Category Tags Over Time on AO3
@olderthannetfic comments/analysis on m/m across platforms got me thinking about how pairing prevalence might shift over time. And AO3âČs handy-dandy Selective data dump for fan statisticians makes it easy-ish to compare (as least for that platform). â
[image description: A 100% stack bar chart showing how each category tag contribute to the whole from 2008 through February 2021. The breakdown for 2020 is as follows: m/m 45%, f/m 22%, gen 16%, f/f 9%, while multi and other are too small to label, with each less than 5%. ] The chart shows the percentage each tag makes up for the total category tags used in a given year. That year is based on when the work was created. 2021 is only through the end of February. It should be noted that works can have zero category tags or all 6 or something in between. So it would not be accurate to say that â45% of all works on AO3 in 2020 were for m/m.â But you could say that â45% of all category tags for works created in 2020 on AO3 were for m/m.â The ratio of m/m and f/m to the other tags looks roughly consistent since 2014 although itâs down this year from their highs. f/f, multi, and other have increased, mostly at genâs expense. Iâm going to ignore 2008 since there werenât many works that year. Since then the high water mark for m/m was 2019. f/m was 2018. gen was 2009. f/f, multi, and other are all 2021.
If you are interested in category tags on AO3, check out Older Than Netficâs analysis and @toastystatsâs femslash analysis which includes % of all works over time. Their numbers are slightly different than mine because of differing methodology - creation date vs updated date, percent of works vs percent of tags, etc.

Fluff with a side of ...
As a followup to my last fan analysis which looked at freeform tags over time on AO3 (spoiler: fluff is the current top tag), I present the top co-occuring tags with fluff on AO3.
[image description: an animated chart showing relative ranking of freeform tags found with fluff over time. Starting in 2009 there is a fair amount of ranks swapping places, by 2017 or 2018 the positions change much less. The final ranking as of 2021 is as follows from highest to lowest: angst, romance, established relationship, hurt/comfort, smut, humor, fluff and angst, domestic fluff, alternate universe, first kiss, alternate universe - modern setting, friendship, drabble, christmas, domestic, crack, first time, ficlet, slash, pwp, pov third person, gift fic, ot3, pre-series.]
Some observations:
Who hurt you? Angst and Hurt/Comfort are up. Humor is down.
Fluff as a single word is not big enough for your fluff-needs. The tags Fluff and Angst and Domestic Fluff both break the top 10 by 2021 (which begs the question, is there a tag for Domestic Angst, and, yes, of course there is.)
As others have pointed out tags â content How much do these rankings reflect the changing nature of content that is on AO3 and how much does it reflecting changing tagging norms. I find it interesting how in the early years of the archive tag ranking was more volatile, but the later years are stable (as seen by the horizontal lines). Itâs possible that the ratio of fluff content has converged into a longer term trend. Alternately, itâs possible the community has figured out a labeling convention. Also consider the relative ranking for the tags domestic fluff and domestic. Are there (proportionally) fewer domestic stories these days? Or did fanwork creators decide domestic fluff might be a better tag and start using it instead? (Both? Neither?)
[image description: the same ranked history chart except this one is static and the tags domestic fluff and domestic are highlighted. Domestic fluff is tied for 23rd place in 2009 but climbs to 8th place by 2011. Domestic starts out at 8th place and drops to 15th in 2015 where it remains through 2021.]

Dates: I dropped 2008 data because there were too few works only a partial year. 2021 includes works created through February 26, 2021. Years show total number of times tag was used for works created that year.

I am once again asking people to understand that belief in a deity or deities is not a prerequisite for religious observance in all religions, and the idea that atheism/agnosticism and religious practice are mutually exclusive is a prime example of cultural christianity in action
alright tonight lets talk about [spins wheel] THEOPHAGY. can we eat god.
âIf Mace wasnât such a dick to Ahsoka, then she wouldâve told the council what Maul said and order 66 could have been averted.â
Okay.
1) Mace wasnât being a dick. He reminded Ahsoka that - as a citizen (she called herself that just a minute ago) - sheâs not entitled to know all of the councilâs secrets. (Even if she was still a jedi, they donât need to tell her everything)
Yes, he was a bit short with her, but heâs also dealing with possibly unseating the elected leader of the republic and with the headache that is Anakin Skywalker. Not to mention the war thatâs killed thousands of jedi at this point.
2) Even if he hadnât said anything, who knows if Ahsoka would have told them what she knew?
3) And what good would it have done? This scene is maybe 10 minutes before Anakin returns with the news that Palpatine is Sidious. Even if the jedi put together all the info and realized this, the most they could do was what they did anyway: send some masters to deal with it. Only now Anakin is still there, and we have no idea what he would do. Would he help them? Would he listen to Palpatine, as he did in canon? Most likely he would hesitate and stay out of the way until Mace âsubduedâ Palpatine, and then the exact same thing (or something similar) happens. And then the jedi die anyway.
But, say the masters get there and theyâre like âAnakin, heâs a sith lord!â and Anakin believes them, and for some reason forgets about PadmĂ© for a moment and helps them. Palpatine would kill him along with the others, since now he doesnât need to hold back to trick Anakin into joining him.
Yeah my biggest problem is that people think âoh my gosh. He called her a citizen. Death. Death to Mace Windu. He deserves to die painfully and slowly for it.â She calls herself a citizen like op says, and is asking about extremely sensitive information that like the top 20 people in the Jedi order know. Just because sheâs Ahsoka does not mean sheâs entitled to information that has to remain extremely secretive. And idk it kind of rubs me in teh wrong way that itâs implied that Ahsoka only cares about people that are âniceâ to her (I donât think Mace is being mean, soâŠ) It just kind of means that Ahsoka really does not care about other people and is not kind or selfless, something which is not shown in media. Idk, it just seems kind of out of character for her to not say anything because she doesnât like Mace and the Jedi.
Thereâs a lot of reasons to defend Mace in that scene (including that Ahsoka was not ready to be drawn back into Jedi affairs and made that clear, that Mace was having the worst day ever, that it wouldnât necessarily make a difference, that if Ahsoka held back because of that, that does not speak well to her character, etc.) but ultimately it comes down to: Mace Windu should not have to be the nicest, softest, most uwu person ever to be treated with empathy and sympathy. Other characters are allowed to have less than perfectly soft moments, why would we not extend the same courtesy to Mace Windu? (You know why.)
You. Know. Why.
i said it once and i'll say it again: no more unnecessary plot lines unless they're relevant to the sex scenes.
