My opinions on Sunny funny regarding 2 recent posts
I do believe Sunny's character in the game is reliant on Parappa since he's the main character and Sunnys a love interest. He has more character development than Sunny. He has more agency as a character compared to Sunny.
In the first game, she just says one or two throwaway lines that don't say much about her as a character. The bullies hit on her and they get defeated by Joe Chin, this gives Parappa an opportunity to reflect because he wants to be "a hero". Sunny isn't afforded the same, she doesn't think to herself what she wants to do against bullies because the game is not interested her point of view.
When Joe chin offers Katy and Sunny a ride to the beach, She responds
Sure, only if all of us can go.
This scene showcases that she considerate of Parappa and PJ. which is the only hint of characterization we see of her then it gets overshadowed by Parappa's want to get a license to impress her to be his date. Which he does get and we, as the player, get to see that. Sunny doesn't achieve any of her wants in the games since she has no wants like Parappa.
The second game is even worse because, shes not involved at all. Shes seen in the first scene and never again until the end stage. Parappa reaches to a conclusion of not maturing. Sunny's helps him to realize the opposite. She props his character development not the other way round.
She gets one line that's more impactful but its calling Parappa "A Baby". I dont consider this a big flaw or an interesting flaw. She said one out of line thing that's it and it starts Parappa's adventure and jounry to self discovery not hers. She's not beating the Bechdel test half the time.
Sunny fixes one insult at the end of the game while Parappa can, through the games, pay back his own dad after crashing his car and defeat the noodle syndicate. He overshadows her very step of the way, is allowed to do more impressive things compared to her and that's where the issue lies. in my opinion anyways.
The comic is as far as i know, is Sunny's best because it focuses on her, she's the main character and we as the audience get to see what she does. Parappa does not get in the way of her this time. he gets less lines for a change.
Theres no shame in liking her, you can make her interesting but to say the games flesh her out would be disingenuous. She IS restricted to the love interest role which by in large is where the misogyny lies. Women characters are frequently restricted as love interests compared to men. Parappa the rapper as a game is no exception.
and I'm only focusing on the games not the Parappa anime or Pj berri anime. Ill need to rewatch so i can properly comment on it lol.
