it's so soft and comfy.
last google search: wish it were something sexy, but honestly? it was a shakshuka recipe, lol.
favorite flower: it's peonies for sure. but! when it comes to having a whole bouquet in the house, they only work if they're somewhere with plenty of airflow — not next to my bed (or even in my room, to be honest). the scent of peonies is so rich and concentrated that, in a small space, it kind of gives me a headache :( but yeah, i'd still walk through fire for them. and tulips too. a tulip is a spring kiss🌷
not tagging anyone, but feel free to say i did if you want to do it too :)

JULIANA CRAIN and FRANK FRINK | THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE
“You’re the kindest, most generous man I’ve ever met, Frank. I’d given up on everyone and everything and you put me back on my feet. You brought me back to life one step at a time. I want you to know that my feelings for you were and always will be more real than anything I’ve ever known...You’ll always be with me, Frank, and I hope I’ll always be with you. ”
In a way, it's rather sweet.
sure no one asked to read the script because it wouldn't be very nolan suck-up of them, but if anne "i think penelope loves odysseus" hathway tom "i didn't know my character was so important" "i didn't read the odyssey i only knew there were cyclops" holland lupita "i haven't read the odyssey" "i would ask homer why women have so little screen time" nyong'o matt "it depends it may be a love story" damon read the script what would have changed? they are proudly ignorant of what they set to adapt and lacking any real curiosity to learn about it. the only one who read the script beforehand robert "he's like jacob from twilight and she is indecisive between two men she loves" pattinson is proof enough it would have been pointless anyway.

GIRL!!! if you’ve Quinn subscription you definitely DEFINITELY need to listen to Jamie Campbell Bower story!!! yes, it’s a dramione fic (they don’t even pretend it’s not!) and i know you aren’t into that ship but the story itself is so charming and witty and cute!!! and Jamie is so freaking hot, it’s insane!!! I swear, you gonna love every second
Dear Quinn Anon, hey!
Truth be told, I did listen to that story you mentioned yesterday (I'm trying to make the most of my 31-day subscription, okay?). Aaaaaand... you were right! It was funny, charming, sexy, and delightfully (very Harry Potter) magical.
But, of course, being me, I can't just enjoy a nice thing, I have to turn it into a psychological drama instead.
The thing is, it was so good that all I could think was: why not make it even better? Why stop halfway? With most of these stories, I can tell they've intentionally simplified the plot so the (female) audience can focus on the hot stuff. But this one? This one had all the ingredients to become both a genuinely complex fanfiction and a steamy romance, and that's what makes the missed opportunity sting even more.
If they'd stretched it into a five-episode story, it would've been so much richer. The banter could've had room to breathe, the rivals-to-lovers progression would've felt natural, and watching genuine curiosity slowly replace all those old prejudices and preconceptions would've been so satisfying.
But no.
Like... guys, you were holding all the cards. Why not go for the Royal Flush?
