avocado when fresh and in season, at least here, is rapidly picked off the shelves leaving behind the smaller, larger pitted or simply unfavourable avocados in place.
when frozen, it's great for smoothies but inconsistent. some parts are firmer, some parts are bitter.
so i tried instead to top my toast with a sort of edamame avocado alternative. sort of like a hummus. i found initially it lacked creaminess when blended to a paste with oil and lemon juice and adding a couple heaped spoons of soy yogurt helped it.
topped with homemade pickled red onions and a bit of olive oil, it actually made a good breakfast! not quite the same as avocado, but in terms of creaminess, neutral tasting and green — it satisfied that itch.
i saw the words “ur not the first person in your lineage to be queer” and it’s rocking me to my core. how many generations down the line did one of my ancestors feel the way i did, feel differently than i did and so damn queerly it was a crime? how many of us were there? did they have hope? did they find peace? i don’t know. at the very least, maybe i am proof their identity was never wasted. reincarnated.
I want slower packages delivered by transportation workers who are paid more to work less and I'm not kidding
2kg of red onions for about ~€1.50 - pretty cheap for where i live. how can we make the most of red onions?
here's how i'm using mine:
- pickled red onions using ingredients i already had at home; boiled tap water, some salt, some sugar, equal parts vinegar to the water and a clean jar.
- the discarded peels were put in a bag to keep in the fridge to use for stock purposes. next time i make soup, i can use the peels by simply boiling them with some salt or adding the salt later.
- you can then compost them and give them back to the earth. that's something!
being sexy literally has nothing to do with looks... you need to be a little bit weird and strange and unusual. people who are physically perfect by societal standards are not sexy like where's the flavour. the body hair. i'm right
it's squash season, so make some soup! butternut squash, garlic, onion, coconut milk and thai red curry paste gives the best hearty and creamy soup.
tofu blended with chickpeas, chickpea liquid, olive oil, lemon juice, nooch, salt, herbs and some grill spice for colour = a pretty decent cheese spread alternative! i had them over gluten free wasa breads 🧡
legit the best advice i can give you: feed your friends
any time someone is in any kind of crisis or upheaval, offer to feed them. tell them they don't have to choose what it is if they can't make decisions, just ask about allergies and preferences and tell them you're just gonna make food happen at their house.
friend having a baby? delivery gift certificate to order food to the hospital after the kid shows up.
someone's relative passes away? offer to make them dinner.
buddy gets laid off? ask if you can order them lunch.
pal stuck in a depressive episode? offer to drive them to fucking mcdonalds, if that's what they want.
people in crisis are tired and sad and angry and the last thing most of them are doing is thinking about feeding themselves. so if you have the ability or time or money, providing that is always, always a good move.
legit i do this all the time, and it is 100% always appreciated. i have taught all my friends that when something happens, we feed each other. it makes people feel extremely cared for, and I cannot recommend it enough.

a recreation of my formerly old comfort meal from way back when i was an omni. perhaps it isn't pretty but the taste was so good!
the breakdown:
the mashed potatoes were literally just skin on, chopped up and boiled in vegetable stock, partially drained and then with some neutral oil added, which got mashed up.
the not-sausages are leftover from a popular meatless meat brand in my country that my partner enjoys "together" meals from. just grilled until it was no longer frozen on the inside.
the broccoli was frozen that i thawed a few hours prior to cooking and finished up on the frying pan after the not-sausages.
the gravy is just sautéed brown mushrooms and a yellow onion in some oil and gluten free soy sauce and blended until smooth.
not too bad for a comfort meal!

i believe it's also important when promoting accessible veganism, that you must consider what might not be accessible for others.
in my country of residence, veganism is relatively easy to get into but if you're purely going for meat alternatives and trending products, it might not be. even the idea of fresh produce for someone might not be a reality if they live in an area where that's too expensive.
it's difficult at times to consider what's worth showing and what isn't. my diet is very bean and legume heavy, but i also have non-negotiable dietary restrictions and the variety i could be showing is out of the question. my diet of soups and stews and curries and such might all blend together for some and might appear bland to someone who is even considering taking the step.
at the same time, showing a meal i might occasionally make when i have some extra funding to spare might come off as false advertising because it isn't what i always eat and i feel that's a universal struggle for everyone technically. we show off meals that fit our highlight reels which might not hold true to how we usually eat.
there are things like "instagram vegans" who show off meals made with fancy equipment and products i don't think are even sold in regular stores which i think is part of the problem, but then again they're only posting what does better in engagement so it's not their fault either.
and that's where i came to the conclusion of showing off the good, the bland and the ugly anyway because that's how you can stick to being real about something. you don't hide the bad parts or the failed attempts. you instead show how it is and that's the only way to move forward with anything.
i know not all celiacs can handle gluten free/pure oats, but if you're able to stomach them then i always recommend this budget-friendly breakfast which is literally just gluten free oats cooked in your plant milk of choice, half or a whole chopped up apple, applesauce, cinnamon and optionally chia seeds and some kind of sweetener. agave for me. 🌿
it might not be pretty but it kept me going from 8am until 1pm which is something!

something that tickles me is how easy it is to shop after a while of building up a vegan friendly pantry and freezer. i'm not even talking about fake meat products or alternatives, but things like beans, (gfree for me) oats, lentils, seeds and things like frozen fruit, saved tired produce, vegetable scraps for broth, etc. everything that needs to be shopped after is just either refills or seasonal fresh produce which comes out not too bad, at least in the region i'm in.
i find it harder to explain to friends and relatives of what exactly it is that vegans eat and especially me with dietary restrictions but honestly after a while, it became easy and the lack of variety people assume i get is in fact the opposite since my meals have become vibrant and varied based on the seasonal cards that are dealt.
and while i do sometimes just eat rice and beans because it's a cheap and tasty staple, i also still enjoy things like soups and stews, tacos and open face sandwiches, things like pot pies and just whatever plates of random tasty things piled on.
i think that's part of why i started up a blog like this again, to show how easy it is to go vegan without the resources if you think you don't have them. i absolutely understand food deserts and not having the trendy products, things you associate as being as expensive and therefore don't have the means of trying into something anyone can try.
so i hope you're patient with me on this account as i figure it all out for you. hope this ramble was okay. :)
