Toy from Ancient Greece, c.450 BCE: this doll was crafted in the form of a woman with a rolling pin, and it has articulated joints that allow the rolling pin to be moved back and forth
This terracotta figurine was created nearly 2,500 years ago, and it was likely designed as a toy. The doll is positioned above a small tray, and its torso is equipped with a set of pins (located in the waist and shoulders) that allow the figure to lean up and down, gently pushing the rolling pin back and forth across the tray as if preparing food.
Above: another view of the same doll
This is not the only known example of an articulated doll from ancient Greece. Many so-called "dancing dolls" (also known as plangones) were created throughout the Greco-Roman world.
Above: bone figurine with articulated limbs, from ancient Greece, c.350-250 BCE
As this book explains:
Female dolls with attached limbs known as plangones, korai, or nymphai were made in numerous areas in Greece over a considerable span of time from the Geometric to the Hellenistic periods. Male dolls also exist but were far less popular. Although made out of a wide range of materials, including wood, bone, ivory, marble, wax, cloth, and alabaster, dolls of terracotta are by far the most common.
The same book goes on to describe some of the other toys that were created and used by the ancient Greeks:
In antiquity, play was as much an integral part of growing up as it is today, and the ancient Greeks possessed a wide variety of toys and games. Both the archaeological record and ancient literature provide information about these, only some of which overlaps. The most common toys preserved include rattles, dolls, knucklebones, figurines, miniature vessels, miniature furniture, and miniature animals, some of which are wheeled and some of which have riders. Less common are balls and wheeled carts.
Ancient toys have been unearthed in many other parts of the world, too.

Some of the rattles, pull-toys, articulated dolls, and mechanical figurines from Mesopotamia and Egypt even date back to nearly 4,000 years ago.
Above: a mechanical dog figurine from Egypt, c.1390-1352 BCE, with a lever that opens and closes the dog's mouth
In one of my previous posts, I also mentioned a 3,500-year-old wheeled hedgehog figurine from Iran that may have been created and used as a toy.

fell for the oldest trick in the book
It's on the wikipedia page that literal sea people attacked out of nowhere?
Never doubt my shitposts again
YES YES I FUCKING LOVEEEE THE BRONZE AGE COLLAPSE (well not the actual occurrence but I find it so very interesting) THE SEA PEOPLE ARE CRAZY!
Do you know the weird thing about the sea people??
We don't know for sure where they actually came from. They're just wild guys that came out of nowhere from the sea and attacked people. We don't know if they were pirates, random scoundrels or an organised society. They just appeared, fucked shit up and then disappeared. It's such a cool topic!
ugh ignore the full screenshots i couldn’t crop without cutting off the rest. but this new game anthropeum is wild and very fun especially for the archeologically minded of you. for the rest of us it’s a humbling sort of geoguessr but i like seeing the pretty artifacts <3
Hey I don't know if this is too promotion-ish, but a friend of mine is publishing an *incredibly* academic-minded fantasy novel complete with an absurd number of footnotes, essays on physical historical artifacts, an entire in-universe bibliography, all heavily inspired by the real-life story of the ancient Roman emperor Hadrian and his lover Antinous. It's written as an academic thesis by a young, fantasy-present-day historian who uncovers a manuscript answering a millenia-old mystery of where the Emperor disappeared to for five years, only to return a shell of a man who would speak nothing of his journey.
Anyway it just struck me that it would incredibly vibe with *waves hands* all of this academic amazingness. It's called The Wisdom of Emperors, by Alexandra Rowland, the kickstarter begins soon and features bonus papyrus bookmarks (I can't explain how hyped I am to feel actual papyrus) ok byeeeee
Fiction is such a compelling way to explore how knowledge is constructed! This sounds like a really interesting example of that approach :^)

hello..... many things to catch up on...
first of all. I am employed!! yippee!!!! will be working at da museum over the summer.......
second of all. got a 96 on my chem test!! only one question wrong!! dude when I tell you I was stressing out for that test. I was doing so many practice problems and I was STRUGGLING. and then I took the test... and it was so easy........ I finished it in like 40 minutes. crazy......
anyways. I've got a final due tomorrow and I really did not mean to leave so much work until now, but such is the way finals go. okay well i actually thought I was almost done and then I realized I needed Seven sources and not Three sources to get an A. which is a bit of a problem because I only have three original sources..... and I've already gotten Quite a bit of information from those. they have all the information there is to add. I am so braindead I really do not have the energy to read through like 4 more really dense book chapters by tomorrow... 😭 even worse part is that I'm going to have to pick an additional topic to write about to be able to get more sources. which means I have to actually learn the topic. and I'm not going to have Any idea what's going on for like two hours. ooooouuuuuggghhhhhjhhjjjju. we'll see. we'll see what I figure out.
lunch review: had beans, banana and granola bar. classic. got a matcha from the same place as last time Without sweetener and wouldn't you believe it!!! it was ridiculously bitter. added a lot of milk. now it is good.
got a little sandwich right now to sustain myself for another hour or two.... back to the library I go...........

april 29th
guys. bad things are happening.
I have a job interview in two... and a half.... hours...... and I woke up today with a stomach ache
it actually started like three days ago but I thought it was anxiety. and I was like huhhhh that's kind of weird, I really don't get anxious stomach aches unless it's something REALLY BAD. but I really didn't know what else could have caused it so I thought it was that. and then my mom was telling me how she just had a stomach ache too. ooohggghhh. oooggghhhhhhhh. oooooggghhhhhhhh.
it is getting Better though. I got some ginger tea and it's getting rid of a lot of the pain. hopefully it'll be gone soon cause I gotta leave in an hour........
no to do list for today really other than studying in between all my sidequests. I've got a lot to do today.......
april 27
hello!!
we are soooo back. as in, my to-do list is significantly shorter than last week. I also did work for a total of 11 hours last week B) not counting my actual Job Thing in which case it's.......... sixteen hours. wow. guys we're so back.
the to-do list for today..........
- spanish homework
- make graphs for lab
- start lab presentation
- study chem
- chem homework
- request internship info
- other internship application
I will be giving a Matcha Review shortly. the cafe here has some I think. it's not on the menu but I keep seeing people with matcha..... we will see.
Update: my attention span is AWFUL today. had to put on some fast music and I still feel So anxiously bored. and this was while doing chemistry!!! the entertaining puzzle subject!!!! also my headphones are about to die, oh dear. i think I need to go to The Library and sit down at their giant computers because the gigantic freaking screens obstruct anything in my view that could distract me #adhdlifehack
matcha review: it's alright. lowkey does feel like drinking dirt, it is very grainy. tastes like peach. probably because I asked for peach sweetener in it.
Update 2: I GOT AN INTERVIEW!!!!!!! YIPPEE!!!!!!
also I think they just put Too Much Matcha. it got better after the ice in it started melting and I put more milk in it. still some extremely concentrated matcha though there were like chunks stuck on top
hey chat
the fiasco continues. but first. other things:
just gave a presentation for my archaeology class and it went well :) now I gotta make a presentation for spanish. ouuugghhhh. unfortunately was cut short yesterday again but it was lowkey my fault since my parents offered to pick me up and I agreed. and then when I got home I genuinely felt like I was going to keel over and die if I stayed upright any longer so I went to sleep.
my wonderfully short to do list for today:
- spanish presentation
- job application
- study for chem
ANYWAYS BACK TO THE FIASCO. you guys recall how I signed up for the second five week session, right? I vividly remember that. I remember signing up and seeing that it was 5 weeks and being like dang bro that's really short. so tell me why. TELL ME WHY. I WAS WORKING ON MY JOB APPLICATION AND WENT TO DOUBLE CHECK WHEN MY CLASSES WERE. BECAUSE IT ASKED ME. AND IT'S NOW THE FIRST SEVEN WEEK SESSION. WHICH I CAN'T DO. WHY DID IT DO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it does not show up in my dropped classes. I am going insane, because I Vividly remember signing up for the five week one. the second five week one. I am going to go to my advisor and ask them if for Some Reason switching around classes is a thing they do. and then switch to the second five week one. haha. hah. hahahaha. I'm going insane. what is happening. genuinely what is happening.
no lunch review today I haven't eaten it yet
HELLO AGAIN.
today has been Rather Stressful.
I got a lovely little notification yesterday. three weeks after summer registration had opened. and it said:
hey :)
so about your scholarship eligibility. make sure you take any summer classes in the first five week session for them to renew in time for the fall!!!!!!!
and I was like Alright. went to switch my summer class from the second session to the first. and they were full. they were all full. so I was like, Okay. this is a problem what do I do. what do I do. why didn't they tell me this until 3 weeks later when all the classes filled up.
I went through All the first session classes and the pdf of my classes I could take for my major and out of the 250 classes I found !!! three !!! and then I realized I was looking at the SEVEN WEEK CLASSES and not the FIVE WEEK CLASSES. and I need the FIVE WEEKS. they asked for five weeks. so I went back and searched AGAIN for the FIVE WEEK COURSES and I found a class. and I was like alright.
and then I remembered that I actually needed One More Credit. because you see, I came in with 31 units. those 31 units do not matter to my scholarship because I did not take them at the university. and you bet I looked at my little pdf and saw 60 units total. so I was like aw yeah I've got all my 30 credits for this year!!!! WRONG. I HAD 29. BECAUSE I CAME IN WITH 31 CREDITS.
so I was like freaking out because I had planned to pay for Three units in the summer and now I would be paying for Seven. I decided to email my advisor and beg her to pretty please let me into the higher level english class and see if they have any open space (for some sick and twisted reason, the english class I was currently registered for did not allow you to join a waitlist).
so I was writing up my email to her, right???? and I decide to check over all the details one more time to make sure I'm not missing anything. and then I see, that the first session english classes are seven weeks. it will not count in time for my scholarship. because it is seven weeks and not five. ALSO I'M NOT EVEN GOING TO BE THERE FOR TWO WEEKS. I literally can't do the class. I'm going to be out of the country.
I decided to give up at this point. I emailed the scholarship office to ask them just How Long it will take them to renew my scholarship if I take that second session FIVE WEEK class (the second session is five weeks, by the way. but not the first session. why do they do this). and then I went to lab, because by this point I had spent my studying and eating time panicking because I WAS GOING TO BE IN DEBT.
and then. out of lab now. they just emailed me back and told me they would waive the late fee so I could wait for my scholarship to renew. according to their wording, it would be done within the first like two weeks. two weeks bro. I thought it was gonna be two months. ohhhhh my coooodddddddddddddddddd.
ANYWAYS HERE'S THE TO DO LIST FOR TODAY. yes it's very similar to yesterday I had to leave early. against my will. sighs. rolls over on the ground.
- sign up for extra summer class
- scholarship thank you letter (different one. only thing saving my sanity from this fiasco.)
- make graphs for lab
- job application
- finish archaeology article
- archaeology presentation
- spanish presentation
- go home
after today the suffering is significantly reduced. man this has been a long week.
