I’m certain that the 107th being captured wasn’t the first tragedy Steve heard about in the war, probably not even the first group he’d heard about being captured. If the 107th hadn’t had Bucky in it, I think he would have definitely wanted to help, even asked Phillips about it, because Steve is a good man, of course. But Phillips would have told him just the same, he wasn’t enough, he was a chorus girl, a dancing monkey. And Steve would have believed him. After all, what was he supposed to do, take on an entire Hydra factory by himself? He was just one man, even if he was strong. He’d get himself killed for nothing and never see Bucky again. Because at this point Steve wouldn’t have had the opportunity to test himself at all. He didn’t know what he was capable of. If the 107th was any other unit, Steve would have allowed Phillips to cow him, because it would be easy for him to believe. Steve was obviously not brimming with self confidence at this point, of course, a lifetime of being told he was not enough doesn’t go away just because he got all jacked in the hotness microwave. It was crazy, to think he could do anything. But the thing is, of course, that Steve is crazy for Bucky. Absolutely fucking bonkers. Did he think he was really going to go in there and save Bucky and not just die horribly? Of course not, he was probably 99% sure that he was gonna get his insides turned into outsides. But that 1% was more than enough. It didn’t matter how crazy, it was Bucky, there was no other choice. Because Steve is absolutely out of his mind for Bucky. He’d fight all of Germany for Bucky, win the war on his own, punch God himself right in the face for Bucky. It didn’t even matter that he was a superman now, if skinny Steve was somehow over in Germany and he heard about Bucky he’d have done the exact same thing, guaranteed, because he’s insane.

The day the Howlies realize this is probably very sobering. They were saved because mere chance put in their unit the one guy who had someone out there who loved him enough to storm a Hydra factory by himself, and the ability and sheer willpower to actually succeed.

Is it bad that I sorta want Hydra cap? Obviously not cap willingly being apart of it but maybe similar in a way that Clint was brainwashed?

If what marvel was doing was akin to Clint being brainwashed, with a scene where Steve was forcibly mentally overwhelmed via comic book science it would be a different matter, but that’s not what marvel’s doing. What they are doing is monstrous, they are blatantly using Nazi imagery, influences from Nazi propaganda and a complete disregard for everything Cap is meant to be to create a narrative where fascism is the new exciting thing and our hero is and has always been our oppressor. This isn’t darkfic published under heavy warnings on AO3 intended as an exploration of character and morality under stress, Hydra Cap is intended as a deeply shocking and deliberate corruption of a character with incredible meaning to the oppressed, to be sold as the official byline of an influential company. More than that, Marvel is saying one of their historically most moral and justice loving characters is and has always been a Nazi. They have removed a powerful symbol of allyship and told us he was never with us foolish oppressed people anyways. They have made a character steeped in Jewish culture into a Nazi. They have explicitly shown Hydra Cap as “righteous” holding Mjolnir, thats literally saying Nazism is just and explicitly glorifying it. Its telling any white supremacist and racist and Nazi that they are righteous. That is incredibly, monumentally disgusting and inexcusable.

The fact that they have also made Magneto, a holocaust survivor into a Hydra operative is evil. It’s part of an effort to move Hyrda away from it’s alignment to Nazism, which honestly just makes Nazi ideology even more appealing to white supremacists. While they try and distance Hydra from Nazis, they also have really doubled down on their use of Nazi imagery, ideology and rhetoric in Secret Empire. I mean they have Inhumans being put in camps and operatives hail-ing all over the place for fucks sake, marvel it’s not subtle. By attempting to remove the association with Nazis, Marvel is making the ideals of Nazism something exciting, entertaining and appealing to a larger audience. It’s much easier to be a Nazi when you don’t consider yourself one and Captain America is backing you up.

If marvel was presenting Steve as having been brainwashed and his unwilling support of Nazism as a horrifying thing, I still wouldn’t be thrilled, but i wouldn’t be angry and afraid the way Hydra Cap makes me. Marvel is empowering real life Nazis through this storyline, and I can’t think of anything more incredibly monstrous and sinister.

Don’t support it. Ignoring Secret Emipre’s connection to the rise of fascism in the real world is reckless and ignorant at best.

@marvelentertainment and @nickspencerly have ignored the Jewish roots of the characters they are dealing with with cries of “it’s just fiction, don’t take it so seriously” and “good you’re angry, that means I am successful”. (i am paraphrasing here, their irl replies are much nastier) while either ignoring or revelling in the strong negative effect their explicit support of fascism has.

So Hyrda Cap in fic, before it was canon, with Steve as an unwilling participant is a whole different beast than the canon, loaded with Nazi rhetoric Hydra Cap. I’m not sure it can anymore be considered just to give any support to any form of Hydra Cap, even in fic, even in your scenario.

Real life Nazis use Hydra symbols and Hydra cap as images to justify their cause! It’s terrifying and marvel doesn’t seem care at all about the effect they are having on real life facism! I’m an art historian i KNOW how powerful images are and this is fucking terrifying especially since the creators are denying the power of their images!

How the Winter Soldier shot Nick Fury

I’ve been wanting to make a post about this for a while, even though I might be the only person invested in this, but anyway, here we go. I’ve seen mentioned several times, in posts about the movie and in fics that the Winter Soldier shot Nick Fury through the window of Steve’s apartment, and every time it makes me groan in frustration because no.

The Winter Soldier didn’t shoot Fury through a window, he shot him through a wall, and I don’t know about you, but it seems like a pretty big difference to me.

When I saw the scene the first time, I remember thinking holy shit??? that’s crazy, and for me that’s when the Winter Soldier really became a real, terrifyingly good assassin, that’s when his image as a serious threat solidified.

Ok, my interpretation of this scene was pretty close to yours.

1. Steve moves to the corner and spots Fury, who is sitting in the chair

2. Steve moves away from the corner; Winter Soldier can now see him through that one window

(Side note: Steve’s apartment has a lot of windows)

3. Fury stands up; the Winter Soldier watches Steve’s eyes go from looking slightly down to looking at something eye level

4. The Winter Soldier quickly moves so that he’s in line with Steve’s line of sight; he doesn’t know exactly where Fury is, but he knows he’s somewhere on that line

The Winter Soldier shoots along said line, hitting Fury, then runs back to his initial position to see how Steve reacts and possibly confirm the kill. Then Steve spots him through the window.

Based on this, Bucky must have really good spatial reasoning and very precise estimation of distances and angles. Also he can possibly do trig in his head.

I LOVE YOU. GUYS, LOOK. SOMEONE DREW A EXPLICATIVE CHART THINGIE AND IT IS AWESOME. I hadn’t considered the Soldier moving before making his shot, but there’s no way to know, given that we only see him when Steve does, so it’s possible. I also really like the idea of the Soldier being able to do trig in his head and having really good spatial reasoning and very precise estimation of distances and angles, because I like everything that means he is very very good at being an assassin.

Why Bucky Barnes is the best Sniper Ever to Ever

My coworker is gun obsessed and she was telling me about snipers and how exceedingly rare it is for someone to be a successful sniper. Of course my mind immediately applied these random tid bits to Bucky Barnes.

As most of you may have already known there’s this thing called the coriolis effect. Basically, a long distance target, even if completely still, is technically a ‘moving target’ because the earth is rotating while the bullet is maintaining a relatively straight path. Thus, when shooting over 1000 yards (.56 miles) this needs to be factored in. (I’m not even going to go into spin drift: the rotating motion of the barrel of the gun).

Out to 1000 yards you could have nearly a full minute of correction because of coriolis effect depending on which direction you are shooting. Ie if you are shooting East your target is going to be dropping. If you are shooting towards the West your target is going to rotate up.

So, now-a-days we have automatic calculators for figuring out the coriolis effect quickly and accurately. Long distance shooters use daily updated data to build a drop chart or ballistic compensations. But, back when Bucky was a sniper they still used the mathematical formula for the coriolis effect to position their shots accurately. Bucky would have needed to know the relative motion of the object, the motion of the earth, and the latitude he was shooting from (as well as wind speeds etc) and then he would have had to compensate each shot almost to the tee in order to hit his targets.

Here’s the vector formula for the impact of the coriolis effect:

Bucky had to calculate this every time he positioned himself from his sniping position. In our fictitious MCU there is probably a tiny notebook floating around with Bucky’s scribbled equations.

If this doesn’t prove Bucky’s a fucking brainiac I don’t know what does.
