The easternmost and southernmost alpine mountain above 4,000 m is located in the Dauphine Alps, a wild and unspoilt region in southeastern France. The northern flank of the mountain is covered by the huge "Glacier Blanc", which serves as a route to the summit. Since there are no resorts with groomed slopes in the region, the village of La Grave north of the mountain has developed into a center for freeride and extreme skiing in the Alps.

With 4,545m the Dom is the highest mountain completely situated in Switzerland. The view from above is described as spectacular, because the Dom stands freely, allowing wide views into the country and over the Monte Rosa massif. His name Dom, which means cathedral in english, actually comes from capitular, Berchthold, who performed the first height measurements on the mountain. The ski resort Saas-Fee is 6 kilometers away and offers some of the highest and most beautiful slopes of the Alps.

Comprising small Zinne, great Zinne and western Zinne (from left to right), the Drei Zinnen in the Dolomites of Sesto are a popular destination for climbers. From here, a lot of developments of mountaineering started, for example, the emphasis on sportiness in climbing. A part of their notoriety can unfortunately be traced to the First World War. At that time the area around the Zinnen was fought fiercely. On both sides the Drei Zinnen were staged as a symbol of the mountain warfare.

The Dufourspitze is the highest mountain in Switzerland and is situated in one of the most impressive mountain ranges of the Alps, the Monte Rosa massif. The border with Italy runs about 100 meters east of the summit. The Dufourspitze got its name from Guillaume-Henri Dufour, a Swiss general and cartographer, who in 1845 published the first accurate map of Switzerland.

Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains dominate the landscape of the Bernese Oberland and are one of the most prominent symbols of the Alps. In particular, the 1,800-meter-high Eiger North Face is famous and has already been described as special in standard work "The Alps" by AW Moore from 1864: "Of the thousands who annually pass under the shadow of this magnificent wall, which in height and steepness alike excels the corresponding face of the Wetterhorn, few can have failed to be impressed with its rugged and precipitous character."

The Finsteraarhorn is located in a very secluded area of the Alps and is surrounded by uninhabited glacier valleys. From Northeast it looks like a shark fin, from the southwest like a large triangle. Due to its remote location, the mountain is much less known as Mönch, Eiger and Jungfrau, although it extends beyond their height and marks the highest point of the Bernese Alps.

Located in the Graphical Alps, the Gran Paradiso is considered the to be the most easiest mountain above 4,000 m to climb in the Alps. Many climbers are using the ascend to prepare for the challenge of the nearby Mont Blanc. The Gran Paradiso is also the namesake of the first Italian national park, which was established in 1856 to protect the Alpine ibex.

The highest peak of the Principality of Liechtenstein is part of the mountains of the Rätikon and a popular destination for the sportive people from Liechtenstein. The Grauspitz drains into the rhine which flows 7 kilometers away. A few kilometers north of the summit skiers find Malbun, the only ski resort in Liechtenstein.

Like a carelessly dropped rock the Grimming is situated east of the Dachstein and is one of the attractions of Styria. It consists mainly of Dachstein limestone and is a popular destination for climbers. Because of its exposed position the Grimming played a significant role in the measurement of Austria: in 1822 a wooden surveying marker was deployed at the top.

The distinctive mountain range on the border of East Tyrol and Belluno was planned to be privatized in 2011. However, after fierce protests, the Austrian Government stopped the process. The Kinigat is easy to climb and offers a magnificent all-round visibility from the shapely summit up to the Großvenediger and Grossglockner. She is one of the highlights of the Carnic High Route, which runs 155 kilometers along the Austrian-Italian border.

The Great Wiesbachhorn is often called the most beautiful mountain above 3,000 meters or the rival to the Grossglockner. The mountain is indeed part of the Glockner group, but the upper part is completely seperated and allows a spectacular view down 2,400 meters into the Fusch valley. The pyramid above the Kaprun reservoirs is significant from an alpine climbing sight: the first spikes were used here in 1924, which were later developed into ice screws.

The Grossglockner, or Glockner, is Austria's highest mountain and one of the most prominent mountains at all. His presence near the Glockner High Alpine Road has casted a spell on countless people and thousands of climbers ascend the summit each year. The name of the Glockner was probably due to its bell-like shape. According to a legend, a sorcerer is captured in the mountain.

If there is a perfect mountain, it's the Matterhorn. His lonely presence at the end of the Nikolai valley and its almost perfect tetrahedral form crown this mountain as a symbol of the beauty of the Alps and a projection for the challenges of alpinism.

Mont Blanc is the highest mountain of France and the Alps. While he appears gruff from the south, he presents himself plump and inviting from the north. With a prominence of 4,697 m he is one of the topographically prominent mountains on the planet. The resort Chamonix at the foot of the mountain range, which is the starting point of some very exciting freeride activities, hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924.
