i support everyone’s headcanons but i just can’t agree that eddie didn’t care that everyone thought he and buck were together. like he literally flipped out over it at the diner. he had a visible reaction to it every time the sheriff made a comment. i would say the fact that he didn’t contradict the assumptions more so shows his discomfort with the subject than anything else. because i think queerness is pretty complicated for eddie and that’s before you even get into his huge feelings for buck

okay back from work. look we all have our own interpretations of that scene but here's the thing: eddie HAD A REACTION in the diner scene. buck had a kind of "fucking really?" reaction, but eddie got UPSET. eddie normally handles himself well in conflict. it takes a lot to get him wrong-footed. here, eddie is not handling himself AT ALL. and yes he's tired and hungry and has been getting wound up by buck for however long and that certainly contributes. but it's also the specific way he's being treated: as a queer person. to the people in that room, in the social hierarchy of the room, eddie is now "the gay guy" and eddie is not used to being that guy. not in this kind of environment. eddie has always been taken seriously as a masculine dude and here, suddenly, that's not happening, and i think it's deeply unsettling to him. it's scary. it's violating. he is freaking the fuck out and i think pretty close to a panic attack. look at his face in the last seconds of that scene! he looks like he is about to CRY.

i know this is an unpopular opinion for some reason but i think it's just kind of common sense that eddie would have a hard time with some aspects of being queer. like i just do think that's inevitable for a masculine guy who grew up catholic, in the 2010s, in the south, was in the army and then became a firefighter. he is gonna have some baggage. it's gonna throw him when people can clock him and he loses the safety he's always taken for granted as a straight guy. it's gonna feel extremely exposing when people can TELL things about him he doesn't even know yet himself. it's going to be genuinely scary on a primal emotional level when he is treated in a degrading and emasculating way that he cannot counteract no matter what he does because the more he reacts, the more it proves them right. but that's part of what makes this scene so telling. there is no reason to get in the face of these idiots. buck is actively trying to get him to stop. but eddie CAN'T. it gets under his skin. it means something about him. and eddie doesn't know how to make it stop meaning something, doesn't know how to get back on solid familiar ground, can't reel himself back in. it's fascinating and much more complicated and much MUCH more telling than just eddie standing up for buck.
