so as you can tell i make stuff, hazah, im going to shed some light on commissioning...from the artists pov.
now me and my buddy commission alot,its how we pretty much survive.
It sounds cool right?being able to live off of your art..all you do is your passion every single day..well
rules to commissioning art, you need to find a niche and dig your flag into it and wave it often.
in this case i generaly make cell shaded semi anime art
I am capable of making elaborate digital paintings but they take longer therefore i have to charge much more therefore nobody wants to purchase one.
Pricing is an uphill climb, i charge 20 for cell shaded pictures and most people find it absurd to charge it.
most of my pictures i pour around 4-8 hrs minimum into it
so when we break it down im generally charging around 5- 2.50 an hr for my services...
same thing goes for plush making
the average plush i charge 140 or a 12'
right away about 50 of that is taken out for mats
ill pour minimum 48 hrs of work into it
so plush labor is 1.80 an hr.
i make my labor dirt cheap, like nearly sweatshop cheap in order to make the cost more appealing.
the hard part is working through all of it in a timely mannor.
I am an animator as well...and i have carpel tunnel, as most of us past the 5 year mark tend to have. carpel tunnel is why it takes longer than most. I perfer hand sewing most times and i spend a good hour mauling composition.
so when my buddy gets a message with people trying to guilt him into free canvas paintings with the logic that its fan art therefore it should be free. have this in mind.
the materials are not free.
and the majority of any cost in this magical field is for the artisian craft itself, not everyone can paint on a canvas (me included) not everyone can make plushies. so they find an artist who can.
commissioning is an uphill battle filled with many a sleepless nights and insomnia around rent time. There are some who do it rather well,there are some who struggle to survive.
half of commissioning is a popularity contest, you have to make a name for yourself so people will notice every time you make art. it took me a year of solid fan art and the like before i was even noticed as a commission artist. but thats how it goes.
