Ambrosius peeled off Hilda’s hand on his arm like he was extracting a spider-web stuck to him. “…and what exactly about fundraising events for free education is so un-Apple Peak, Miss Castillo?”

Hilda’s lips drew into a thin, tight smile. “Oh dear, I’m afraid you misunderstood me. I’m all for fundraising, and of course, free education. I’m just afraid your method wouldn’t... match the demographic, so to speak.” Hilda folded her arms, fingers tapping gently on her elbow. “Perhaps something a bit, simpler, would be best. We are but a small town, after all. Very close knit.”

“Oh, darling,” Hilda said. Her hand reached out to gently touch the arm of the person she was speaking to. “Apple Peak isn’t the sort of place for that.”

Tony didn’t expect to spend his Friday night baking with Hilda, but girly as it was, he knew better than to anger a former queen, especially one that was still definitely evil. He wiped the sweat off his face and neck. What the hell? Why was this so complicated? “Don’t you have underlings for this?”

“You are my underling, dear,” Hilda said with a smile. She carefully placed the dough she made Tony combine by hand in a pie tin. It always tasted best when you did it the old fashioned way. “I thought you’d appreciate the work out. That is your thing, is it not?”

“I know our relationship has never been...” Hilda paused. It was predictably difficult to find a diplomatic way to put it. “Perfect. But times such as these are meant for family. Your father always said that. I simply insist that you come back to the house for a nice Thanksgiving meal. I intend on making a feast and who better to share it with than my dear step-daughter?” Hilda smiled sweetly, trying her best to seem inviting, generous, maybe even caring.

Enrique shoved his face into his hands.”So, apparently, I have a wife in Mexico I didn’t know about. Three kids too.” The tabloid was going to make his month a living hell. It didn’t matter that of course, the whole thing was nonsense. He was supposed to be scandal-free. 

One of Hilda’s eyebrows quirked up, her face otherwise still. “I didn’t take you for the type,” she said. It was meant to be a joke but there was no levity in her tone. She was annoyed, though she had no right to be. No, annoyed wasn’t right. She was angry. Of all the corrupt politicians in the world, they went after the one good, honest one they could find. It was hypocritical of her to begrudge them that, but nonetheless she did. “Don’t pay attention to such nonsense, Rico. Your character is unimpeachable.”

The dog ran in front of him, seemingly excited from the sail they recently returned from. Eric felt the same way, ecstatic from the short trip around the harbor only to take the boat out. It cleared his head, only focusing on the task at hand rather than everything going on in his life. Max typically stayed near by, but as Eric saw the squirrel so did the pup, leaving him practically in the dust as the dog took off. He sprinted after him, practically tackling the dog once he caught up. His eyes looked up to finally notice he wasn’t alone. “Don’t worry. I promise he’s tame.”

Hilda’s grimace was poorly disguised by a forced smile. Animals were not her thing. Sure, maybe she could stand the presence of a well-trained bichon frise but definitely not a beast such as the one before her. “Are we sure about that?” Hilda asked chuckling nervously, inching away. She trusted neither the dog nor his owner.

Enrique’s father was running late, again. He was Spanish, so Dia De Los Muertos was something he hadn’t exactly grown up with. It was much more of his mom’s holiday, something he did to make Enrique happy. Some years he didn’t even have time to show up, though Enrique didn’t understand what a retired mayor would have that was so important. His phone vibrated and he saw the text from him. Great. He wasn’t coming. He turned to the grave. “I guess it’s just you and me mom.” He was placing tacos on her altar when he saw her. He smiled widely. “I thought I’d be the only one here.”

“I was in the neighborhood,” Hilda said casually. If anyone asked, she was visiting her late husband. It was a perfectly normal thing for a young, Mexican widow to do on such a day. Touching and bittersweet. It was very on-brand. But, really, Hilda didn’t care about remembering her husband. His silly little daughter did enough of that for the both of them, which allowed Hilda the freedom of forgetting. Instead, Hilda had come to the cemetery for one purpose only: to be with Rico.

Hilda bent and placed a small basket of pan de muerto on the grave before her. She’d baked it herself. None sat on her husbands grave, not even for appearances. He didn’t deserve her effort. He never had. “It’s just a little something.”

A smile, gentle and very un-Hilda smile on her face, she went to stand next to Enrique.

Enrique pulled up to his favorite seat and was relieved to find an apple pie waiting for him. He smiled and almost sensed the presence of his favorite chef. “I always knew I was your favorite customer.”

“Call it my civic duty, Rico,” Hilda said, gracefully settling into the stead across from him. She could afford a few moments in the dining area. Anyone who disagreed could argue with the sharp side of her chef’s knives. “A little appreciation for all you do for Apple Peak.”

“Oh you poor dear,” Hilda said, perhaps a bit too dramatically to be entirely believable. She always was one to lay it on thick; what she lacked in sincerity, she made up in theatrics. Even if she didn’t care — would never care — Hilda knew it was a better look to appear as though she did. And those who received her ‘help’ were often all too willing to repay the debt, however she saw fit. “If there’s anything I can do to help, please, let me know.”
