So I don’t really know how to do this or if anyone will respond, but I figure I might as well try.
@rebeccasugar Hello! I’m a huge fan of Steven Universe, and though you probably won’t read this, I still want to get this out here. I would normally blush to even think about sending this to someone like you, but the free expression thing that you did for Cartoon Network inspired me to put this out. I have created two fan gems that I’m really proud of and could see working in Steven Universe, though I doubt you would ever consider adding a fan gem because of the clamor of the fans trying to get their gem in as well, and you probably have the future seasons completely thought out. However, I’d be ecstatic just to learn that you have read this. I apologize if the description of the gems is a bit all over the place; my thoughts tend to be a bit scattered and it is easier for me to express my thoughts or stories with my speech than writing them down. I also apologize in advance for the long read.
The first gem I came up with is Emerald. The type of gem would be a class of entertainers who sing, dance, or act. It would be extremely rare for an Emerald to have talent in all three, so they are massed produced to get enough of each. Because of them not being made to be anywhere near a battle or those who go into them, the diamonds would have “locked” some of the things most gems can do, giving Emeralds few powers other than changing how they look and sound. Most of the Emeralds are happy-go-lucky types who are boastful about their abilities and can learn songs, choreography, etc. very quickly. However, this Emerald is shy, unconfident, and easily embarrassed. Despite this, she is very skilled in all three aforementioned performing arts. She needs more time to practice these things in order to perfect it, but when she does she can outperform nearly anyone. However, due to her not producing results very quickly and her lack of confidence, the trainers of Emeralds never valued her nor made much effort to train her and led to her moving from Emerald trainer to Emerald trainer. She became very depressed because for this lack of respect and companionship. Her hair grows very long to hide herself and she can sometimes summon a cloak to hide herself even more. If anyone treats her with kindness, she can become very clingy.
The second one is Aquamarine. She was originally intended to be an Emerald, but those who planted her gem in the ground to grow forgot about her and allowed the ground around her to gain more minerals than there should have been, making her a more powerful gem without the restrictions on Emeralds. She was too powerful and freethinking for the diamonds, and they therefore decided to never create another. This made her an aristocrat high in the courts of the diamonds, but behind her back the other gems spoke of how she doesn’t belong and how she is a mistake. Because of her high status, she was also prevented from dancing along with Emeralds, despite her great want to do so. These things made her dislike gem society greatly and wish to escape to a place where gems would truly care about her. This made her rebel against the courts of the diamonds by first visiting places she was banned from such as theaters and later joining Rose Quartz. She believes in the good of everyone and trusts those who she likes to a fault. She tries to get along with everyone even if she doesn’t like parts of their personality or if they don’t like her. However, she can also be possessive of those that she really likes, in an almost “yandere” way.
As Aquamarine started sneaking into the theaters, she eventually saw Emerald backstage, being reprimanded by her trainer. Emerald was silently taking the abuse, but when the trainer told Emerald she needs to act more evil in her roles in acting “stupid organic life forms” she quietly says something along the lines of, “Are they really that bad?” This makes the trainer angry, but it reminds Aquamarine of her own views and interests her, so she starts to follow around Emerald. She sees her sneak off to practice dancing, singing, and acting. She sees her abilities at her fullest (because Emerald doesn’t realize she’s being watched and therefore isn’t embarrassed to perform) and starts to fall in love.
The other Emeralds in Emerald’s group dislike her, and eventually they try to get her kicked out of the theater by making her not show up to a big performance that she has a major role in. They do this by convincing her that she has already missed her cue and that the manager decided to get rid of her. When told of this, she runs away, distraught that another place is abandoning her and that none of these gems care about her. While running away, she starts accidentally creating holograms of others acting mean towards her and fins she can’t make them go away. She comes across a bridge, and in her state of depression ponders whether she could shatter her gem at this height. As Emerald grabs the railing of the bridge, Aquamarine rushes up to Emerald and prevents her from shattering herself by treating her kindly and listening to her troubles. When Emerald describes what had happened, Aquamarine tells her that she has not missed her cue and that she loves her dancing. She then asks Emerald to meet with her when she can so that they talk and so that Emerald can teach her how to dance. Emerald agrees, happy that another gem was finally treating her like her own gem; not just a toy.
As the two gems start meeting up, they shared stories about their lives and found how similarly they were ostracized for being different. Aquamarine tells Emerald about rumors she has heard about a resistance to the diamonds and how she wishes to help. She also speaks about how supposedly in this resistance two different gems exist as a fusion and how she longed to try fusion but could never before as she was one of a kind. Emerald then tells how she can’t fuse because the gems who created Emeralds had prevented them from being able to fuse so they couldn’t accidentally fuse while performing. Aquamarine then decides to find a way to undo this; in the meantime teaching each other a dance that they promise they will do when Emerald can fuse. Eventually, Aquamarine finds a way to get Emerald away from her abusive theater and also finds some gems working for the Resistance on Earth; managing to join them. She makes sure that few people other than the highest leaders know that Emerald is working for them (per Emerald’s request) so that the Homeworld gems don’t start punishing innocent Emeralds.
Aquamarine’s great strengths and personality won over most of the people fighting in the resistance and she soon became one of the most important leaders. She gained many friends in the resistance, as well as many more enemies. Because she was originally high up in the court of the diamonds, she was targeted more than most of those in the resistance. Most of the time, she worked to complete missions sabotaging the diamonds’ attempts to take over the earth. Whenever she had time, she searched everywhere for a way to make Emerald able to fuse.
Aquamarine’s main power is complete hydro kinesis. She can control every form of water completely (gas, liquid, and solid) and change its form at will without even needing to raise her hand. She is graceful in combat; able to use hydro kinesis while dual wielding the knives she summons as her weapon. She can create portal-like things with her gem where a knife will shoot out when she touches it again. Emerald never had powers before Aquamarine helped her, but she eventually got bardic powers when she danced or sang for someone, being able to strengthen them, remove fatigue, etc. She has difficulty pulling out her weapon, a staff, but can use it very effectively. She fights as if dancing and rarely gets hit. She eventually discovers she can control the air; using it to push things back, speed herself up, hold things in place, sending radio waves/using the wailing stones, and eventually to push herself in something similar to flight. She can produce holograms similar to Pearl’s, but can lose control of what is being shown when in emotional stress or something similar. Her gem wasn’t created for these high energy things, however, and she can pass out if her energy depletion is higher than how much energy her gem can generate. Unlike other gems, however, her body can break down food to turn into extra energy.
Eventually Aquamarine discovered how to make Emerald able to fuse. Before she could get back to Emerald, however, she got betrayed multiple times from different gems who had been in the Resistance. This led to her capture and she was scheduled to be shattered publicly. When Emerald finds out, she hurried to where the shattering would take place, wearing a cloak in order to hide herself. As Aquamarine was being restrained so that she can be shattered, she notices Emerald. Right before being shattered, Aquamarine unlocks Emerald’s ability to fuse by saying “My dancer, I give you permission.” Instead of being shattered into many little pieces, Aquamarine was cleaved in half, meaning that she could not reform or use any of her powers but retained her memories and the ability to move her gem halves slightly (most of the time just vibrating in a direction.) Before the gems in charge of shattering Aquamarine could break her down further, Emerald launched herself forward through her wind powers and grabbed one of the halves. The diamond present during Aquamarine’s shattering thought that this mysterious gem posed a great threat, but would likely ignore the other gems in order to get the other half. Instead of further shattering the half still with them, they cast it down to earth to hopefully occupy this gem with searching for it.
Emerald would down to Earth to search for the other half of Aquamarine because Aquamarine was one of the only reasons she still lived. She searched by using her half of Aquamarine’s movements to guide her. She traveled all over Earth, scouring every inch of the planet’s surface in order to find the half. During her travels, she encountered many humans, many of whom tried to attack her because they were suspicious of a “girl” wandering around all alone. Because of this, Emerald started making herself look more like a man (and have clothes commonly worn in the area) by poofing and reforming. Whenever she did this, she was careful to be in some place where humans wouldn’t see her nor find her or Aquamarine’s gem. She also decided to start asking humans whether they had seen a large blue gem anywhere, but because of her shyness had a hard time. She decided to approach girls, as they looked more like gems, which she was more used to talking to. Unfortunately, she found that a lot of the girls wouldn’t talk to her unless she started acting flirty. This meant that she started acting as a Casanova type in order to get any information from people (but if shut down or ignored she quickly became sheepish and embarrassed). She ended up searching for the other half of Aquamarine for over 5000 years, before meeting Steven and the other Crystal Gems.
I have many ideas for episodes that could happen with these two gems in them, but I don’t want to make this post too long.
